Its still a few months away before training camp opens, yet there is plenty to talk about in Montreal when it comes to the Canadiens. . While Marc Bergevin has been a very busy person the last few weeks, his work might not be done just yet. Since his appointment as the new General Manager in the first week of May, Bergevin has been busy filling out his management team and coaching staff, while working alongside Trevor Timmins to prepare for the Draft. When it comes to shaping the roster, it would be the July 1 deadline that would offer him the first chance to start putting his stamp on the look of the Canadiens. So often on July 1, teams have the chance to improve, but must be cautious when it comes to length and financial numbers of the contracts offered, especially at a time when overpaying can be an easy trap to fall into. Make no mistake, the Minnesota Wild for example have improved their team, but at a very high price. While its exciting now, you have to wonder if their roster will still include their high priced talent 13 years from now. Just ask the Islanders and Canucks how things can change when long term deals look great at the outset. It was no secret that the Habs needed to increase their team toughness, and Bergevin addressed those needs, but did it by avoiding big contracts and long terms. A smart move considering there is labour uncertainty heading into September. The acquisitions of Colby Armstrong and Francis Bouillon will add some depth and sandpaper to the line-up, yet both being one-year deals at affordable prices, also allow the flexibility that if things dont work out, they could be moved at the deadline, or worst case, set free at the end of the season. As for Brandon Prust, they have added a much needed physical presence and a different look to their fourth line. While the length is four years, it provides another contract that does not weigh them down, and could always be moved if need be, but if Prust is put in the right role and excels as he did under John Tortorella, then he will quickly become a fan favourite at the Bell Centre. There is still some work to be done before training camp opens, and it will be an off-season where General Managers will tread carefully not knowing what lies ahead. Yet, there are still several big parts available via the trade route that will act like a domino effect through the league and it will be interesting to see where all the parts land. While the Habs might not be at the top of the active list, look for Bergevin and company to still be in the mix some way or another with an eye on improving their roster even more. Even if the moves to come arent necessarily the big splash moves at the moment, they could be moves with a ripple effect, such as addition by subtraction when it comes to some players and contracts. Whether or not more movement happens, the Canadiens are already a different team than the one that finished the season, and by the looks of early July, one that will be much tougher to play against this year, which is something a lot of Habs fans were calling for. This is the fourth time since Brodeur broke into the league in 1992 with the Devils that he has been involved in a work stoppage. Ramirez lined an RBI single over a drawn-in infield in the ninth inning, and Dodgers completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs with a seesaw 7-6 victory on Sunday.NEW YORK -- Officially -- at least in their comments -- NFL players and coaches arent concerning themselves with refereering. The NFL and its locked-out officials werent talking two days before the season begins, a clear indication replacements will be on the field for Wednesday nights opener. Doesnt matter, according to many of the guys who call the plays or carry them out. "Were going to play the games regardless," Chargers All-Pro safety Eric Weddle said Monday. "Everyone makes mistakes. I make mistakes. Its just the way human nature is. You cant get hard on guys that are trying to do the best they can. Youve just got to deal with it. "Each week, each game, each practice, theyll get better, so its not a concern of ours. Regardless, weve got to go out there and execute and take it out of their hands. Lets go out and play good football, execute at a high level and then they wont be in position to throw flags and make judgment calls." Broncos coach John Fox echoed those thoughts. "In this game youve got to overcome a lot of things," Fox said. "Youve got to overcome the other team. Sometimes youve got to overcome your own mistakes. So, officials have always been a part of it and theyve never been an excuse. So, I dont care whos out there, weve got to worry about how were playing and well deal with whatever they call, whether its old guys, new guys, middle guys. Their stuff sometimes influences the game, but youve got to overcome that." Both sides met for three days last week, but did not reach an agreement to end the three-month lockout. The replacement officials who worked the preseason games amid much criticism will handle the Cowboys at Giants opener and the other 15 games on the weekend. "You just have to play your game. You cant even pay any attention to it now at this point," Giants receiver Victor Cruz said Monday. "You just have to go out there and trust that they are spending time in the meeeting rooms and those referee rooms, reading the plays and getting the calls down. " The league and the NFL Referees Association, which covers more than 120 on-field officials, are at odds over salary, retirement benefits and operational issues. The NFL has said its offer includes annual pay increases that could earn an experienced official more than $200,000 annually by 2018. The NFLRA has disputed the value of the proposal, insisting it would ultimately reduce their compensation. With the stalemate, the NFL will use replacements in the regular season for the first time since the opening week of 2001, days after the terrorist attacks. Many of those replacements came from the highest levels of college football, something that has changed drastically this year. The current replacement crews are comprised of mainly of officials from the Arena League, and the NCAA Division II and III levels. The league said it will handle the officiating assignments the same way it does in any other year, with the crew for Wednesday nights game not being announced in advance -- even though theres increased interest in who works the game. "Its one of those things where you just look out there and its like the difference between having a high school guy play in the NFL versus an NFL guy playing in the NFL," Vikings punter Chris Kluwe said. "The speeds totally different. Those guys are trying hard, but theyre just not used to the speed of the game and theyre missing a lot of stuff." But they are missing stuff for both teams. Coaches and players alike are trying not to let that enter their minds as they prepare for their openers. "I know that these guys are coming in here doing the best that they can, but its really out of our control. It doesnt matter if we have flag football officials, weve got to go out and play the best that we can and hopefully get a few calls along the way," Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel said. ' ' '
