COMMERCE CITY, Colo. . -- Vicente Sanchez is quickly making a good impression with his new club. Sanchez scored a goal and knocked another in off an opposing player and the Colorado Rapids rallied for a 2-1 win over FC Dallas on a rainy Saturday night. David Ferreira scored for Dallas (10-8-10), which was dealt a blow in its late-season playoff push by an unfortunate bounce. Sanchez was playing just his fifth game with the Rapids, where he joined the team after playing in his homeland, Uruguay. He had two assists before Saturday and finally got his first goal with the Rapids. "Thats why Vicentes here and the fans are getting in love with him," Colorado coach Oscar Pareja said. Dallas, which went nearly three months without a victory before beating Chivas USA on Aug. 21, came into the game 2-0-1 in its last three to pull within two points of the Rapids for the final post-season spot. However, Colorado (12-8-9) made sure Dallas stayed outside the playoff picture by taking advantage of a miscue. With the score tied at 1-all, Sanchez sent a ball to the front of the net when Dallas defender Matt Hedges tried to make a sliding deflection. Instead, he knocked it into his own net to give Colorado the lead in the 65th minute. Ten minutes earlier, FC Dallas appeared to be in control. After fending off chances most of the game, Dallas capitalized on one of its few opportunities. Jair Benitez sent a low pass to the front of the goal from the left side. Ferreira raced through the defence and redirected the ball into an open net while sliding on the grass in the 51st. It was just the fourth shot of the game for FC Dallas. "We played some good soccer despite being a tough place to play," midfielder Je-Vaughn Watson said. "We got a beautiful goal from David, we had good chances to score again but we didnt capitalize." The Rapids tied it in the 58th as Watson tried to head Christopher Klutes chip-in out of danger, but the ball went to Sanchez, who blasted a shot past goalie Raul Fernandez. "I was able to score the goal, and it was good because we got the three points," Sanchez said through a translator. "If you score and the team doesnt win it doesnt mean anything." After the Rapids went ahead, Dallas had a few chances to tie it but goalie Clint Irwin preserved the lead. His biggest save came on Benitezs free kick during injury time. "After they went up 2-1 we were all over them. Unfortunately we didnt get the equalizer," Watson said. "We have six games remaining, were playing good soccer, we just have to keep on digging." The start of the game was delayed 54 minutes by lightning in the area. Rain, which has hammered the state since Tuesday and caused severe flooding in many areas, stopped before kickoff. The game was scoreless at half despite Colorados numerous chances in the first 45 minutes. The Rapids had near-misses in the first 10 minutes, and in the 26th Sanchez set up teammate Atiba Harris with a great opportunity. Sanchez saved the ball from going out in the corner, then lofted a pass to the front of the net but Harris header went off the turf and over the crossbar. Later, Edson Buddle was free just inside the penalty box but his blistering shot went wide left. "The first half we played very well, we spread the ball the way we wanted and had control of the game," Pareja said. "We had good chances." FC Dallas had few chances but nearly scored in the final minutes of the half when they got behind the defence. Irwin was able to scoop up the ball before Dallas could get a shot off. Still, that didnt stop Bylsma from making a switch he hopes will shift momentum in Pittsburghs highly entertaining but slightly bewildering first-round playoff series with the New York Islanders. Tomas Vokoun will get the start in net for the Penguins in Game 5 on Thursday, a move necessitated by three straight shaky performances by Fleury and Vokouns eye-popping numbers against the Islanders this season. "We brought Tomas Vokoun in to play big games for us," Bylsma said. The 36-year-old veterans next start might be the biggest of his career. The eighth-seeded Islanders tied the series at 2-all with a wild, momentum-swinging 6-4 victory on Tuesday night, one that seemed to further erode Fleurys confidence. New York scored three times in the games final 16 minutes, including a pair of soft goals that found Fleury woefully out of position. Fleury expressed his frustration afterward. His remorse, however, didnt stop him from being yanked in the playoffs for the first time in his career. The last time someone other than Fleury started a post-season game for the Penguins was in 2001. Vokoun, acquired in a trade with Washington last spring, served as 1b to Fleurys 1a during the regular season, going 13-4 with a 2.45 goals-against-average. He was even better against the Islanders, posting a perfect 3-0 record while stopping 98 of 101 shots. Now hell be tasked with doing something hes never done in his 15-year career, help get a team past the first round. Vokouns playoff record is 3-8, though those appearances came for overmatched Nashville teams in 2004 and 2007. The top-seeded Penguins arent overmatched. At the moment, though, they do appear a little overwhelmed. New York looked to be little more than a speedbump for Pittsburgh after the Penguins rolled to a 5-0 win in Game 1. Yet the Islanders have bounced back to win two of the last three while pumping 16 goals by Fleury. New Yorks dominant performance in third period of Game 4 allowed the Islanders to escape what would have been a 3-1 hole. It also gave their confidence another rocket-fueled boost. "Were hoping that they are a little rattled and they are a little worried about us because we think that we have every opportunity to win this series," New York defenceman Matt Carkner said. "Were here to win this series." Two more nights like Tuesday will have the Islanders into the second round for thee first time in 20 years. Julio Jones Jersey. New Yorks last playoff series win came against the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins in 1993. That series went seven games. This one has all the makings of heading there too. The longer things go, the more Pittsburgh hopes its star-studded roster dotted with Stanley Cup winners and Cup-hungry veterans will get into a rhythm. It hasnt happened in the last three games, as the Islanders have turned each contest into a track meet, luring the Penguins into sloppy mistakes New York has greedily turned into goals. No miscue loomed larger than a silly giveaway by reigning NHL MVP Evgeni Malkin in the third period on Tuesday. With the score tied at 4, Malkin was attempting to clear the zone when he decided to throw a pass toward the middle instead of safely up the boards. Islanders centre John Tavares picked up the lazy pass, swooped in on Fleury then squeezed off a wrist shot and the ensuing rebound that proved to be the game-winner. Pittsburgh star Sidney Crosby credited the Islanders for their relentless forecheck but allowed the Penguins could be considerably smarter with the puck. "Part of it is us not making bad plays sometimes, too," he said. "When theyre coming that hard the play needs to be made and youve got to execute or else theyre coming back the other way pretty quickly." New York has counter-punched the NHLs highest-scoring team much in the same way the Flyers did to the Penguins in the first round a year ago. Philadelphia knocked off Pittsburgh in six high-scoring, defence-optional games. The Penguins stressed they had learned a painful lesson. It hasnt exactly looked like it for most of the last three games. "Theyre playing aggressive and we plan on matching that and finding a way to win this series," Pittsburgh forward Jarome Iginla said. "I think this could be great for us." It could be great for the Islanders too. New York spent the last six weeks of the regular season scrambling to make the post-season. After needing a game to get their feet set, the Islanders have gone skate-to-skate against a team with far more experience about what it takes to be successful this time of year. Heading into a best-of-3 to determine who makes it to the conference semifinals, New York is only too aware that its not supposed to be here. The Islanders are playing with house money, or more specifically, Pittsburghs money. "Its where we want to be," Carkner said. "Weve been playing some pretty good hockey. To win (Game 4), that was a really gutsy win and were excited." ' ' '
