Asked a series of Kaepernick specific questions, Harbaugh consistently responded by speaking in general terms about Sunday's offensive failings, which included the 49ers' fewest net passing yards (46) since 2005 and their fewest total net yards (151) since 2006.

"I understand what you're doing," Harbaugh said. "What you're trying to do. Glomming on to somebody's opinion that thinks whatever they think. The main thing is we'll look at it and talk about it with our players and see the areas that we can improve. Just dissecting it as a unit, we had too many negative plays in the game."

The focus on Kaepernick came exactly one year after he began to emerge from backup to bona fide star. On Nov. 11, 2012, he replaced an injured in a tie game against the Rams, won the starting job and led the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

A calendar year later, he hasn't fulfilled the ridiculously high preseason expectation inspired by his smashing start (ESPN's : "I truly believe Colin Kaepernick could be one of the greatest quarterbacks ever").

After nine games, Kaepernick ranks 20th in the NFL in passer rating (83.0) and 29th in completion percentage (56.4). Last year, he had a completion percentage of 62.1 and a 99.0 rating in his 10 starts, including the playoffs.

Harbaugh's assessment? Whether it was Kaepernick's progressions or perceived regression, he wasn't about to publicly analyze his quarterback.

"Not going to go through, dissect position by position, raking anybody over the coals," Harbaugh said. "I don't think that's the best thing for us. We have a tough game coming up. We're not going to wallow in it. We're going to move on to New Orleans."

With a date against the Saints (7 2) on Sunday, Kaepernick could benefit from the presence of tight end , who left the loss to Carolina in the second quarter with a concussion.

Kaepernick's statistical dip this season has something to do with the absence of wideout and the fact that Davis has missed all or part of San Francisco's three losses. The 49ers have scored one touchdown in 18 full drives without Davis and Kaepernick has a 33.5 passer rating when Davis has been sidelined.

Davis, who suffered his second concussion since Dec. 23, isn't the only tight end whose playing status is iffy this week. Garrett Celek left the loss with a hamstring injury, leaving rookie as the only healthy tight end on the 53 man roster.

Will the 49ers, who have tight end on their practice squad, need to make a roster move this week? That was a question Harbaugh was willing to address.

"We're looking at some options right now, and there's some decisions to be made," Harbaugh said.
