Phelps has so far kept his Olympic cards close to his chest, keeping much of his London 2012 plans a secret. If he chooses, the American swimmer will also be able to scratch from any race he chooses once the trials get under way. If he qualifies in every race, however, he could -- with the addition of three team relay opportunities -- compete in 10 races in London. At 26, Phelps is just three medals away from becoming the most decorated Olympian of all time. Should Phelps qualify for the 400m IM, he could be setting up one of the most heated contests of London 2012. The mens race is scheduled to be the first swimming event of the Games, and it is one that American rival Ryan Lochte swims very well. And next weeks trials -- which on Monday will also kick off with the mens 400m IM -- should show a preview of the match-up. Phelps famously posted seven world-record times on his way to an unprecedented eight Olympic gold medals in 2008. His total Olympic tally -- adding in those he earned at Athens 2004 -- is up to 16, to date. Phelps current collection is second only to Larisa Latynina, a Soviet gymnast who won 18 Olympic medals during her 12-year career.
