PHILADELPHIA -- Dan Uggla got the big hit that can bust a slump. . Uggla hit a tiebreaking three-run double in the seventh after Tim Hudson blew a five-run lead and the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 12-6 Wednesday night. Ryan Howards three-run homer off Hudson during a five-run fifth tied it at 6, but the wild card-leading Braves scored four runs after Antonio Bastardo (2-4) got the first two outs in the seventh. Michael Bourn had three hits, including a two-run homer, and drove in three, and Uggla also had three hits. "Its been just a constant grind for me," said Uggla, who entered the game hitting .136 (23 for 169) since June 6. "Ive been struggling way too long and my teammates have picked me up." Chad Durbin (4-1) tossed a perfect sixth to earn the win. Hudson allowed six runs and six hits in 4 1-3 innings. It was his second-shortest outing of the season. "In the fifth, I dont think I made a good pitch the whole inning," Hudson said. "I was spotting everything the first four innings. I felt good. I thought I would be going seven or eight." The Braves chased Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick in the fourth, taking a 6-1 lead that seemed insurmountable with Hudson on the mound. The three-time All-Star righty is 132-3 when given a lead of three or more. But Jimmy Rollins got a rally started in the fifth with an RBI double. Domonic Brown followed with an RBI double to cut it to 6-3. After Chase Utley was hit by a pitch, Howard took Hudson deep to left-centre to tie it at 6. The comeback took Kendrick off the hook. He gave up six runs and seven hits in 3 1-3 innings. Jason Heywards two-out double in the seventh started Atlantas rally. Chipper Jones was intentionally walked and Freddie Freeman worked a walk. Uggla then ripped one down the third-base line to clear the bases and knock out Bastardo. Uggla, the NL starting All-Star second baseman, has 11 hits and 11 RBIs in the last 10 games. None were bigger than this hit. "It was definitely a confidence booster," he said. "Any time you come through like that, it lets you relax a little." The Braves added another run in the inning off Josh Lindblom and two more in the eighth. Rollins hit his 40th career leadoff homer, but the Braves answered with four runs in the second. Freeman walked and Uggla singled with one out. Both advanced on a wild pitch that proved costly because David Ross followed with a grounder to shortstop that couldve been an inning-ending double play. Instead, Freeman scored on the out. After Paul Janish walked, Hudson hit a drive over centre fielder John Mayberry Jr.s head to knock in a pair. Kendrick then walked Bourn and Martin Prado singled to right. Hudson was safe at the plate when catcher Erik Kratz dropped the throw by Nate Schierholtz. Bourn connected in the fourth to extend Atlantas lead to 6-1. The two-time Gold Glove winner also ran down a couple balls in centre field and robbed Erik Kratz of extra bases and a go-ahead RBI in the fifth. "Unless you see him play centre field every day, you cant appreciate him," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. The last-place Phillies lost their first series since trading Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence on July 31. The five-time defending NL East champions fell to 50-61. They lost just 60 games last year. "Thats the inconsistency," manager Charlie Manuel said. "Bullpen had been doing real good. We came back, but still couldnt hold them." Notes: Rollins is fifth on the all-time list for leadoff homers, four behind Brady Anderson for fourth place. ... Howard is 20 for 61 with seven homers and 17 RBIs. ... The Phillies had a 1.45 bullpen ERA since July 20 before allowing five earned runs to the Braves. ... The Phillies are 3-9 vs. the Braves this season. ... Atlantas bullpen has a major league-best 1.59 ERA since July 3. ... The Braves are 41-13 in games in which Bourn has a hit and scores. ... Both teams are off Thursday. Paul Maholm (9-7, 3.75) takes the mound when the Braves visit the New York Mets on Friday night. ... Roy Halladay (5-6, 4.02) pitches against St. Louis in a rematch of Game 5 of the 2011 NLDS that he lost 1-0 to Chris Carpenter. In a tradition that dates back to 1949 when the Stamps captured a 20-6 win over Edmonton, this is the most heavily played matchup during rivalry week, with the Eskimos delivering 29 wins in 51 games over the years. . Zambia, which beat top-ranked African team Ivory Coast in Februarys African Cup final, conceded second-half goals to Mohamed Tahir and Saif Masawi in Khartoum to slip to the bottom of Group D alongside Lesotho at the start of Africas main qualifying competition. Rios was trying to break up a double play and when he went into Detroit second baseman Omar Infante, it caused an errant throw that allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score Monday as the White Sox beat the Tigers 5-4 and went up three games in division. Nadal broke the Slovak twice in a first set that lasted 50 minutes, before finally overpowering Lacko to take the second in just over half an hour and wrap up the match. "In the second set I think I did everything better," said Nadal, who defeated top-ranked Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros on Monday for his 11th Gram Slam title. . Citys unbeaten league start looked under threat when Steven Caulker headed Tottenham in front, but goals from Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko clinched a 2-1 win. As the champions fell two points behind United, Chelsea dropped a point further back in third after being held to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- There was nobody White Sox manager Robin Ventura would rather have had at the plate with runners on the corners in the 14th inning than his gritty new third baseman. Kevin Youkilis hit a sacrifice fly on the 14th pitch of his marathon at-bat, scoring Gordon Beckham and giving Chicago a 9-8 victory over the Kansas City Royals in a game that stretched into the wee hours of Saturday morning. "At some point you figure hes battling enough that hes going to be able to win that," Ventura said of Youkilis, who arrived in a trade with the Red Sox late last month. "Hes the guy you want to have up there in that situation." Youkilis earned the praise, but it was Beckham who got the winning rally going. He drew a one-out walk off Everett Teaford (1-3), and Alejandro De Aza sent a single down the third-base line to put runners on the corners for Youkilis, who muscled a fly ball deep to centre for what turned out to be his fifth game-winning hit in 14 games with the White Sox. "We just kept battling back, and it was a pretty unbelievable game," Beckham said. "There were so many times I could see that game being over, but it just kept going." Dylan Axelrod (1-2) worked around trouble in the 13th for Chicago, and then retired the side in the 14th to end a game that lasted 5 hours, 23 minutes. Both teams had chances to end it much earlier. Royals closer Jonathan Broxton blew a save in the ninth inning and White Sox closer Addison Reed did the same in the 12th. "The offence did a great job of battling back. We had a couple of situations to put it away, but didnt," Royals manager Ned Yost said. Both teams burned through nine pitchers, setting a franchise record for the Royals. Teaford was scheduled to start Tuesday night before being pressed into relief duty. The game also came close to ending in the 13th inning, when Chicagos Dayan Viciedo earned a walk from Tim Collins, and Beckham doubled to score pinch-runner Jordan Danks from second base. Jeff Francoeur answered with a double of his own leading off the bottom of the inning, and after Brayan Pena grounded out, Lorenzo p;Cain singled to put runners on the corners. Of course, that was a microcosm of the entire back-and-forth affair. Adam Dunn and Alex Rios homered to give Chicago a 3-0 lead in the first inning, Mike Moustakas homered to help the Royals score three times in the second, and Kansas City added two more runs in the fourth -- one coming on a homer by Francoeur down the third-base line. The White Sox charged back in the fifth. Dunn and A.J. Pierzynski singled off Royals starter Bruce Chen, and Viciedo connected for a three-run homer and a 6-5 lead. The Royals were down to their final out in the eighth inning when Cain doubled and Gordon walked. Alcides Escobar came through with a clutch two-run triple. Broxton, who seems to make every outing an adventure, gave up a single to Youkilis to start the ninth. Dunn and Paul Konerko walked to load the bases with no outs, and after Rios flied out to centre, Pierzynski sent an RBI single to right field. Francoeur came up throwing as pinch-runner Orlando Hudson tried to score. The throw was well up the first-base line, but it arrived in plenty of time for catcher Salvador Perez to lunge back across home and make the tag -- even though replays showed that Hudson may have been safe. Ventura argued to no avail with plate umpire Chris Guccione. The Royals put a runner aboard with one out in the 10th and couldnt get him home, and loaded the bases with one out in the 11th before Yuniesky Betancourt popped out and Moustakas grounded out to shortstop to keep the game going well into the night. "It was crazy. You go back and forth, one team goes ahead, the other team goes ahead," Ventura said. "You dont necessarily expect that, but it happens." NOTES: The White Sox recalled RHP Jhan Marinez from Triple-A Charlotte. He took the roster spot of RHP Deunte Heath, who was optioned to Charlotte last Sunday. Marinez was among the players obtained from the Marlins for manager Ozzie Guillen. ... RHP Luke Hochevar starts Saturday for the Royals against Chicago RHP Jake Peavy. ' ' '
