CHICAGO -- Matt Garza got enough run support to pull out a rare home win. Garza pitched effectively into the eighth, Aramis Ramirez had a tie-breaking two-run single, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 on Monday. "Garza was fantastic," Cubs manager Mike Quade said. "He pitched around a couple of mistakes. He hasnt had many leads and he continues to pitch well." Garza (8-10) gave up six hits and three runs -- one earned -- while striking out eight and walking three to win for just the second time at home since June 27. He had to work around two errors, which increased the Cubs league-worst total to 118. "The toughest part is trying to control my own emotions," Garza said. "Im not going to worry about anybody else." Garza came in with just four wins in 14 starts at Wrigley Field despite a 2.76 home earned-run average. "I think (Garza is) a horse. I do," Quade said. "His ERA has been fine. I think hes capable of better. I think well see better." Carlos Marmol finished up for his 32nd save, setting down the Reds in order in his first appearance since allowing a two-out grand slam to Pittsburghs Derrek Lee on Saturday during his NL-worst ninth blown save. "I know its tough for everybody blowing some saves," Marmol said. "Tomorrow is a new day. Who knows whats going to happen tomorrow?" Ramirez had his two-run single in the fifth, walked twice and scored a run. Starlin Castro added a single, walk and two runs, which turned to be enough for Garza. Dontrelle Willis (0-5) allowed six hits and four runs over seven innings, striking out eight and walking five. Drew Stubbs singled, walked and scored a run, Yonder Alonso had two singles, a run and an RBI. Willis made his 200th career start looking for his first big-league win since June 5, 2010. He has won just three of his last 38 starts, going back to 2008. "He was throwing the ball great, especially in the early innings," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. The Reds havent scored more than three runs for Willis in any of his 11 starts this season. "Its frustrating because Ive pitched worse and won," Willis said. "But at the same time, I like the way me and (rookie catcher Devin) Mesoraco worked back there today. Im going to continue to battle and fight and hopefully Ill get a win and then theyll come in bunches. With a game-time temperature of 17 degrees Celsius and a 35 kilometres per hour wind howling in from centre field, it was a day made for the pitchers. Stubbs walked and scored on Alonsos single in the first to get the Reds on the scoreboard first. Willis retired the first nine Cubs in order, three by strikeout. He threw just 29 pitches in his first three innings, 24 for strikes. The left-hander lost track of the strike zone in the fourth, walking the bases full. Soriano tied the score with a first-pitch single to left but Willis recovered to leave the bases loaded. Willis got two quick outs in the fifth, but five straight Cubs hitters reached as they scored three runs. Castro singled with two outs. Willis could have escaped the inning, but Alonso couldnt track down Reed Johnsons high fly ball into the swirling wind in left. The ball stuck in the ivy, sending Castro back to third. Ramirez then lined a single to left, putting the Cubs up 3-1. Two batters later, Willis threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded, driving in Ramirez and capping the Cubs rally. The Reds cut the lead to two when Alonso scored an unearned run on a Mesoracos groundout in the seventh, the rookies first career RBI. Cincinnati pulled within a run when Castro misplayed Joey Vottos grounder in the eighth, allowing Brandon Phillips to score. Votto is a native of Toronto. NOTES: The Cubs activated RHP Andrew Cashner (strained right rotator cuff) from the 60-day disabled list. Cashner hasnt pitched in the majors since suffering the injury on April 5, his only outing of the season. Mesoraco made his first big-league start as Willis battery mate. The pair worked together at triple-A Louisville, where Willis went 5-2 earlier this season. The area around Bronson Arroyos left knee was wrapped and the righty walked with a slight limp before Mondays game, but Baker said he expected Arroyo to make his next start. Arroyo was hit in the fleshy area above the knee by a Rafael Furcal liner drive on Sunday. Mike Leake starts on Tuesday for Cincinnati against the Cubs Rodrigo Lopez. Leake leads the Reds with 11 wins on the season. cheap jerseys from china . Theyve done just that, regaining the NL West lead and improving to 5-2 since his punishment was announced last week. The Argos held a players-only meeting Tuesday to discuss the contentious matter and with good reason. Through 11 regular-season games, Toronto is the CFLs most penalized team (124 calls for 1,147 yards). And that was especially evident in the clubs 28-23 road loss to the B.C. Lions, a game that saw Toronto flagged 13 times for 124 yards. Younger said players havent decided yet on what form of punishment will be handed out -- be it fines or offenders running sprints or gassers after practice -- but all were in agreement the issue needed addressing. "We just have to find a way to get better and be more accountable to our teammates," he said. "Were not looking at it as the end of the world kind of thing but we know if we eliminate the penalties it will give us a better chance to win games." First-year head coach Scott Milanovich has continually preached the importance of discipline to his players since training camp. But it seems the message has often fallen on deaf ears as Toronto is the only CFL team to have amassed over 1,000 yards in penalties this season. This time, however, Milanovich is hopeful peer pressure will help resolve the issue. "Any time they take accountability for their actions and for the team its much better than when a coach stands up and says something in front of them," Milanovich said. "When you (a coach) say too much it becomes in one ear out the other. "Its better when it comes from their peers, its much more important in my opinion. Hopefully it will carry some weight. Clearly something needs to be done to get it rectified and I think its a good start." Despite the penchant for penalties, Toronto (6-5) has succeeded on the field, currently standing second in the East Division behind first-place Montreal (7-4) heading into an important road contest Sunday against the Alouettes. With so much riding on the final seven regular-season games -- like top spot in the conference and home-field advantage for the division final -- the reality is a bad penalty in a big game could come back to haunt the Argos. "Last week is a perfect example," Milanovich said. "One play never makes a difference but you could look at a number of those penalties and say, IIf we hadnt had this one we wouldve scored a touchdown.dddddddddddd If we wouldnt have done this one they wouldnt have scored. "I dont think we even need to wait for that (bad penalty coming back to hurt Argos). I think it has been proven." Younger agreed. "We got 12 penalties (against B.C.) and Im going to say three of them I can live with," he said. "The others were unacceptable. "Some are going to happen, like a facemask, that happens in football. Youre going to get some holding calls when you play an aggressive bump-and-run man-to-man. But there are too many unnecessary penalties." Still, Milanovich drew a lot of positives from Saturdays loss to the defending Grey Cup champions and the team that sports the CFLs best record at 8-3. "Im not the least bit discouraged about the way we played," he said. "Certainly we can play better and execute better but you also have to give them credit, theyre a good football team and we battled them for four quarters. "We wouldve liked to play tighter relative to the penalties and some of the mistakes but we didnt and still had a chance to win. Ive said it a number of times, those guys believe they can beat anybody when they play well and I think they still believe that." Addressing the penalty issue is a touchy matter, though, because all coaches want their players to be aggressive, to play on the edge and attack at top speed. Often that leaves players precious little time to react to an on-field situation and decide to let up. "Its a fine line when you want to be aggressive and physical and do all those things," Milanovich said. "But then you have to play smart and pull off a guy when hes a yard out of bounds and not take a penalty that is unnecessary. "Those are the ones that are upsetting and concerning, the personal foul penalties. Theres going to be the occasional pass interference penalty when you play man-to-man defence but the thing we have to cut out is the personal fouls, the shoving after the whistle, things like that that are just unnecessary." And quarterback Ricky Ray knows exactly where the players can start addressing the issue. "I honestly believe it starts in practice," he said. "If guys are being lazy in practice or making mistakes in practice weve got to get it cleaned up before the game." ' ' '
