More than 90 per cent of Ontario Hockey League players fight fewer than 10 times per season. That said, the sanctions adopted by the OHL that include suspensions and fines for the serial scrapper are clearly targeting the one-dimensional player. But some might be surprised to learn that 31 OHL players recorded 10 or more fighting majors last season, compared to the 23 National Hockey League players who also dropped the gloves no fewer than 10 times. Fighting has been on the NHLs radar for many years and over time, there have been countless discussions on its merit - or if the league needs to do more to police it. Now the number of fights per season in the NHL is declining, so theres less of an outcry for banning what some believe is an important part of the game. However, the NHL - as well as the Western Hockey League and QMJHL - will pay close attention to the latest OHL changes and may adopt their own initiatives in the near future. Fighting in the NHL seems to be less contentious than diving or other dishonourable acts designed to draw penalties. And when the NHL lockout ends, players who have a tendency to embellish may be in for a surprise. Players, coaches, managers and officials who participated in league meetings in August agreed embellishment has once again become an issue. Vancouver Canucks centre Ryan Kesler has been identified as an offender. While Kesler plays the game hard, he has been known to exaggerate contact to gain an advantage. Chicagos Dan Carcillo has been caught on video on more than one occasion during his career trying to sell a penalty. Among his more noteworthy attempts was in a 2010 playoff game with the Philadelphia Flyers against the New Jersey Devils, where Carcillo pretended to have been struck in the face with a stick. Superstars such as Pittsburghs Evgeni Malkin have also drawn criticism for attempting to mislead referees, as he did in the playoffs last spring resulting in a penalty against Philadelphias Matt Carle. Everything from posting pictures of each culprit in every NHL dressing room to re-instituting a fine system, or simply tacking on an additional two-minute penalty to offset the original call is being discussed by hockey operations and will at some point be presented to all NHL general managers for further discussion. beats by dre uk . Hanrahan left the team to be with his family following the death of his grandmother. He is expected to return to the Pirates on Sunday. Manager Clint Hurdle says hes not sure who would serve as the teams closer in place of Hanrahan. beats by dre . Shoes were lined up methodically along the bottom, jerseys and other clothing hung on a rod, a cap sat on the top shelf and the team helmet hung on its customary hook. Nelson also said that Nugent-Hopkins will decide by next Monday whether or not he will play for Team Canada at the upcoming World Junior Championship. "It is contingent on his health. Its clear from what has transpired in Blue Jays land the past couple of days, the organization sees this as a year of opportunity. Right now theyre holding down the second Wild Card position and they are only two games back of division leading Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles. As much as General Manager Alex Anthopolous tried to downplay the signing of former Expos star Vladimir Guerrero to a Minor League deal, this move is clearly designed to send a message to the team. That message is, we can make it to the playoffs this year! If Guerrero performs as expected in the minors, he can be at least a platoon DH and big bat off the bench late in a game. That could result in diminished playing time for Adam Lind, if he doesnt come around at the plate and if Edwin Encarnacion starts seeing more time at first base. Guerrero is 37 and he cant play the field anymore. It would also probably be better if he was a left hand bat, but he should prove to be a significant addition. Over the last 48 hours, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. has conceded he could be a seller at the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline, if his team doesnt turn things around. Lefty Cole Hamels and centre fielder Shane Victorino are both free agents in the off-season and could conceivably be moved if the Phllies decide to retool. FOX Sports Ken Rosenthal is reporting that Anthopoulos has alreaady been in contact with Amaro about those two players.dddddddddddd. As Rosenthal added, this is often just routine intelligence gathering that doesnt necessarily equal trade talks. Sometimes youre just checking to see if a player is truly on the market. Being interested in Victorino doesnt make a lot of sense for the Jays, unless theyre having second thoughts about Colby Rasmus and his ability to hit. Youd love to get an arm like Hamels. As a west coast guy, there have already been plenty of rumours that he might sign with the Dodgers, who suddenly have all kinds of money to spend. It is going to be very interesting heading up to that trade deadline. Everytime, I wonder if baseball would be better off without the DH, I think back to all the great ones that have played in Toronto for the Blue Jays. Names such as, Rico Carty, Willie Horton, Al Oliver, Cliff Johnson, Dave Winfield, Paul Molitor, and now it would appear Edwin Encarnacion. And yes even Jose Canseco who had his last great full season with the Jays in 1998. Next weeks homestand is huge, with the Rays, the New York Yankees and the surprising New York Mets in town. It should be a strong indicator of how good this Jays team really is.
