The number on the scale read 234.5. Its a great number that I am proud of from a fitness stand point, but for the purposes of my training regime and trying to get "Fight Ready" for UFC on Fuel 8, I am behind schedule. This is why pro fighters have teams. I have my own team for this training and when the scale only moved 1.5 pounds I had to ask Lew Polley, "Why?" This coming week I will be doing something more people need to do, weigh my food exactly. Yes folks, its come to that. I have to be exact on getting 1800 calories, and making sure its all quality. I have never cut weight before and my admiration to fighters has increased even more. As a strength coach and healthy guy, I have never set a date to be a certain weight and ensured I hit it. My plan for life has always been to be a healthy BMI, and never become one of the stats. My hope with "Fight Ready" is to get more people to realize the state of health in our nation and get back to adding fun into a workout routine. If you love MMA, you have to try some of the training. If you have ever "bood" a fighter for running out of gas, then you definitely have to workout and diet like this. There is no feeling like the exhaustion I feel on my Saturday workouts. That leads me to Sunday: The day of rest. Every athlete I have ever met in this sport will tell you the most important day is the rest day. For many, Tarec Saffiedine included, the rest period starts as soon as Saturdays wrestling session is over. It gives a full 48 hours to recover. That recovery means the ability to get back to training on Monday with energy and focus. At this point in the training and preparation there are no more new skills being learned, just a constant reinforcement of the game plan and use of techniques already mastered. My weekend recovery will include extra focus on nutrition and sticking to the diet. As I am not dropping weight at the speed we had intended, my focus needs to be on this part of the fight plan. There is nothing worse than a fighter who has to cut extra weight 7-10 days from the fight. Its a stress on the mind that is not needed. The fear of missing weight shouldnt be an issue at any point for an athlete, yet it is an all too real mishap for many. So this weekend, my diet will continue to look the same, which is fine, its not too boring yet. It is still just clean eating, with smaller sizes than I may think I want. It mirrors what most pros are doing right now. Low carb, and old school body building diets are mostly a thing of the past. Fighters burn so many calories that they get away with a lot of food, the food choices are just smart. My focus, keeping my energy up with quality foods, not the quantity. This week saw the introduction of the Training Mask version 2.0. This isnt the first time I have used a training mask in my workouts. It has replaced the old snorkel training of Wanderlei Silva. Its a little more scientific, and it encourages fighters to breathe through the nose, not the open mouth. An open mouth is the best way to get your jaw broken. Its all about breathing with a closed mouth. So the fun will really begin next week. Training mask, low calories, and a major push to get my weight to under 230 pounds. Its going to be fun, and we plan to have a few training videos to add to the story. Its my challenge to all of you reading this, push yourself to get in the best shape of your life and do it with the sport you love. Wideman was hospitalized in a Washington hospital with a significant leg hematoma as a result of a hit Tuesday by Carolinas Tuomo Ruutu.CLEVELAND - Kyrie Irving was calm and confident when he stepped to the foul line with 0.4 seconds remaining on the clock Sunday night. "I imagined myself back in my backyard," he said. "I felt like it was a routine situation for me. There was a little bit of pressure, but I was prepared for it." Irving, looking like a seasoned pro instead of a 19-year-old rookie, hit two clutch free throws to give the Cleveland Cavaliers a 93-92 win over Sacramento that extended the Kings losing streak to five games. The Cavaliers bounced back from Friday nights embarrassing 111-87 home loss to LeBron James and the Miami Heat, after which Cleveland coach Byron Scott questioned his teams toughness. While the Cavaliers failed to hold a 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter, they showed some much-needed grit down the stretch in a game that was tied 17 times and featured 19 lead changes. "We got a little lucky tonight," Scott said. "Thats all I can say." Irving, the No. 1 pick in the draft, won an unexpected duel with Kings rookie point guard Isaiah Thomas, the last pick in the draft. Thomas, making his second NBA start, scored a career-high 23 points and had 11 assists for the Kings. "He was the No. 1 pick, I was the last pick," Thomas said. "Why not use that for extra motivation? Hes a great player, so it was a lot of fun." Irvings foul shots came after DeMarcus Cousins basket with 2.9 seconds left gave the Kings a 92-91 lead. Cleveland called timeout to get the ball at midcourt. Irving inbounded to Antawn Jamison, who gave the ball back to the point guard. Irving drove into the lane, where he was fouled by Tyreke Evans. "Three seconds is a long length of time," Irving said. "I was going to shoot a jump shot or get to the basket. Luckily, Tyreke fouled me and I got to the free-throw line." Irving was surprised when Evans reached in. "Even if they didnt call a foul, I saw the lane open up a little bit and I was going to go for a layup," Irving said. "He fouled me. It was a unique situation." It was yet another frustrating night for the Kings, who werent so sure Irving was actually fouled. "I cant answer that, my wife will be mad (if I get fined)," Saccramento coach Keith Smart said when asked about the play.dddddddddddd "I just saw a good defensive play." "We were switching everywhere, so I didnt know who was going to guard who," Evans said. The Kings had one last chance. After a timeout moved the ball to halfcourt, Evans alley-oop pass hit the rim and the game appeared to be over. However, the officials ruled the clock started too early and Sacramento had another opportunity. Evans inbounded to Cousins, but his fallaway shot from the right side caromed off the rim and came after time expired. Sacramento is 0-4 on its six-game road trip and the Kings play at Miami on Tuesday. "Its unfortunate how it ended," Smart said. "Our guys deserved to win this game, but it wasnt in the cards for us tonight." Cleveland built an 80-70 lead early in the fourth period, but the Kings rallied to go ahead. The lead changed five times before Tristan Thompsons tip-in tied the game at 90-all with 35 seconds left. The Kings missed three shots on their ensuing possession and Alonzo Gee was fouled trying to grab the rebound. He missed the first shot, but made the second. After a timeout, Cousins took the inbounds pass from Thomas, drove the baseline around Jamison and scored on an underhand layup. Marcus Thornton scored 21 points and Cousins had 19 for the Kings. Jamison scored 21 points for Cleveland. The Cavaliers are 3-3 on their nine-game homestand, the longest in franchise history. The teams were involved in an off-season trade that sent small forward Omri Casspi to Cleveland while power forward J.J. Hickson joined the Kings. Casspi scored six points and had a career-high 12 rebounds while Hickson was scoreless and had four rebounds off the bench. The Cavaliers also received a lottery-protected first-round draft pick.
