Over 30 years after the 1981 Montreal Expos came within one game of heading to the World Series, that same team reunited in Montreal on Saturday. As part of the Montreal Baseball Project, co-founded by former Expo Warren Cromartie, the 1981 team returned to help raise the profile of baseball in Montreal. Festivities for the teams return included being honoured at halftime in the Alouettes pre-season game Thursday and a golf tournament at the Île Perrot Golf and Country Club Friday. On Saturday, the team gathered at Ballantyne Park in Dorval to meet fans, perform baseball clinics for youngsters and along with Dorval mayor Edgar Rouleau, renamed the parks baseball field after the late Gary Carter with a ceremony. Proceeds raised from this past weekends celebration will benefit The Gary Carter Foundation and Montreals Cedar Cancer Institute. "We found this was a great way to commemorate a citizen of our city and resident of Dorval who was a great example for the sport," said Rouleau. Carter passed away in February and Rouleau said the city of Dorval had been looking for a way to honour Gary Carter. While naming the field after Carter raises its profile, Rouleau, whos also a co-founder of the Montreal Baseball Project, said it wasnt so much as to increase baseball interest, as it was to honour Carter. "Sports are very important to Dorval and the West Island in general," he said. "The effort to bring a baseball team back is what will generate interest in the sport again. Baseball participation has dropped since the Expos left, so I feel getting a team back will help bring the interest back." Cromartie was a busy man this past weekend, but has thoroughly enjoyed his time in Montreal. "Ive been so happy just being back here," said Cromartie, whos spent the summer in Montreal. "Its been 30 years since I spent a summer here. The women are even more beautiful today." With over 700 people showing up at Ballantyne Park and many youngsters participating in the baseball clinics run by the former Expos in attendance, Cromartie was encouraged by the turnout. "This is where we have to start all over," he said. "It starts from the grassroots, because the young ones here have never seen a baseball game. I mean this is a part of our history since 1969. Its part of our legacy in Montreal, its part of who we are. We had a team before Toronto did. Weve got to continue this legacy. " This is just a small step in possibly getting a baseball team back in Montreal, but its a start nonetheless. Cromartie said the reunion may be a first-time thing, but wont be the last. "Were going to be doing this for quite a while," he said. "Well mix it up with different guys, but we want to do this over and over." The day didnt end in Dorval though, as the team headed to a similar event at Parc Hébert in St. Léonard. Fan interest didnt wane, as more than 500 showed up to meet the team and more kids participated in the clinics. Among those from the 1981 team included Hall of Famer Andre Dawson, Tim Raines, Larry Parrish, even manager Jim Fanning. Coming back for the weekend felt a lot like a homecoming for the team. "When I first got back here in Montreal this week, I didnt recognize a lot of things. For a second I wondered, where am I at?" said Parrish. "When I got downtown though, it felt like nothing changed, I felt right at home again." Former outfielder and fan favourite Tim Raines felt like he was coming back home. "Its like I never left," he said. "To get such a warm welcome after all these years is just awesome, I may have to come back more often." The festivities concluded Saturday evening, with the players attending a gala at the Sheraton Hotel, with both live and silent charity auctions. This whole weekend was just a first step for the Montreal Baseball Project to achieve its ultimate goal, and thats to bring a baseball team back to Montreal. The participation from young kids who didnt even grow up with a baseball team, still decked out in Expos gear was an encouraging sign. Thats just one step in what will be a long and difficult process. "I think for baseball to come back here, youd have to start with a minor league team," said Parrish. "You have to show that its sustainable here and of course location of the ballpark will be important too." "Its going to be one small step at a time," said Raines. "This is a good start and hopefully this leads to getting a team back." Cromartie is well aware that baseball interest alone wont get a team back in Montreal. Theres one other factor Cromartie highlighted in what it would take for Major League Baseball to return. "Deep pockets," he said bluntly. "And I need a champion, I need a winner. I dont need the talk; I need the walk. Maybe someone from the Cirque du Soleil can help or something." To keep track of the Montreal Baseball Project, visit http://mbp2012.com/ xingfantrade . The Pistons did that, and provided some late-game toughness. Brandon Knight had a career-high 31 points, including five 3-pointers, and Greg Monroe scored 17 points, helping the Pistons stave off three game-tying field goal attempts in the closing seconds of their 104-102 victory on Sunday night. "It was good to see how we responded." Frank said of the win, which also snapped a two-game losing streak. "There were 20 lead changes in that game. We kept our poise and our resolve." Will Bynum also had a season-high 12 assists on a night in which the Pistons were under their season average for turnovers and assisted on 25 of their 40 field goals. "The ball bounces funny sometimes," Knight said. "But still, youve got to be there and get some of those bounces and make some of the effort plays ... I gotta commend my teammates on making some of those effort plays toward the end of the game." The loss spoiled a big night for J.J. Redick, who tied a career high with 31 points and set a career high with eight 3-pointers. Jameer Nelson had 18 points and eight assists, and Glen Davis added 17 points and 12 rebounds. The Magic have lost five straight games, including 10 of 11 at home. Theyve also lost 10 straight games to teams with records below .500. "We tried," Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said. "I keep believing that its going to turn in our favour, to be honest with you. Im genuine. Im upfront with them. I tell them as fair as I can, that you continue to work hard, you dont skip steps. ... We will continue to be resilient, continue to push guys, but continue to hug them at the same time. "Thats what we do." The lead changed hands 10 times in the final period. The Pistons led 93-89 on a 3-pointer from the wing by Knight with just over six minutes to play. It would grow to five points a few possessions later on a floater by Bynum. The Magic found a way to rally. ETwaun Moore connected on a deep 3 to trim Detroits lead to 95-93. A Nikola Vucevic dunk tied it up, and Moores three-point play off a steal put the Magic up 98-95 with 2:50 left. Detroits rebounding kept alive back-to-back possessions, each ending in 3-pointeers by Knight, to put the Pistons back in front 101-98.dddddddddddd. The Magic got it back to 103-100 on another basket by Moore, but Davis came up short on a jumper, giving the Pistons the ball with under a minute to play. Orlando pulled down the rebound on a Detroit miss, but Redick fired an air ball from 3 on the other end, which was corralled by Detroit. Bynum was fouled with less than 10 seconds left and got 1 of 2 free throws to make it 104-100. Nelson was fouled on a 3-point attempt. He made 2 of the first 3, but the third rattled out. During a scramble for the rebound, the Magic got off three attempts that would have tied it, but came up empty as time expired. The Pistons took a 10-point lead into the break, but it was Redick who was the star of the first half. Redick scored 16 of the Magics first 18 points to start the game, and knocked down 6 of his 7 attempts from beyond the arc as Orlando took a 32-29 lead. The rest of the Magics lineup struggled to support him offensively, though, as Detroit responded with a 15-0 run to retake control. Redick was 7 for 10 from the field in the opening 24 minutes, compared to 9 for 33 for the rest of his teammates. Redick said he hopes the Magic keep a positive mindset as they begin a five-game road trip beginning Monday at Brooklyn. "It just seems like its getting more and more frustrating," he said. "The way were losing is tough. But we can control our mindset, our attitude, our perspective over these last nine games before the break. We have a chance to use this road trip to get better, and we will." The Pistons get one day off before hosting Milwaukee on Tuesday. Frank said ending the road trip with a win was big. "Its really great," he said. "We had a very tough loss after being up 17 in Chicago, (and) a very disappointing performance in Miami where we underperformed. Today, even though it wasnt perfect, the spirit was. Great collective team win. Great fight. "I think our guys showed some great resolve and I think its good to finish the trip on a positive note." Notes: Davis received a technical foul with 8:33 left in the third quarter. It was the fourth straight game he has received a technical and is his fifth of the season. ...The Pistons earned just their fifth road win of the season, improving to 5-16. ' ' '
