MANHATTAN – Seven years ago, Gary Bettman stood before a podium and explained away the second lockout of his tenure as NHL commissioner. "The best thing that I can say to our fans is were back, were going to be better than ever and were going to make it up to you," uttered Bettman in the summer of 2005, rarely changing in either tone or demeanor in announcing an end to the lockout. "We are looking forward to leaving the business of the game in the background. It has been in the forefront for way too long." What will he say this time around? How will he explain this lockout? Will he offer the truth, that greed consumed the game and its combatants, knowingly damaging the future of the league? Will he fight for the owners supposed right to a greater share of what had been a booming revenue pie? Will he argue against those dreaded, long-term cap-circumventing deals? Will he argue, as he did seven years ago, that this lockout was necessary for the "benefit of the game"? "We couldnt continue the way we were," he said with shaded defiance back then. "We couldnt have operated another season the way we were." Will he defend the fourth work stoppage of his tenure? Will he defend his record and pledge to return? "Im not going anywhere," he claimed then. "I love my job." Will he attempt to mend a widening and bitter bridge with the players who represent his league? "The greatness of hockey and the NHL is best measured by the character and commitment of our players," he once noted. Will he concede to the inevitable damage levied again to the game and its brand? Will he plead to the fans to come back? Again. "Youre the best fans in sports, please come back, we want you," said the man who has canceled two thousand, three hundred and twenty-three games at the helm of the league. "We will return this game to our fans with a promise," he continued in that momentous press conference seven years ago. "We will do everything, everything in our power to be the best that we can be and to earn your continued devotion. We know that this was a terrible time for everyone associated with the game. We pledge to our fans that we will do everything we can to make it up to you." "Its time our fans have some fun again and our objective is to give them all that they can handle." What will he say this time? Frankly, what can he say? The Braves have won 22 straight games started by Kris Medlen, who will take the mound today. Medlens only loss this season came in relief. The pair was left out of the 5-3 Spanish league loss to Real Betis and will also miss Thursdays first leg against HJK Helsinki. Martinez, a defender or midfielder, has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich.Every time we consider even starting to doubt him, it seems Anthony Calvillo pulls out another classic performance to remind us of his greatness. The 40-year-olds latest gem came in Montreals 38-25 win at Edmonton Friday night, where he threw for 327 yards and four touchdowns. Vintage Calvillo. With that performance, were once again reminded both of Calvillos overall greatness and impact on the game, and not just in Canada. Its generally accepted among football fans that great CFL players head to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame while the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio is reserved for NFLers. But should a player - a great CFLer -deserve consideration for induction into Canton? When its all said and done - and hopefully that isnt for another couple of years - should Calvillo, a lock for the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, also be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame? There are a few players with CFL experience who have their place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but they are players who also made significant impacts in the NFL; no one whose predominant impact came in the CFL has been inducted into Canton.dddddddddddd Warren Moon is one of those few in the Hall with big impacts on both sides of the border. Moon won five Grey Cups with the Edmonton Eskimos before experiencing success in the NFL, most notably with the Houston Oilers. Moons official biography in the Hall of Fame lists his CFL achievements, but shows only the logos of the four NFL teams he played on. The question with Moon is how much of an impact did his CFL successes have on his induction? Was his NFL play alone enough to merit induction into the Hall? And maybe Calvillo isnt the first CFLer youd like to see inducted into Canton; perhaps Damon Allen, the man who is second to Calvillo in all-time in passing yards, or Doug Flutie, who experienced varying levels of success in both the CFL and NFL, are deserving of consideration. But for now, lets focus on Calvillos credentials for Canton. The Rouge asks: does Anthony Calvillo deserve consideration for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame? ' ' '
