TORONTO -- Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion was scratched from Sundays lineup against Boston with a sore big toe on his right foot. Its the second time in three games that Encarnacion has been unavailable -- he sat out Fridays loss with lingering pain in his left wrist, one day after being hit by a pitch from Seattles Felix Hernandez. Encarnacion hit his 40th home run Thursday, topping 100 RBIs for the first time. He went 0 for 1 with three walks Saturday, and is two homers behind Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton for the major league lead. Shortstop Yunel Escobar and catcher Jeff Mathis were also scratched Sunday because of illness. Yan Gomes replaced Encarnacion at designated hitter, J.P. Arencibia was behind the plate, Adeiny Hechavarria moved from second to short and Omar Vizquel played second. The Dallas Stars filled a need by dealing for a scoring centre, giving up one of the games most effective agitators to get the trade done. Numbers Game looks at the Stars getting Derek Roy while sending Steve Ott to the Buffalo Sabres. The Stars Get: C Derek Roy. Roy, 29, was scoring a point-per-game (35 in 35) in 2010-2011 before suffering a torn quad muscle. While Roy stayed healthy last season, playing 80 games for the third time in the past four seasons, he wasnt nearly as productive, finishing with 44 points, his lowest total in any season in which he played at least 70 games. Nevertheless, it was also the fifth straight season in which Roy played at least 19 minutes per game and he faced high quality of competition on a nightly basis as the centre for Buffalos number one line. Roy has one year remaining on his current contract, at a cap hit of $4-million but an actual cost of $5.5-million, after which he will become an unrestricted free agent. In Dallas, he should move into the roster spot vacated by Mike Ribeiro, who was traded to Washington. There may not seem to be much to choose between smallish skilled centres like Ribeiro and Roy, Dallas might have more of a future with Roy, who is three years younger and, prior to his 2011-2012 season, had gone five straight seasons with at least 0.80 points per game and there are a total of 26 players leaguewide that have at least .80 points in at least five of the last six seasons. With some better luck and a fresh start in Big D, Roy could return to a more familiar scoring level. The Sabres Get: C Steve Ottt and D Adam Pardy.dddddddddddd One of the games foremost agitators, 29-year-old Steve Ott is more than just a pest, even if that is his calling card. There are two players that have at least 75 goals and 700 penalty minutes in the last five seasons and Ott is one of them (Scott Hartnell is the other). Furthermore, in the last three seasons, Ott has won 56.2% of his faceoffs. Ott played a career-high 18:21 per game last season, which might be more than hes needed if all goes well in Buffalo, but Ott will replace the grit that was lost when Paul Gaustad was traded to Nashville at the trade deadline. Ott has two years, at a cap hit of $2.95-million per season (with a real cost of $3.2-million per), left on his contract. 28-year-old defenceman Adam Pardy was signed to a two-year, $4-million contract as a free agent last summer and it was ill-advised before the ink had dried. Pardy averaged a career-high 16:28 of ice time per game, but only dressed for 36 games. Pardy has good size and could fill a role as an extra defenceman, but Buffalos current depth on the blueline also leaves the possibility that Pardy could be an expensive AHLer. With Roy departing, Tyler Ennis becomes the solid number one playmaker down the middle, but should also assure more offensive opportunities for Cody Hodgson or, failing that, Luke Adam, as scoring centres due to play more significant roles.
