LONDON -- Playing in his opening match at the ATP finals, Novak Djokovic dived right in. The top-ranked Serb twice landed hard on the court Monday at the O2 Arena, but it didnt stop him from beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 (4), 6-3 and setting up a Wednesday showdown with Group A rival Andy Murray. "All those balls were out of my reach, so I tried to dive," Djokovic said. "I dont usually dive that much. I dont usually spend that much (time at) the net as well." Djokovic entered the season-ending tournament after losing in the second round of the Paris Masters last week. Despite describing himself as being physically down in that loss, the Australian Open champion showed no signs of fatigue against Tsonga. But he did struggle to impose his game on his French opponent, who had three break points in the first set but missed out on all of them. "To be quite honest, he was the better player throughout the first set," said Djokovic, who broke Tsonga twice in the second. "It was very important after the first set. Obviously I relaxed a little bit more, stepped into the court, played more aggressive, and it resulted with a straight-set win." The next match is not likely to be as cut-and-dry. Djokovic and Murray have played a few epic matches against each this year, including a five-set Murray win in the U.S. Open final. "When Im playing Andy, I need to be ready for long rallies and physically demanding match," Djokovic said. "So Im going to have a day tomorrow to recover and get ready for next challenge." The ATP finals is the season-ending tournament for the top eight players in the world. Fourth-ranked Rafael Nadal, however, pulled out because of injury. Group B, which includes six-time champion Roger Federer, will play Tuesday at the O2 Arena. The third-ranked Murray needed a wake-up call in the early match before beating Berdych 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, and he got it shortly after failing to convert his 10th break point. Murray, playing at home in Britain for the first time since winning his first major title two months ago, missed all seven of his break chances in the first set, and then wasted three more in the fourth game of the second set. After the third, he whacked the ball in anguish, but even that failed to make it to the other side of the court. Instead, it clanged off the sponsor sign hanging on the net. Berdych then put a forehand wide, and Murray finally earned the break he needed to take the second set when his Czech opponents forehand sailed long, making it 3-1. "Unfortunately there was just, well, small details that just decided today," said Berdych, who had wasted three break points in the previous game. "Just hit a forehand return, and it was just like small out. And who knows, it could be 2-1, early break after winning the first set." In the third set, Murray didnt waste his only opportunity. He converted the one break point he earned in that final set to take a 2-1 lead, and then lost only three points on his serve the rest of the way. "Indoor matches -- when both of us, I thought, served pretty well, werent losing too many points on our first serve -- it can hinge on a couple points here or there," Murray said. Murray was playing in Britain for the first time since ending the countrys 76-year wait for a mens Grand Slam champion. Although he reached the Wimbledon final and won the gold medal at the London Olympics, no British man had won a major tennis title since Fred Perry in 1936. "I wasnt thinking about that when I went out to play the match," Murray said of his victory in New York. "But the noise and the atmosphere at the beginning of the match was great." The cheering at the O2 Arena died down once the match got going, especially as Murray lost the first set. "I was maybe expecting more," Berdych said of the subdued crowd. Ryder Cup team surprised European captain Jose Maria Olazabal.Lincoln Saltdogs starter Ryan Sheldon called it "a good day." That means it wasnt a very good for the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Sheldon allowed no runs on six scattered hits over eight complete innings to lead the Saltdogs past the Winnipeg Goldeyes 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon in front of 7,015 onlookers at Shaw Park. With the win, the visitors put a halt to Winnipegs six-game winning streak and left the Goldeyes with a record of 18-7 after 25 games or one-quarter of the 2012 season. "It was a good day for me," Sheldon told the Shaw TV post-game show. "I made the pitches I needed to make. I had a better change than Ive had all season and while I didnt have a great cutter, it got the job done." Indeed it did. The Goldeyes and starter Ace Walker fell behind in the fourth inning and, despite some chances late in the game, just get a clutch when they needed it. Lincoln took the lead in the fourth when Tommy Collaro singled to score Stephen Holdren and then A.J. Miller grounded out to score Collaro. They made it 3-0 in the sixth when Miller singled home McDonald and extended the lead to 5-0 when McDonald singled home Asif Shah and Holdren with two out and the bases loaded. The Goldeyes had runners on second and third with one out in the sixth and couldnt score and then had runners on second and third with two out in the eighth and failed to capitalize. In the ninth, Winnipeg made it interesting off reliever Brandon Cooney. After Jon Weber grounded out, Yurendell de Caster walked, Luis Alen singled and both moved up 90 feet to third and seecond on a wild pitch.dddddddddddd After Josh Mazzola popped out, Kyle Days infield single scored de Caster and then Alen crossed the plate on an error to the Lincoln shortstop Joe Spiers. But with the bases loaded and two out, Saltdogs closer P.J. Zocchi struck out David Narodowski to end the game. "It was nice to have our hitters get some runs," said Sheldon. "When we got the lead, I just wanted to pitch my game and it worked out for us." Sheldon got the win (3-1, 2.41 ERA) while Walker (3-1, 3.68 ERA) suffered his first loss of the season. Zocchi picked up his league-leading sixth save. The Goldeyes still won the three-game series with Lincoln and have now gone 7-2 at home this season. "Were doing OK at home," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney on the TSN Sports Radio 1290 post-game show. "As long as we keep winning at home, well be OK." After the game, Forney announced that closer Nick Carr was done for the season. "Nick is going on the inactive list and hes been shut down for the season," Forney said. "He has a pretty serious labrum (shoulder) injury and he wont pitch the rest of this year. You never like to lose anybody to injury and I feel bad for Nick. Healthy, he would have been a good pitcher for us." The Goldeyes got on the bus after the game and headed south to Sioux City, IA., to face the Expolorers. Chris Salamida (1-0, 3.38 ERA) will get the start for the Goldeyes on Thursday night. The game can be heard, with Paul Edmonds, on TSN 1290 beginning at 6:30 p.m. ' ' '
