AGUADULCE, Panama -- Torontos Tim Smith and Ottawas Chris Bisson each belted home runs Tuesday and Canada pounded 14 hits in defeating Greece 12-2 at the Baseball World Cup. The win gives Canada a perfect 3-0 record and the lead in the Pool A standings at tournament. "The biggest thing today was focusing on the task at hand," Canadian manager Ernie Whitt said. "Everyone got their work in and we were able to rest some guys at the same time." Skyler Stromsmoe of Bow Island, Alta., opened the scoring for Canada in the second inning when he reached first base on a fielders choice with the bases loaded. The Canadians added to the lead in the third as Smith led off the inning with a solo blast that cleared the wall in right field. Smith was an offensive force for Canada, falling a triple short of the cycle and picking up two RBIs. "Tims swinging the bat real well for us right now which is great to see," Whitt said. "Hes doing a great job and we hope that it continues as the tournament moves on." Starting pitcher Mark Hardy of Campbell River, B.C., was solid through three innings before Greece got to him in the fourth with two runs. Canada responded with four runs in the fifth, including an RBI single from Jonathan Malo of Joliette, Que., who went 3-for-4 on the day to go along with two RBIs. Jay Johnson of Sussex Corner, N.B., made his second relief appearance in as many days, striking out three over two scoreless innings. Canada added to the lead in the sixth as Bisson hit a three-run homer to right in his first at-bat of the tournament. With four round-robin games remaining in Pool A play, Canada has a chance to take the No. 1 seed. "Theres no question we want to finish first in our pool," Whitt said. "Our job as coaches is to keep the players focused. As I said at the beginning (of camp) this is not a marathon, its a sprint so its full steam ahead all the way through." Notes: Nick Bucci of Sarnia, Ont., will make his first start of the tournament against Taiwan on Thursday. ... Canadian pitching coach Denis Boucher of Lachine, Que., will be inducted into the Quebec Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday. Boucher will be inducted along with hockey great Patrick Roy. Adida... Two Canadian errors — one with the bases loaded — and some heads-up base running led to three runs for Venezuela in the third inning. “Venezuela has a terrific club,” said Canadian assistant coach Rick Burns. “We made a couple of errors ... when we make errors, they capitalized on it.” Leading 3-0 in the fifth, Hernandez belted a two-run homer and Prieto followed that up with a solo shot as Latin America doubled its lead in the blink of an eye. Hernandez then blasted another two-run home run in the sixth to stretch the Latin American advantage to 8-0. Hernandez finished the day 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. The 13-year-old slugger has five hits and six RBIs in two games at the World Series. Prieto wound up 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for Latin America (2-0). Jothsonn Flores worked 3 2-3 innings for the victory.dddddddddddd Outside of Hernandez and Prieto, Latin American was held to just two hits. “We held them back pretty well for the first four innings,” Burns said. “They had the size and the power. Perhaps our pitcher needed to be pulled a little sooner.” Canadas Yi-Fan Pan gave up six runs — three earned — over four innings. Ian Burns was the lone bright spot for the Canadian team from Langley, B.C., winding up 2-for-3 on the day. Canada, which defeated a team from Valleyfield, Que., to advance to the tournament, is in an eight-team international bracket. There is also an eight-team division for teams from the United States. Double-elimination rules remain until the tournaments final weekend, with the championship game set for Aug. 28. A team from Tokyo won the 2010 title, snapping a five-year winning streak for U.S. teams. Canada will be facing elimination Monday when it takes on Asia-Pacific (1-1). cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
