NEW YORK -- The head of the baseball players union says there have been talks with Major League Baseball about increasing the sports drug testing program. Michael Weiner spoke Wednesday after a meeting of the unions executive board. He said he expected announcements about the drug program "before too long." Weiner says the union and MLB have spoken about adding in-season tests for human growth hormone next year. There also is discussion about making the tests more sophisticated for all performance-enhancing drugs. Earlier this week, Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz became the eighth player suspended this year under the big league drug program. The eight bans are the most since 2007 and Weiner said the increased number of positive tests has "caught the attention of both sides." Weiner said in August that hes been undergoing treatment for a brain tumour. He said hes doing well and that there have been no major side effects. Hebert hurt his left ankle on Wednesday, an injury he jokingly referred to as a bug bite. He hopes it will heal enough to play on Sunday when Montreal faces the visiting Toronto Argonauts in the CFL East Division final. "Its starting to go down a bit, but it still feels like Ive been bit so I have to take the proper precautions to get myself as best as possible," the 32-year-old said. "I just wanted to try to move around a bit and see if Ill be able to go. "No decision is made yet. Itll be up to the coaches and training staff after seeing my movement, or lack thereof." But the decision will be made by the coaches and trainers. "Theres going to be a lot of trust involved here," the Eunice, La., native said. "I have to trust that if they say Im not the guy because of my condition, then Im not the guy. But Ive never seen an ant bite keep a bird down." If he cannot play, Canadians Marc-Olivier Brouillette and Daryl Townsend would likely suit up at safety, and it would open a spot for another import player.
