TORONTO -- Rajai Davis and John McDonald werent around at the start of Torontos game against the Seattle Mariners. They certainly made their presence felt at the end of it. McDonald hit a sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the 14th inning to score Davis, and the Blue Jays beat Seattle 6-5 Tuesday to send the Mariners to their 10th loss in a row. Davis got in position for the winning play by stealing second and third before McDonald brought him home. "When Rajai gets on late in the game were certainly going to turn him loose," manager John Farrell said. "You could see the distraction that it caused the pitcher on the mound. Once again hes a difference maker when he gets on base." Davis had three stolen bases on the game and has 28 for the season. "I think thats where I have my most fun, on the bases," Davis said. "Its just exciting being in that position with the opportunities to use the running game." With Travis Snider starting in centre field to give the Blue Jays three left-handed bats in the outfield, Davis did not enter the game until he ran for shortstop Yunel Escobar in the ninth. McDonald took over at shortstop in the 10th and Davis moved into centre with Snider moving to left. The Blue Jays also had contributions from a couple of players who have been missing in recent games. Jose Bautista, the major-league home run leader with 31, tied the game with a single in Torontos three-run seventh. He missed the previous three games with an ankle injury. Casey Janssen (3-0), who was reinstated from the disabled list before the game pitched one inning to earn the win. Jamey Wright (2-3) allowed two walks and one hit in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss. "You cant look past what the bullpen did tonight," Farrell said. "They did an outstanding job. Casey joined us again and ended up on the mound at a critical time. And the two-plus innings of work by Zep (Marc Rzepczynski) was outstanding. And we executed well defensively late. Just a solid contribution from everybody from the bench tonight." Mariners rookie Michael Pineda, who earned his first major-league victory against the Blue Jays in Seattle on April 12, couldnt hold a 5-2 lead as Toronto tied the game with three runs in the seventh. Pineda allowed seven hits, including Adam Linds two-run homer in the first, and five runs in 6 1/3 innings. Toronto left-hander Brett Cecil allowed five runs and nine hits, including home runs by Greg Halman and Brendan Ryan, in seven innings. Seattle scored a first-inning run when Ryan doubled and Dustin Ackley singled. Linds 17th homer of the season into the second deck in right field gave Toronto (48-49) a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first. Linds homer scored Yunel Escobar who led off with a single, extending his consecutive game streak of reaching base to a career-best 23. Cecil let that lead slip away in the second as the Mariners (43-53) had a three-run homer from Halman and a solo shot from Ryan. The Mariners had not homered in nine games going back to July 5, scoring a total of 11 runs over that span. It was the first time they hit more than one homer in a game since June 28. In the 15 games between then and Tuesday they had hit three homers and scored 29 runs. "He was up in the zone," Farrell said, "and for him to be effective e up here he has to pitch in the bottom of the strike zone." Farrell was seen talking to Cecil in the dugout before the bottom of the second. "He just told me basically to get my stuff together and get the ball down and thats about it," Cecil said. There was no more scoring until the Blue Jays ended Pinedas start in the seventh. Aaron Hill led off with a double and Corey Patterson walked with one out. Escobars third hit of the night, a double, scored Hill. Left-hander Aaron Laffey replaced Pineda and retired Eric Thames on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 5-4. Bautista came through with the game-tying single against right-hander Jeff Gray. The Blue Jays had a chance in the ninth after Davis stole second and continued to third on catcher Miguel Olivos throwing error, but Thames grounded out to send the game to extra innings. Kirk Hinrich returned to the Bulls on Tuesday. The nine-year veteran rejoins the team that drafted him in 2003 and with which he played his first seven professional seasons. "We went into this off-season, it was probably our biggest priority to get a combo guard," Bulls general manager Gar Forman said. "He knows his teammates. We just think its going to be a perfect fit not just for the coming year, but for the future." Hinrich will likely start at point guard for Chicago while star Derrick Rose rehabilitates from left knee surgery. The MVP of the 2010-11 season is expected to be out until at least January, though recent reports suggest that Rose may not return until March. When Rose returns, Hinrich will likely become a key part of a revamped Chicago bench. "We know Derrick is going to take his time to come back and everybody is going to have to step up while hes out," Hinrich said. "Im really looking forward to playing with him as well. I felt like toward the end of my last year here, we played really well together." Rose and Hinrich started 50 games during the 2009-10 season, during which Chicago went 31-19. Now 31, Hinrich has been plagued by injuries since leaving the Bulls, missing a total of 28 games the last two seasons with Washington and Atlanta. Last season, he averaged a career low 6.6 points for the Hawks. "This off-season Ive been working really hard and havent really felt any ill effects," Hinrich said. "Knock on wood. I feel healthy and hopefully will be contributing to a very good team." Hinrich was a mainstay on the Bulls after being drafted in the first round from Kansas in 2003. Chicago made the playoffs in five of his seven seasons with the club. With Rose on the rise in 2010, the Bulls appeared to be on the cusp of big things. However, Hinrich was traded to Washington in a pre-draft trade in 2010 to clear room under the salary cap room for Chicagos failed attempts to sign one of that years major free agents, such as LeBron James and Dwayne Wade. "It was disappointment," Hinrich said. "I felt like we were at a place where we were ffinally ready to be good and I got traded.dddddddddddd Thats how it is in this business." Hinrich joins a roster in transition. The cap-strapped Bulls have lost several key parts from one of the leagues top benches this summer, including C.J. Watson, Ronnie Brewer, Kyle Korver and Omer Asik. Chicago has signed free-agent guard Marco Belinelli, a five-year veteran from Italy who started 55 games for the New Orleans Hornets last season, averaging 11.8 points. "If you look at Marcos career, each and every year he has shown steady improvement," Forman said. "We think that at 26 years old, theres still a lot of upside to his game." Belinelli said he talked with several other teams during his free agency, but felt like joining the Bulls gave him his best chance at a title. "When the Bulls called me, I was so happy because Chicago is maybe a team that can win the championship, and I can play with a star like Derrick Rose," Belinelli said. "I think this is the best opportunity for me to grow up and try to win the championship." When Rose returns, Hinrich will likely team with Belinelli in Chicagos second unit backcourt. Belinellis 39.3 per cent career mark from 3-point range will help replace the outside shooting of Korver, who was traded to Atlanta. "Maybe I can play something more than (Korver)," Belinelli said "I think hes just a shooter. I think maybe I can do something more than him. Im going to try to do my best." Another new Bull will be forward Vladimir Radmanovic, who was teammates with Hinrich in Atlanta last season. "Hes a knockdown shooter," Hinrich said. "Hes one of those guys that can be a matchup problem at (power forward) because its tough for big guys to get out there and check him." The two newest Bulls both expressed excitement at the prospect of playing for Tom Thibodeau, the leagues Coach of the Year for the 2010-11 season and the runner-up last season. "It was evident from watching the way they play that hes a very good coach," Hinrich said. "That was a huge factor in the decision. I was able to talk to him a couple of things and get more comfortable with how he saw things. I think its going to be a good relationship." ' ' '
