MEMPHIS, Tenn. Four University of Memphis players were selected in the MLB Draft that concluded on Saturday.
LHP Jacob Moody was the first Tiger selected as the Cincinnati Reds drafted the southpaw in the 17th round with the 515th overall pick. Moody compiled a 1 0 record in 27 career appearances, picking up the win at No. 4 Mississippi State in 2014. The Bartlett, Tenn. native is the fifth player drafted by the Reds and first since RHP Dan Langfield was picked by the Reds in 2012.
RHP Bryce Beeler was selected by the New York Mets in the 19th round with the 565th overall pick. Beeler stepped on the mound for the first time in his collegiate career in 2014 and sported a 2 2 record with a 4.61 ERA in 22 appearances spanning 27 1/3 innings of work. The Knoxville, Tenn. native nailed down eight saves and struck out 34 batters against nine walks. Beeler is the eighth Tiger selected by the Mets and first since Chad Zurcher in 2011.
SS Ethan Gross was picked by the Chicago White Sox in the 26th round at pick No. 768 overall. Gross played in a program record 225 games including a streak of 213 straight starts. The Mt. Juliet, Tenn. native finished his career with a .255 batting average after hitting .267 this past season. Gross is the fifth player in program history to be selected by the White Sox and the first since Josh Stewart was taken in the 1999 draft.
LHP Caleb Wallingford was chosen by the Los Angeles Angels in the 35th round with the 1,049th pick overall. Wallingford was 6 5 with a 2.44 ERA cheap jerseys in 14 starts and 88 2/3 innings of work. The Elkhorn, Neb. native struck out 70 while walking 24 and allowed only 24 earned runs in his 16 total appearances. Wallingford is the third player drafted by the Angels and first since Drew Martinez was taken in the 2011 draft.
Memphis' four selections in the 2014 draft mark the most since the 2011 season and only the fourth year since 1984 that the Tigers had four players drafted in one season.
