When the Formula One circus shows up in Bahrain next weekend, there will be a familiar face in the paddock. . Former world champion Jacques Villeneuve will be on hand to compete in the Speedcar Series, taking part in the final two rounds of the inaugural season. Villeneuve, who lost his NASCAR ride following Daytona, is the latest in a long line of former F1 drivers who are competing in the Asian-backed, NASCAR-style series. Jean Alesi, Johnny Herbert, Stefan Johansson and Ukyo Katayama are also competing. "Were proud to have Jacques join the Speedcar family," said series general manager Benoit Lamonerie. "He will be the first Formula One World Champion and NASCAR driver to sign with us." While Villeneuve knows his name recognition will help the series, he is looking at gaining more experience behind the wheel of NASCAR-type cars as he continues his ultimate pursuit of a full-time ride in the Sprint Cup series. "Speedcar Series looks like a great event and I have heard that it is a lot of fun. Its a series still in its infancy and will build up but I think its a great idea," he says. "On a personal level, Speedcar will give me more road racing experience with this kind of cars which will be useful in future NASCAR road courses events."
