Pioneering country artist Linda Martell will be in the spotlight again this week for a special honor at the 2021 CMT Music Awards.

Martell, 80, receives the second annual CMT Equal Play award, recognizing his legacy as one of the first prominent black artists in country music.

In 1969, Martell's first single, Color Him Father, reached No. 22 on the Billboard Country Songs chart. That same year, she appeared as the first black country artist at the Grand Ole Opry.

In 1970, he released his first album, Color Me Country, but his time in the limelight was short-lived. Martell quickly cut ties with his original label Plantation Records and retired from the world of country music in the mid-1970s. Learn more from The Wookly.com
