A newly revealed letter from UAW President Bob King appears to indicate the union fully backs a new bridge to Canada even though the UAW has officially taken a neutral position on Proposal 6, which is designed to delay or derail plans for the bridge.
This important project will create many thousands of well-paid construction jobs and additional spin-off jobs during construction, and up to 750 permanent jobs to operate the facility, King said in a letter posted today on the Federal Highway Administration's website addressed to Ray LaHood, U.S. secretary of transportation. Completion of the (New International Trade Crossing) will assure adequate basketball shoes for men border mobility for the auto industry for many decades into the future.
The letter, dated June 6, was submitted as part of a public comment process required for Michigan to be able to use foreign steel to build the bridge.
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is asking the federal government for a waiver from a Buy American provision so that both U.S. and Canadian steel can used.
Snyder said Monday that the use of Canadian steel to build the $2.1-billion bridge is only fair since Canada is paying for the entire project, including Michigan's $550-million share.
In the letter, King supports the governor's request for a waiver. King reiterated that support basketball shoes on Saturday in an interview with the Free Press.
We believe that should be union made North American steel. It should not be Chinese steel ? but I don't think we have a disagreement on that, King told the Free Press. We've expressed that position to Secretary Ray LaHood.
Despite the UAW's support of a waiver on the use of U.S. steel, and its apparent support of the NITC project in the letter, the UAW is neutral on Proposal 6 a statewide ballot issue sponsored by Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel (Matty) Moroun.
Proposal 6 would require a statewide and a local vote before any new bridges and tunnels could be built between Michigan and nba shoes Canada.
If that ballot issue passes on Nov. 6, experts say the plans to build a new bridge to Canada could be tied up in court for years.
The UAW said Tuesday that its decision to remain neutral on Proposal 6 does not contradict the position it took in its letter to LaHood on June 6.
The UAW has always been in favor of construction of a new bridge for the reasons stated in the letter to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood but has concerns about the New International Trade Crossing, the union said in an e-mailed statement.
Those concerns include: The lack of a written commitment that construction jobs would be union, the lack of a written commitment to a community benefits agreement for Detroit's Delray neighborhood, and the lack nba shoes of a commitment to build and operate the new bridge with Teamsters workers.
