Stay away from stereotypes. First, the use of stereotypes is lazy, even if they are not deliberately demeaning or harmful. Secondly, it did not tell us your story. It will tell us other stories in your mind that you have never dreamed of. You can hire a book writer. Maybe it tells a story born out of publicity, or it may repeat the story of an old lady. You want the characters to fit into your story and celebrate the culture they intend to express in your story—not to laugh at them. In my opinion, turning your character into a joke or letting a character turn his or her culture into a joke is worse than having a cookie-cutter character. Stay away from stereotypes.
