PHOENIX -- Matt Cain did a little of everything. He pitched six strong innings, knocked in a pair of runs, took a nasty shot off the shin, then slid hard into second base. The result was a sorely needed 5-2 victory for the San Francisco Giants, their first win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in 10 tries. "What an old-school type effort Cain gave us," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "Pitched, swung the bat, ran the bases. Got the big hit wed been looking for. He just looked very determined out there." Cain allowed a run and three hits in six innings, striking out eight, walking two and hitting a batter in his first victory in five outings. Cain called Bochys "old-school" comment "a huge compliment." "Thats kind of the way I was brought up," he said. Trevor Cahill (2-4) took the loss as Arizona was beaten for the sixth time in seven games. "We didnt play well," manager Kirk Gibson said. "We didnt swing the bats well, struck out 11 times and took five of them. They did a good job of pitching us but we really didnt have that many opportunities. We were 0 for 6 on with runners in scoring position. They had a lot more pressure on us." Cain singled twice. His second brought in two runs after Cahill had hit consecutive batters with two outs in the sixth. Cain said he likes to show that he can do more than just pitch. "Thats the nice part about being in the National League," he said, "is you feel like you can benefit to the team in different ways, whether its getting a bunt down or doing different things. You always love to be able to contribute when you have a chance to at the plate." Santiago Casilla pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save in eight tries. San Francisco beat Arizona for the first time since last Sept. 3. "We know it," Cain said of the Giants troubles with the Diamondbacks. "Weve talked about it. Weve had the situation to where we felt like weve played good enough to beat these guys. We need to really focus down and play better. I think thats something we really need to carry over to tomorrow." Melky Cabrera extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single and pair of RBI doubles. Angel Pagan went 3 for 3 with a double and a walk for the Giants. Cabreras RBI double gave San Francisco the lead for good 2-1 in the fifth. Cain started the inning with a single, then Gregor Blanco reached on a fielders choice. Blanco stole second before Cabreras double down the right-field line brought him home. In the sixth, Pagans leadoff single was erased with a double play, but Cahill hit Manny Burriss and Brandon Crawford -- the seventh and eighth batters in the order -- to bring up Cain, whose single to right ended the Arizona starters night. Cahill entered the game with a 3-0 record and 1.20 ERA in four career starts against San Francisco. San Francisco loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, thanks in part to third baseman Ryan Roberts fielding error, but Joaquin Arias bounced into a forceout at home, then reliever Craig Breslow struck out Burriss looking. The Diamondbacks cut it to 4-2 in the seventh helped by shortstop Crawfords eighth error of the season and second in as many nights. Jason Kubel doubled with one out and took third when the left fielder Cabrera threw wild to second. After two outs, pinch-hitter Paul Goldschmidt grounded to Crawford, whose throwing error allowed Kubel to score. The Giants added a run in the ninth when Belt led off with a triple and scored on Cabreras double. Third baseman Arias robbed Ryan Roberts with a slick fielding play to end the eighth. The Rampage, who entered Tuesday night last in the American Hockey League, defeated the first-place Abbotsford Heat 3-2 in overtime. The Heat loss comes after giving up one at home to the Hamilton Bulldogs, who were in the AHLs cellar but climbed out with a 3-0 win Saturday. "Every night, because theyre a first-place team, they have a bulls eye on their back," said San Antonios Jon Rheault. "People are always going to try to bring their best." San Antonio is now 3-1-0 on their current road trip that wraps up Wednesday in a rematch of the two Western Conference teams. "We just needed a chance to get away for a little bit together as a team," said head coach Chuck Weber. "Last year when we came to Abbotsford we were in a similar predicament with a very short-handed team and got a couple wins so hopefully we can have the same success this time." Defenceman Jason DeSantis scored 35 seconds into overtime, taking a feed from former Heat forward and current Rampage leading scorer Rheault and chipped the puck over goalie Barry Brust for his first of the season. The play began with a turnover in the Rampage zone. "They had good pressure coming into our zone," said Rheault. "(Rampage goalie Jacob Markstrom) made a save and (Tyson) Strachan kind of batted it out of the air. I kind of picked it up and had probably three-quarters of the ice three-on-two. DeSantis did a great job driving through, clearing the lane for me. Its exactly how you draw up a three-on-two. He got rewarded by getting that goal. I made a pass over to Drew Shore and he made a great pass back." Rheault, who until last week was the all-time leading scorer for the Heat, has 18 points with the Rampage this season, including 14 in 12 November games. "He got off to a bit of a slow start for us but he really picked it up for us," said Weber. "He and Drew Shoore have created a nice combination together.dddddddddddd Hes a little under the weather right now but he gave us everything he had, on both special teams too. He works hard every night and I hope he can continue to build on that." Colby Robak and Greg Rallo scored in regulation for San Antonio (9-11-3), while Markstom made 32 saves in the win. Roman Horak had a goal and an assist for the Heat (13-3-5), while Max Reinhart also scored. The Rampage jumped out to an early lead after a giveaway by defenceman Chris Breen. James Wright intercepted a clearing attempt and threw the puck on net. Brust kicked it out but Wellman capitalized on the rebound at 3:24. "Getting that first goal put the thought in our mind, OK, we can beat this team," said Rheault. The Heat evened the score less than three minutes later with Rheault in the penalty box. Paul Byrons slapshot was deflected by Horak, giving the Czech winger 12 goals on the season. The Rampage regained the lead before the end of the first. Rallo took a feed from Robak and wired a wrist shot just inside the post on the short side, giving him a team-leading seven goals on the season. Abbotsford tied the game again at 10:37 of the second period. Horak dug the puck out from behind the net and threw it out to Reinhart, who one-timed it past Markstrom for his first of the season. Reinhart had four points in five games for the Heat late last season but had been held to just two assists this year through 19 games. "Thats the longest Ive ever gone without a goal and its the tightest Ive ever hugged someone for giving me an assist," he said. Brust had a nice glove save off of Strachan with less than two minutes to go in regulation but he was beaten by the only shot he faced in the extra frame. "We definitely stole one tonight," said Rheault. "On the road, going into the third period with a chance to win the game, and then winning in overtime, its a good moment for our team right now."
