This week they discuss Georges Laraques new autobiography, Eskimo running back Jerome Messams 1000-yard season, Detroit Lions players mocking Tim Tebow and the attire in womens boxing. Bruce Arthur, National Post: My thumb is up to Georges Laraque, for a revelation in his autobiography that deserves some scrutiny. In his unflinching memoir, Laraque not only says that he witnessed the use of performance-enhancing drugs in the NHL, but that early in his career he told the NHLPA it was going on. The union didnt do anything, of course, in the interest of collective bargaining; a drug testing plan didnt arrive until 2005, but its impossible to think it closed all the holes. Laraque didnt just point at enforcers; he said some star players were using, too. Laraque could have gone public at the time and put the pressure on, sure. But in an age where too many people hid behind the old our-players-wouldnt-do-that line, at least someone tried to do something. Steve Simmons, Sun Media: My thumb is up to Jerome Messam, the first Canadian running back to rush for more than a thousand yards in the CFL in more than a decade. Messams story is remarkable in any number of ways. Prior to this year, hed been something of a football screw-up and when the B.C. Lions all but gave him away to Edmonton in June, it was hardly noticed. Well, its being noticed now. How rare is a thousand-yard running Canadian? Sean Millington did it in once, in 2000. Orville lee did in once, in 1988. Only the legendary Normie Kwong managed to do it more than once. He did it four times. Messam may well be the best Canadian CFL runner since Kwong and for him and an improving Edmonton team, this may just be the beginning. Yes, Tebow has given new meaning to the football phrase "taking a knee," but mocking anyones religious beliefs should be as unacceptable as poking fun at someones race or ethnicity. You can rip the overmatched Tebow for his wonky delivery or faulty accuracy, but his conspicuous Christianity did not deserve this. We have heard so much from the NFL commissioner slash sheriff Roger Goodell about player comportment the past few years. Too bad Goodell has chosen now to remain silent.
