The National Womens 7s team landed in Las Vegas on Monday, ready to enter their first competition since securing the number one world ranking after an international tournament victory in Dubai this past December. The Dubai 7s tournament marked the first-ever IRB Sanctioned Womens 7s tournament where Canada defeated the defending World Cup Champions, Australia, along with Spain, Brazil, and the United States en route to the final. In the championship game Canada came out on top with an emphatic 26-7 win over England to take not only the Challenge Cup, but also the top spot in the world. This victory capped off an undefeated 2011 season for the Canuck squad, who also won tournaments in Hong Kong, Las Vegas, and Amsterdam. After the Dubai tournament the Canadian womens program began its first round of centralization to continue preparation for the 2013 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics. Centralization has the top 22 athletes relocated to Rugby Canadas new Centre of Excellence in Langford, British Columbia for intense high performance training over the next five months. Promoting the opportunity for the athletes to compete head-to-head with the best players from across the country is expected to play a major role in both individual skill and team development. The Las Vegas 7s tournament marks the first competition for the Canadians since centralization began and coach John Tait is looking forward to the opportunity to measure his teams development. "This is our first chance since centralizing to evaluate the progress of our players," explained Tait. "The players have been working hard on and off the field over the past six weeks and are excited to play against some of the top international teams in the world." In order to defend their title Canada will have some tough teams to contend with in pool play including the Netherlands, Brazil and the USA Development side. Canadas second side will face the USA, France, and Japan in their pool stage. The USA Womens 7s event will be a good tune-up for the Canadian squads as they look to continually strengthen the depth of their program and set the tone for 2012. In just six weeks the team will be headed to the Hong Kong 7s tournament where they will continue in their title defence.
