ORLANDO, Fla. Rob Gronkowski Women Jersey . -- Aaron Murray wanted nothing more this week than to send Georgias senior class out with a game to remember. The junior quarterback provided a record-setting performance to make it a reality. Murray threw five touchdown passes to set a Georgia bowl record, including two in the fourth quarter, as the sixth-ranked Bulldogs beat No. 23 Nebraska 45-31 in the Capital One Bowl on Tuesday. Murray shook off a pair of first-half interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, and passed for 427 yards -- also a Bulldogs bowl record -- against the nations top-ranked passing defence. He was the games most valuable player on the way to earning his first bowl victory at Georgia. Georgia (12-2) also reached 12 wins for the third time in school history. "I dont know what its like to head into an off-season with a win," Murray said. "Its a great feeling to get a win. Its great for the seniors, who have meant so much to this team. Theyve done a great job of leading this team the whole season. "To get 12 wins...Thats something special." Nebraska (10-4) lost its third consecutive bowl game, and finished the season with two straight woeful defensive performances. The Cornhuskers lost the Big Ten championship game 70-31. The Cornhuskers led 24-23 at the half, but committed two of their three turnovers in the final 30 minutes. Taylor Martinez had two interceptions and two touchdown passes for Nebraska and Rex Burkhead rushed 140 yards in his final college game. But Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said the efficiency of Murray and Georgia on third down (finished 12 for 17) was too much to overcome. "I thought the plan was good," Pelini said of his teams defensive scheme. "Third down hurt us, obviously. When were in position, it was man on man down the field. We needed to make some of those plays and we didnt. And, you know, again, that cost us a football game." Nebraska drops to 12-7 against SEC opponents in bowl games. Trailed by questions about his teams focus following its narrow loss to Alabama in the SEC championship game, Georgia coach Mark Richt said Tuesday was also about a team that finished 5 yards shy of a BCS title game-berth finding closure. "We wanted to win this game to prove to ourselves that we are one of the better teams in the country," Richt said. "I think our guys did a good job of sucking it up when they were tired...But when you make a big play here and there, it gives you a little more energy as well...We made enough big plays at the right moment." Nebraskas offence finished with 443 total yards, but the Bulldogs defence was stingy when it needed to be. They sacked Martinez five times, with junior All-American linebacker Jarvis Jones notching two. Damian Swann had both Georgia interceptions. With his two sacks Jones set a single-season record for with 14.5 sacks for the season. He will now decide in the coming days whether or not to enter the NFL draft. "I think our coaches did a great job of halftime adjustments and got us out there adjusting to what they were calling and got us players honed in," Jones said. "Like coach Richt says, its a 60-minute game and youve got to fight all 60 minutes." Murray found Keith Marshall free near the sideline for a 24-yard touchdown pass that gave Georgia a 38-31 lead with 14:52 to play in the game. Following a Nebraska punt, Murray then hit Chris Conley for a short pass in space over the middle. Conley outran the Cornhuskers defenders for an 87-yard score. That play came after a 49-yard touchdown catch by Conley that helped Georgia tie the game in the third quarter. Nebraska clung to a 24-23 lead at the half, taking back the advantage late in the second quarter via a 16-yard strike from Martinez to Burkhead. After a pair of early turnovers, Murray seemed to be getting Georgias offence back on track, as the Bulldogs punctuated a four-play, 38-yard drive with a 24-yard touchdown run by Todd Gurley to make it 23-17. Both Bulldogs turnovers came via Murray interceptions as the nations top-ranked passing defence crowded Georgias receivers and disguised their coverage schemes. Gurley helped open things up, though, rushing for 81 yards in the opening 30 minutes. Nebraska also allowed Georgias defence three sacks, which thwarted some promising Cornhuskers drives. "Their guys just made plays on stuff," Nebraska senior linebacker Will Compton said. "Our guys were there but, yeah, I mean they made more plays than we did at the end of the day." Nebraskas defence didnt need long to force the games first turnover, picking off a Murray pass on Georgias opening drive of the game. The Cornhuskers went three-and-out on their first offensive touch, and were forced to punt. But that attempt by punter Brett Maher was blocked by the Bulldogs Shawn Williams. There was a scramble for the ball in the end zone, but it trickled out of the back for a safety. The Bulldogs then went up 9-0 their ensuing possession following the free kick, capping an 80-yard drive with a 29-yard touchdown pass by Murray to Arthur Lynch. Nebraskas offence finally got going on its next touch, responding with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Martinez to Jamal Turner. The Cornhuskers defence then made with 14-9 when Compton came up with their second interception in the half on Murray and returned it 24 yards for the score. "Im real proud of Aaron and job he did," Richt said. "(He) had a couple of things go not exactly the way he wanted them to go. Had a couple of picks early. Just hung in there, very resilient and finished." Nate Solder Jersey Elite . LONG POND, Pa. -- In a race marred by the death of a fan hit by lightning, Jeff Gordon earned his first victory of the season on Sunday, taking advantage of an accident sparked by teammate Jimmie Johnson and going on to win when the race was called because of a downpour preceding the fatal storm. After the race, Pocono officials said one person died and nine others were injured after a lightning strike in the parking lot behind the grandstand. "You hate to hear something like that," Gordon said. "Certainly our thoughts are with them." Monroe County Coroner Bob Allen would only identify the victim as a 41-year-old Pennsylvania man. The victim was in or near his car in a parking lot after the race had ended when lightning struck the car, Allen said. Gordon earned his 86th career victory, winning for the first time since September 2011 at Atlanta Motor Speedway to thrust himself into wild-card contention in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. This win meant more than about all the others for Gordon. This was the first time his wife and both of his two young children joined him celebration. "That experience to me today means so much more than anything else," he said. Johnson inadvertently gave his Hendrick Motorsports teammate the help he needed. Johnsons No. 48 had a flat tire off a restart and slammed Matt Kenseth into the wall. Kenseth slid down the track and took out Denny Hamlin and three other cars. With an unexpected opening triggered by the accident, Gordon zagged and zipped the No. 24 through holes like an All-Pro running back, splashing his way to victory. "When I saw the opening to get inside, I was taking it," Gordon said. It couldnt have come at a better time. The skies opened and cars were ordered off the track. The race was called moments later with 98 of the 160 scheduled laps completed. Gordon, who started 27th, had a drive to remember. Gordon, who turned 41 on Saturday, had a string of bad breaks this season and knew he needed wins over the final six races before the Chase cutoff to have any shot at running for a fifth championship during the 10-race playoffs. The win moved him into the second wild-card spot that would guarantee a berth in the field. Gordon, who also won a rain-shortened race at Pocono in 2007, passed Bill Elliott for most career wins at Pocono with six. Gordon had winless seasons in 2008 and 2010 -- a late-career drought far removed from the years when he was a regular in Victory Lane. He had double-digit victories in three straight seasons (1996-98) and seemed aa lock to hit 100 victories by 35 and put himself behind only Richard Petty on the all-time list. Michael Jenkins Jersey. Petty leads with 200 wins and David Pearson is second with 105. Gordon is a comfortable third on the list. He had a painfully mediocre start to season -- including consecutive 33rd and 35th place finishes at Talladega and Darlington -- before finding his groove of late with crew chief Alan Gustafson. Gordon has three straight top-six finishes and has finished in the top six in six of his last seven races. He was due for a breakthrough and kept grinding it out. "The last several weeks, weve had something to build on," Gordon said. Kasey Kahne was second, followed by Martin Truex Jr., Brad Keselowski and Tony Stewart. Kahne refused to rule out another Gordon championship run if he stays in the Chase field. "Absolutely. Its Jeff Gordon. Look what hes done," Kahne said. With the storms coming -- spotters told their drivers the heavy rain was coming -- Johnson was in prime position to follow last weeks win in Indy with another trip to Victory Lane. Johnson had a flat, though, and he made contact with Kenseth. Johnson dropped back but suffered no real damage. Kenseth touched the wall and slid down the track. Hamlin had nowhere to go except right into the side of the No. 17. Hamlin was taken to the infield care centre and complained of discomfort around his abdomen but was released. Gordon, who was sixth in the restart necessitated by Kurt Buschs wreck, took off and took the lead. "I know that you dont want to win them quite like this, but weve earned it because of all the things that weve done this year," Gordon said. Johnson blamed a right rear flat tire for sparking the accidents. "I shouldnt feel bad about that, but not much you can do with a right-rear flat," he said. Then the downpour came. The scheduled 400-mile race had already been postponed about two hours because of rain. "For all the things that have gone wrong for us this year, I still cant believe what just happened," Gordon said. "But, I think this is the one that makes up for all the ones that have gotten away. Im just so proud of this team." While Kahne and Gordon had a great race for Hendrick, Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. had one to forget. Earnhardt was lucky to maintain his overall points lead after he was forced to the garage on lap 51 because of a busted transmission. He later returned to the track and finished 32nd. It almost didnt matter. Rain or shine, the race belonged to Gordon. ' ' '
