SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith threw a 14-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter of Sundays 24-24 tie against the Rams while playing with blurred vision before coming out with a concussion. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that Smith connected with Michael Crabtree six plays after he began experiencing blurred vision on a 1-yard keeper early in the second quarter. Six plays earlier, he had taken a vicious hit from St. Louis linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar. Smith scrambled to his left and started to slide before turning when Dunbar got him in the back of the neck with 1:10 left in the first quarter. He briefly grabbed his face mask and grimaced but stayed in the game. "He said he had the blurred vision after the quarterback sneak," Harbaugh said. "Theres no telling. Did that earlier hit contribute? I dont know. I dont know Alex knows for sure, either." Second-year backup Colin Kaepernick entered for the next offensive series after a hurried warm up. Because No. 3 quarterback Scott Tolzien was inactive, wide receiver and special teams player Kyle Williams would have stepped in at quarterback in an emergency. Harbaugh expressed concern at the thought the 28-year-old Smith played through some concussion symptoms. "Yeah, thats something, you dont want him out there with blurred vision," Harbaugh said. "We talked about it. What he expressed was he came up from the sneak and he had blurred vision and he felt that it would go away. He came over to the sideline and sat down and felt it would go away and it didnt. He told me he had blurred vision and thats when we made the move." Harbaugh said the QB improved overnight and would see a neurologist later Monday. His status is unclear for next Monday nights game against the Bears is uncertain. "Rather than speculate, well let it play out," Harbaugh said. "Theres a progression and evaluations that have to be gone through before well really know anyway. ... Hes doing much better, had a good night sleep last night, symptoms were positive today. Hell be visiting with the neurologist later this afternoon that will be the next step." Harbaugh, himself a 15-year NFL quarterback in his day, figures he had multiple concussions during his playing career. He appreciates the increased awareness and serious NFL stand on the issue. "I think its a major point of emphasis," Harbaugh said. "I dont have a medical degree. Im confident in the way the doctors, especially our doctors, their understanding of it and their professional opinion." Tolzien could be called upon to do more in practice this week as the NFC West-leading Niners (6-2-1) prepare for Chicagos visit to Candlestick Park in prime time. "Theres a possibility he could get more reps," Harbaugh said, unwilling to guess on Smiths status. "Well, certainly, Dr. Harbaugh wont be qualifying, quantifying that." Cheap NFL Jerseys China . NEW YORK -- After another long day of negotiations, NBA players and owners left with nothing more than plans for another meeting. Thats not what Commissioner David Stern had in mind, but its better than the cancellations that could have come if talks had fallen through. Both sides seemed to have plenty to say. An eight-hour meeting Wednesday brought the talk total to 24 hours over two days, and federal mediator George Cohen said bargaining would resume Thursday afternoon. "Everyone is extremely focused on the core issues, the difficult issues that confront them," Cohen said. Talks broke for the night so owners could have separate meetings at another hotel. Stern left negotiations after seven hours to join the owners for a presentation on revenue sharing. The sides have been divided over two main issues -- the division of revenues and the structure of the salary cap system. League officials originally said they wouldnt be available for talks Wednesday or Thursday because of board meetings. Stern wanted to bring a deal to them, at one point saying that if an agreement wasnt reached by Tuesday, Christmas games could be cancelled. Instead, the talks continue. Owners will meet with players again Thursday after their board meeting, the first time during the 111-day lockout they will have bargained for three consecutive days. "The discussions have been direct and constructive, and as far as we are concerned, we are here to continue to help assist the parties to endeavour to reach an agreement," Cohen said. Cohen said players and owners met in a variety of settings during mediation, sometimes in subcommittees, other times in groups as large as 40 people. Flanked by deputy mediator Scot Beckenbaugh, Cohen made his statement to reporters and did not take questions. Neither side commented, honourring Cohens request that the sides keep mum.dddddddddddd Without a deal this week, Stern might have to decide when a next round of cancellations would be necessary. The season was supposed to begin Nov. 1, but all games through Nov. 14 -- 100 in total -- have been scrapped, costing players about US$170 million in salaries. Talks resumed Wednesday morning, just eight hours after a marathon 16-hour session. And they continued even after Stern left with Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck, the planning committee chairman, and NBA president of league and basketball operations Joel Litvin. Stern has said owners will have an expanded revenue sharing package among teams once the collective bargaining agreement has been completed. The union has pushed for it to be part of the CBA discussions, believing better sharing among teams would help owners address what they said was $300 million in losses last season. But Stern said recently he is confident players would approve the owners new system. Players believe owners attempts to make the luxury tax more punitive and limit the use of spending exceptions will effectively create a hard salary cap, which they say they will refuse to accept. Also, each side has formally proposed receiving 53 per cent of basketball-related income after players were guaranteed 57 per cent under the previous CBA. They talked about a 50-50 split, but players rejected it and the league has said it wont go beyond that number. Unable to make any real headway in recent weeks on either item, both sides welcomed the presence of Cohen, who also spent 16 days trying to resolve the NFLs labour dispute in February and March. Their first day together produced a bargaining session that was more than twice as long as any previous one since owners locked out players when the old CBA expired June 30. ' ' '
