Reasons to Believe 1. . Open The Gates – Before there was Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham, there was Antonio Gates. It wasnt long ago Gates was the most dangerous tight end in the league, but injuries have sapped his effectiveness the past couple of seasons. Reports have Gates entering the year healthier than hes been in a long time, and ready to retake his place among the elite tight ends in the league. 2. Infusion of New Blood – The Chargers added a number of talented pieces through free agency on both offence and defence. These players, guys like LeRon McClain, Jarret Johnson, and Atari Bigby come with the added benefit of not having been through the past disappointments in San Diego; a clean slate. 3. Rivers And His Receivers – Philip Rivers lost his leading receiver Vincent Jackson through free agency and hes still thrilled with his pass catchers heading into the season. Reports suggest Rivers has built a strong chemistry with his receiving corps, especially newcomers Robert Meacham and Eddie Royal. After a slight down year for Rivers, he could bounce back with this group. Reasons to Doubt 1. More Of The Same – The Chargers fired Marty Schottenheimer in 2007 not because he was an unsuccessful coach, but rather in part because he couldnt get the team "over the hump." Five years later and it appears that answer also eludes Norv Turner. Turner has 14 years head coaching experience and has yet to lead a team to the Super Bowl. 2. Cant Trust Gaither? – Left tackle Jared Gaither was signed off the street only to become the surprise saviour of the Chargers offensive line last year. But the reason the talented Gaither was available at all was because several teams had soured on him and his reputation as a lazy player. San Diego took a chance, signing him long-term, but concerns will persist. Gaither has missed time in training camp with a back injury, surely igniting more concern. 3. Mathews Work Load – A lot of the Chargers plans on offence hinge on Ryan Mathews being a workhorse back. The third-year rusher was slated for a ton of carries, but after breaking his clavicle in the preseason, that number may have to be re-examined. Mathews isnt expected to miss much regular season time, but the injury is still concerning for a player expected to be leaned on so heavily. What to Expect For the past several seasons, the Chargers entered with expectations somewhere in between division favourites to Super Bowl contenders, always to fall short. But thanks in large part to Peyton Manning signing in Denver, the Chargers enter this year flying under the radar. The lack of attention should benefit the Chargers, who have the talent to make the playoffs and even challenge for the division title. Fournier has five goals in his last three outings and 12 goals in total this season while Drouins performance gives him 15 goals and 33 points in 15 games and leaves him second in scoring on Halifax behind forward Nathan MacKinnon. . "Its nice. Different questions," he said contentedly. After a record-setting nine straight losses to start the MLS season, Winter finally had a win to talk about thanks to Danny Koevermans 88th-minute goal against the Philadelphia Union. Olesen, who won his maiden title at the Sicilian Open in April, hit four birdies for a 4-under 68 and was 16 under overall. Karlberg improved to 13 under with a 66 thanks to four birdies on his last six holes. "I didnt hit the ball as well I did the first two days . . Josh Smith scored 10 of his team-high 23 points in the third quarter to lead the Atlanta Hawks to a 95-86 victory over the Hornets on Tuesday night.MANCHESTER, England -- Robin van Persie became the latest big-name player to slip from Arsenals grasp when the Netherlands striker completed his move to Manchester United on a four-year deal on Friday. Van Persie agreed personal terms and passed a medical examination to complete a transfer that is believed to have cost United about 24 million pounds ($38 million). "I am looking forward to following in the footsteps of so many great strikers, bringing my experience and playing my part to help the team compete for the biggest trophies in the game," Van Persie said. "I cant wait to get started." While Arsenal will be happy to have recouped such a big fee for a 29-year-old player who has had many injury problems in his eight years at the club, Van Persies departure nevertheless deprives manager Arsene Wenger of his captain and the leagues top scorer last season with 30 goals. In fact, Van Persie becomes the fifth Arsenal captain to leave the club since 2004, after Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, William Gallas and, in the preseason of 2011, Cesc Fabregas. Van Persies future at Arsenal has looked bleak ever since he issued a statement on his personal website last month saying he disagreed with the direction the club was heading. The London team hasnt won a trophy since 2005, when it beat United on penalties to capture the FA Cup. "Let me make one thing clear, I dont want things to get twisted," Van Persie said. "From my side and Arsenals side now, there are no hard feelings. Its just certain elements are vital for me and we had different views." The Netherlands international also spoke of his excitement at playing alongside players such as Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs. "Of course Id love to play with Wayne," Van Persie said. ""Ive said many times before he is a world-class player all-round. &qquot;Scholes and Giggs are world class and have been proving it for 20 years now. Id like to say we are all in it together to achieve greatness." Manchester City and Juventus initially showed interest in Van Persie, but Ferguson maintained his pursuit of the Dutchman, who could now make his debut against Everton in Uniteds Premier League opener at Goodison Park on Monday. Van Persies departure provides further evidence that Arsenal can no longer compete with the likes of City, United and Chelsea. In the past three years, Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy, Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure have all joined big-spending City, which won the English title last season. Fabregas left to join Barcelona, widely seen as the best team in world football, and now a disillusioned Van Persie has departed. Wenger has already brought in Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski in anticipation of Van Persie being sold, meaning there is no need for the last-minute signings that happened on transfer deadline day last August after the reluctant sales of Nasri and Fabregas. Van Persie will join an attacking unit at Old Trafford that already includes Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez. Dimitar Berbatov is also still at United, but is likely to leave to make way for Van Persie. He is Uniteds third signing of the preseason, after Japan playmaker Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmund and midfielder Nick Powell from English lower-league team Crewe Alexandra. "Robin is a world-class striker with a proven record in England and in European football," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "His talents need no introduction to our fans -- he has scored a number of goals against us in some classic battles with his former club. "His movement, finishing and all-round ability are outstanding." ' ' '
