CALGARY -- Jon Cornish wasnt biting Thursday. On Wednesday, Saskatchewan head coach Corey Chamblin guaranteed Cornish wouldnt surpass 100 yards rushing when the Riders host the Calgary Stampeders on Sunday. That didnt bother Cornish, who says hes all about wins, not rushing yards. "You win or you lose and thats the only thing that really matters," he said following Thursdays practice. "If I have five yards and we win, Ill be happy with that. "I could care less what he has to say. I guess it could be almost unprecedented. Coaches have their various ways of trying to get in my head. To each his own." Calgary coach/GM John Hufnagel agrees. "Were going out there to try to win the football game," he said. "I dont care if Jon Cornish gets one yard and we win. "Thats the only thing that our mindset is." A day earlier, though, Chamblin was very much to the point regarding Cornish. "I will put the guarantee in the paper and say that Jon Cornish better not get over 100 yards rushing," Chamblin told reporters in Regina. "If he does, somebody wont be on that field come the next week. Im going to tell you that right now. "Were going to make a conscious effort to stop the run. If hes going to run the ball, hed better be running through six tacklers on his back. There shouldnt be open gaps." Bold words, indeed, considering Cornish ran for 159 yards on 24 carries in Calgarys last game against Saskatchewan, a 17-10 win Aug. 25 at Mosaic Stadium. But the Riders held Cornish to 39 yards rushing on 11 carries in a 41-38 loss at McMahon Stadium on July 19. "I dont really worry about what the other team does, Ive always emphasized that," Cornish said. "Its about what we do. "If we do everything right, I cant speculate about what theyll do. When you make guarantees and stuff, being an honourable man you have to follow through with it. Unfortunately, he made one that will negatively affect somebody." Stopping the 27-year-old Cornish wont be easy. The native of New Westminster, B.C., is the CFLs rushing leader with 880 yards and is a focal point of Calgarys offence. "When you play the Calgary Stampeders, one of the areas that you want to make a point with your football team is trying to stop the running game," Hufnagel said. "Weve been a good rushing team since I came on board. "Weve been up there in the league stats. That doesnt surprise me that theyre trying to stop our running game. Maybe I wouldnt have put it so eloquently, but thats all Im going to say." But Saskatchewan counters with a stingy defence thats ranked second against the run (92.2 yards per game) and fewest points allowed (21.3 per game). "He set the bar a little bit lower," Cornish said of Chamblin. "I think theyre going to come out really focused and trying to lay some licks and stuff, sew me up. "When you know about it, it gives you something to focus on. Its not really something I worry about too much, stats on the field. You go out and play. At the end of the day, win or lose, thats the thing you care about." Guarantees aside, the game is an important one for Saskatchewan (5-6), which enters weekend action tied for third in the West Division with Edmonton. Calgary (7-4) is alone in second. And if the Riders concentrate too much in stopping the run, Cornish said that will open up other areas for quarterback Kevin Glenn to exploit. "If you want to dedicate that much of your resources to stopping the run, I definitely believe that we are a multi-headed monster," Cornish said. "Youll have to stop other aspects of our game as well." wholesale nfl jersey . The chance has arrived, and not how he wanted it to go. He will be replacing an old friend on an interim basis in the middle of a season because of a serious illness. The longtime NFL offensive co-ordinator has no illusions about the job as he tries to help the Colts get better while everyone hopes coach Chuck Pagano returns soon from leukemia treatments. "This isnt a head coaching job for me right now," Arians said after being named Indys interim coach Monday. "Its just an expanded role as co-ordinator until Chuck comes back." Arians was an obvious choice. The Colts front office followed Paganos advice and hired Arians, an assistant who had coached with or against Pagano for the better part of a decade. Hes someone who mentored three quarterbacks selected No. 1 overall (Peyton Manning, Tim Couch and now Andrew Luck) and has the same kind of personality that hooked the Colts on Pagano. Team owner Jim Irsay and new general manager Ryan Grigson also liked his previous experience in Indy and his resume. Arians also played a key role in the development of Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and won two Super Bowl rings with the Steelers -- one as the receivers coach, the other as offensive co-ordinator -- before his forced retirement earlier this year. He spent two seasons as Paul "Bear" Bryants running backs coach at Alabama and six seasons as Temples head coach. "Hes a veteran. He knows this game well. He has a great synergy with the staff and with Chuck," Grigson said. "Hes going to be able to bridge that gap between Chuck and himself and this team because they (the assistants) have a brotherhood on that staff like Ive never seen. Chucks our brother, and we are all here for him. Bruce is the man to lead us forward while our leader is down." Arians understands this peculiar predicament better than most. In two decades as an NFL assistant, Arians has seen and done just about everything. And five years ago, Arians was the one being diagnosed with cancer. He needed a radical prostatectomy just before the NFL draft. "That phone call is not a fun one," Arians recalled. "I was sitting in my office and they kept telling me theres nothing wrong, nothing wrong and then the doctor calls and tell you youve got cancer. You really dont remember the next 24 hours. ... Ill tell you I could hardly drive home. Its devastating to get that message.ddddddddddddThen you figure out, like we always do, whats the plan." The plan in Indy is to let Arians call the shots temporarily. Players universally approve. "Coach Arians and I spoke briefly about making sure the communication is not lost, so I dont think it will be," Luck said. "Hes seen everything in the world of football, so Im sure hell do a great job and still manage to keep his (finger on the) pulse of everything the offence is doing." Arians intends to keep calling plays, as he had planned to do if ever got that elusive head-coaching gig. Indys defence is embracing the choice, too. During the first practice without Pagano, players were surprised to see just how quickly -- and smoothly -- Arians could adapt to his new duties. And though it sounded strange coming from the mouth of a longtime offensive guy, Arians wasted no time in praising the defence for forcing a couple of late turnovers. "It was odd, awkward," outside linebacker Robert Mathis said, drawing laughter. "We like to have fun during practice and he likes to talk trash to us, so to see him cheering for us, it was a little different." How long Arians will be pulling double duty isnt clear. Pagano was admitted to an Indianapolis hospital last Wednesday to begin treatment. Dr. Larry Cripe, Paganos physician, said the coach will be treated with chemotherapy and drugs -- a process that usually requires patients to spend four to five weeks in the hospital. Irsay said he expected Pagano to stay a bit longer, six to eight weeks, and does not anticipate Pagano taking over his full head-coaching duties the rest of this season. If Pagano doesnt make it back to the sideline before the Dec. 30 regular-season finale, Arians has given the Colts (1-2) another goal. "Why cant we extend the season so he can come back?" Arians said. Indys playoff quest restarts Sunday when the Packers (2-2) vis
