Goaltending great Dominik Hasek once again retired on Tuesday at the age of 47, ending his attempt at returning to the National Hockey League. . Theres no doubt that The Dominator was one of this generations best goaltenders, picking up six Vezina Trophies from 1993 to 2001. In that period of time, he also won consecutive Hart Trophies as the NHLs most valuable player and an Olympic gold medal in 1998. Hasek posted 389 wins with 81 shutouts in the regular season with a 2.20 goals-against-average. In the playoffs, he won 65 games with 14 shutouts and a 2.02 GAA. But was he the best in his generation? Lets take a look at the other candidates. Patrick Roy: In 19 NHL seasons, Roy holds the record for all-time playoff wins by a goaltender with 151. He won four Stanley Cups, two each with Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche, three Vezina Trophies and three Conn Smythe Trophies as MVP of the playoffs. Roy recorded 551 wins with 66 shutouts in the regular season with a 2.54 GAA. In the playoffs, on top of his 151 wins, he picked up 23 shutouts and a 2.30 GAA. Martin Brodeur: The 40-year-old is the only player on this list still active in the NHL, and he leads the league in all-time wins with 656. He won the Calder Trophy in 1993-94 and the Vezina four times. Brodeur was also a member of two gold medal winning teams in the Olympics and has his name engraved on the Stanley Cup three times. To go along with his record 656 regular season wins, Brodeur has 119 shutouts and a 2.23 GAA. Brodeur has been equally effective in the playoffs, posting 113 wins with a 2.02 GAA and 24 shutouts. Ed Belfour: The Eagle played 17 seasons in the league, and picked up the Calder Trophy as the NHLs rookie of the year in 1990-91. He won the Vezina twice, led the Dallas Stars to the Stanley Cup and also took home a gold medal as a member of Canadas 2002 Olympic Hockey team. "Its one of those games that well remember for a long time, because its one of those pivotal moments that shows were a team that doesnt give up, and were a team that doesnt look for excuses," said Whitecaps coach Martin Rennie. Sebastien Le Touxs goal in the 80th minute gave the undermanned Whitecaps the dramatic win. Vancouver held off a Rapids rally and caught a couple of breaks as Colorado players clanked shots off the crossbar and the post in the closing minutes. The Whitecaps (7-3-4) posted their seventh Major League Soccer victory of the season, surpassing the six they mustered in their 2011 expansion season. "It was something that we talked about and we were motivated by going into this game," said Rennie, who is in his first year as Vancouvers coach.
