MILAN, Italy -- Visiting Sampdoria stunned AC Milan 1-0 in its opening Serie A match on Sunday through Andrea Costas headed goal in the 60th minute. . Kevin-Prince Boateng almost rescued a point for Milan in stoppage time but his effort crashed off the right post. Milan midfielder Mathieu Flamini could also have scored in a frantic finale but his effort was cleared off the line by Sampdoria defender Daniele Gastaldello. The result marks a memorable start for promoted Sampdoria and new coach Ciro Ferrara, whereas Milan has until Friday to bring in reinforcements before the transfer window closes. Milan was jeered off the pitch by its fans after the game, while the Sampdoria players stayed behind to soak up the applause from their travelling supporters. The Rossoneri already find themselves on the back foot, after defending champion Juventus beat Parma 2-0 on Saturday and Napoli beat Palermo 3-0. A breathtaking goal from Pablo Osvaldo was not enough to give Roma all three points, as it was held to a 2-2 draw at home by Catania in Zdenek Zemans return to the Roma coaching post after a 13-year absence. It was Milans first game without star strikers Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Antonio Cassano as well as key defender Thiago Silva, who were all sold during the off-season. Club icons Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf, Gennaro Gattuso and Filippo Inzaghi left the club at the end of last season, along with Mark Van Bommel and Gianluca Zambrotta. The San Siro also featured banners berating Cassano, who moved to bitter rival Inter Milan on Wednesday in a swap deal for Giampaolo Pazzini. Milan was also hampered by the absences of captain Massimo Ambrosini, Ignazio Abate, Alexandre Pato, Sulley Muntari and Rodney Strasser through injury. The game almost got off to a perfect start for the visitors when Eder took advantage of a glaring error by Daniele Bonera and raced toward goal. However, Bonera atoned for his mistake and did well to clear the danger and avoid conceding a penalty. Seconds later, Boateng should have scored but failed to control the ball and Sampdoria goalkeeper Sergio Romero was able to gather. Milan struggled to create any meaningful chances and looked dangerously exposed at the back. Robinho had two good chances after the break, but his effort landed on the roof of the net and then Romero did well to save another long-range effort from the Brazilian forward. Pazzini made his debut in the 57th minute, but it was his former club that took the lead moments later. Costa rose highest in the area to powerfully head a corner into the bottom left of the net with goalkeeper Christian Abbiati rooted to the spot. Milans chances of an equalizer dipped when Robinho limped off the pitch and was replaced by Urby Emanuelson. The hosts thought they had levelled five minutes later, but Romero parried Yepes header onto the post from point-blank range and grabbed the ball just as it was about to go over the line. Kevin Constant almost scored with five minutes to go, on his Milan debut, but he fired straight at Romero from close range. In Sicily, Napoli should have taken the lead in the 41st when Christian Maggio headed to Edinson Cavani, who was all alone a few yards out from goal. But the Uruguayans effort crashed off the underside of the crossbar and out of danger. Napoli went in front in first-half stoppage time when Maggio raced down the right flank and cut the ball across to Marek Hamsik, who controlled it well before unleashing a fierce shot into the top right corner. Maggio doubled Napolis lead 10 minutes from time following a long ball from Hamsik, before Cavani headed in a third late on. Inter Milan cruised to a 3-0 win over promoted Pescara thanks to goals from Wesley Sneijder, Diego Milito and Philippe Coutinho. Cassano provided the assist for the second goal on his debut. In the capital city, Giovanni Marcheses goal for Catania should have been ruled out for offside. But Roma was back on level terms when Osvaldo -- who had headed onto the post two minutes into the second half -- scored with a stunning overhead kick that looks certain to be one of the main contenders for goal of the season. Alejandro Gomez restored Catanias lead, but 18-year-old Nicolas Lopez levelled in stoppage time on his debut only moments after coming off the bench. Lucas Castro almost won the game for Catania but he hit the crossbar. Elsewhere, Chievo beat Bologna 2-0 and Genoa won by the same score against Cagliari, while promoted Torino held Siena to a scoreless draw. Hernanes 17th-minute goal was enough to give Lazio a 1-0 win at Atalanta. [url=http://www.cowboysofficialteamstore.com/autographed-emmitt-smith-jersey-dx-... Smith Jersey . Being bounced in the East Division semifinal by Hamilton last fall after winning Grey Cups the previous two seasons prompted general manager Jim Popp to drop some veterans and bring new blood into the defence going into the 2012 campaign. . NEW YORK -- Mets fans cheered the loudest for Chipper Jones once he was out of their ballpark for good. When he took the lineup card to home plate before his last game in Queens, Jones got some scattered applause. When he pinch hit in the ninth, he received cheers in full voice -- along with some boos, of course. Jones walked, and once a pinch runner came in to replace him, the retiring 40-year-old star trotted back toward the Braves dugout on the third base side and Mets fans stood and cheered. Jones took off his batting helmet, raised it to the crowd, and then was gone down the steps. For that, and for his long career as a most worthy adversary, Mets fans stood and applauded. "Cant say enough about the fans in New York this year. Theyve been awfully supportive both in person, out on the field, on Twitter," Jones said. "Im very appreciative to them for that." He and the Braves, of course, couldnt leave town without getting the better of the Mets one last time. Brian McCann homered and drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning to give Atlanta its fifth straight win, 3-2 Sunday for a three-game sweep at Citi Field. "Now that Im scuffling a little bit, its important for someone else to be stepping up," Jones said. Pinch runner Reed Johnson made it to third before Michael Bourn struck out, flinging his bat and helmet in rage after the inning ended. Martin Prado led off the 10th with a single against Bobby Parnell (4-4). After Jason Heyward grounded out, Freddie Freeman was intentionally walked. Dan Uggla worked a walk before McCann hit a sacrifice fly. Peter Moylan pitched the bottom half for his first save of the season. Craig Kimbrel (1-1), Atlantas usual closer, worked a scoreless ninth for the NL wild-card leaders. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said he wanted Kimbrel to face the Mets mid-lineup power threats, Ike Davis and Lucas Duda, in the ninth while it was tied. "Today, it fell where the big boys were coming up," Gonzalez said. "It worked out." Davis led off with a single, but Kimbrel struck out Duda and Kelly Shoppach before Andres Torres grounded out to end the threat. The Mets took the lead on Davis RBI single in the fourth, but Atlanta answered when Bourn singled home Jose Constanza in the fifth. Mets starter Chris Young allowed five hits and four walks iin six innings, striking out seven. [url=http://www.cowboysofficialteamstore.com/autographed-phil-costa-jersey-ny-18... Costa Jersey. . He is 0-4 in seven starts at Citi Field this season. McCann led off the sixth with his 20th home run for a 2-1 lead, but Braves starter Tommy Hanson remained winless in five starts since a victory over Miami on July 30. Hes 0-3 since then and has only made it out of the sixth inning in one of those starts. Hansons day ended when David Wright hit a double into the left-field corner to tie it at 2 in the sixth. It started off with more promise -- Hanson retired the first 10 batters he faced. "I felt really good about this start today," Hanson said. "We came up here and took care of business." In the bottom of the eighth, the Mets threatened to take the lead. But Braves reliever Eric OFlaherty got Wright to ground out on a full count with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and runners on first and third. That set up Jones moment, such that it was. Reliever Frank Francisco walked him on four pitches. "I didnt want to pitch around him, but I didnt want to leave anything right there," Francisco said. "Hes a great player. I was trying to save the game." Jones noticed, too. "I dont think Francisco was going to let me get a real good swing at one," Jones said. As much as he might have liked to have one last good whack at the Mets, Jones was pleased enough with the actual results: Atlanta goes to Milwaukee with a three-game sweep and having won seven of its last eight. And Jones has one more memory of a Mets ballpark. He hit the first two homers of his career at the Mets old stadium, and his eight-year-old son is named for it -- Shea. "It was cool," Jones said of his last at bat in Queens, nearly 20 years after his first one. "I heard a bunch of boos in there, but for once the cheers outnumbered the boos." NOTES: Jones will get another chance to torment the Mets. The Braves host them in a series later this month. ...
