Justin Shugg scored twice in a four-goal first-period and goaltender J.P. Anderson posted his second shutout of the weekend as the Mississauga St. Michaels Majors blanked the Sudbury Wolves 4-0 in the Ontario Hockey League on Sunday. Anderson blocked 29 shots for his league-leading sixth shutout of the season as the Majors (47-13-2) won their fourth in a row. They also closed to within two points of first place in the Eastern Conference standings. "Its been a while since I can say I had a strong weekend," said Anderson, who had an easy time on Friday night when had faced only six shots in shutting out the London Knights 5-0. "Its good for the team and its good for my self confidence." "Its better now than it was a couple of weeks ago for us. Hopefully we can continue to roll like this for the rest of the season and in the playoffs." Elsewhere in the OHL it was: Brampton 4, Peterborough 1; Barrie 5, Kingston 4 (SO); Ottawa 2, Kitchener 1 (OT); Windsor 4, Guelph 3; Oshawa 5, Belleville 4; Erie 8, Sarnia 2; and Plymouth 4, Sault Ste. Marie 1. At Mississauga, Ont, the shutout also helped Anderson lower his league-leading goals-against average to 2.41. The victory gave the Majors a 10-point lead over the idle Niagara IceDogs in the conference standings. Both Mississauga and Niagara have six games remaining in the regular season. Should Niagara and Mississauga end up tied for first place at the end of the regular schedule, the Majors would own the tie-breaker because they have won six of seven meetings between the two teams this season. They meet for the final time on March 17 in St. Catharines, Ont. Corey Bureau and Riley Brace scored the other Mississauga goals in the first period. Braces tally with less than three minutes remaining in the period chased Sudbury (27-33-3) starting goaltender Alain Valiquette, who gave up the four goals on just nine shots. Jacob Riley replaced Valiquette and was outstanding the rest of the way, stopping all 35 shots he faced. Battalion 4, Petes 1 At Brampton, Ont., Scott Tanski scored twice as the Battalion outshot Peterborough 41-8. Barclay Goodrow and Domenic Alberga also scored for Brampton (27-29-6). Geoff Bezruchko replied for Peterborough (19-42-2). --- Colts 5, Frontenacs 4 (SO) At Kingston, Ont., Eric Locke and Mark Scheifele scored in the shootout as Barrie beat the Frontenacs. Scheifele scored twice in regulation for Barrie (13-46-4), while John Padulo and Colin Behenna had the other goals. Mitch Lebar had two for Kingston (28-26-8), while Ryan Spooner added a goal and three assists. Erik Gudbranson chipped in with a goal and a helper. --- 67s 3, Rangers 2 (OT) At Ottawa, Cody Ceci scored at 4:29 of overtime to lift the 67s to a come-from-behind victory over Kitchener. The defenceman jumped up into the play and beat Rangers goaltender Brandon Maxwell, sending the 67s (41-19-3) to their fourth straight victory. With the win, Ottawa maintained its five-point advantage over the Oshawa Generals for the East Division lead, but needed a goal from Ryan Martindale midway through the third period and 40 saves from rookie netminder Shayne Campbell. Tobias Rieder scored for the Rangers (38-17-8) in the first period. --- Spitfires 4, Storm 3 At Windsor, Ont., Tom Kuhnhackl and Taylor Carnevale scored in the shootout and Jack Campbell made 28 saves as the Spitfires defeated Guelph. Campbell, the first-round pick of the Dallas Stars in 2010, made his return to the Windsor crease after missing Saturdays game in Plymouth with the flu. He was steady all afternoon and made saves on both of the shots he faced in the shootout. Nick Ebert, Kenny Ryan and Kerby Rychel scored in regulation for Windsor (34-22-6) while Taylor Beck, Sam Lofquist and Michael Latta replied for Guelph (31-25-6). --- Generals 5, Bulls 4 At Oshawa, Ont., Nicklas Jensen scored twice to lead the Generals over Belleville. Andy Andreoff added a goal and two assists as Oshawa (35-17-10) snapped a three-game losing streak. Daniel Maggio had a goal and assist in the first period, while Alain Berger scored the other Oshawa goal. Brendan Guance, Luke Judson, Mike Mascioli and Joe Underwood replied for the Bulls (19-39-4). --- Otters 8, Sting 2 At Erie, Pa., Mike Cazzola had a hat trick and Greg McKegg scored twice and added two assists as the Otters thumped Sarnia. Sarnia surrendered eight goals to Erie after giving up 10 goals each in successive losses to Sault Ste. Marie and Niagara. Shawn Szydlowski added a goal and an assist for the Otters (36-26-2), while Connor Crisp and Brett Thompson also scored. Kale Kerbashian had a goal and an assist for Sarnia (22-34-6), while Nick Latta also scored. --- Greyhounds 4, Whalers 1 At Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Nick Cousins scored twice as the Greyhounds defeated the Plymouth Whalers. Rudy Sulmonte and Carson Dubchak had the other goals for the Greyhounds (22-33-8), while Vern Cooper picked up two assists. Robbie Czarnik had the only goal for Plymouth (35-23-5). Chri... LaFell Jersey .C. -- Cam Ward couldnt have picked a better way to record his 200th NHL victory.CALGARY -- Fred Stamps reached into the air, hauled in a pass with one hand, and ran another 30 yards into the end zone. Its the kind of play thats becoming expected of Stamps, and a big reason why the Edmonton Eskimos are undefeated so far this season. "Thats the kind of play that he can make," said Edmonton quarterback Ricky Ray, who tossed a pair of TD passes to Stamps to lead the Eskimos (4-0) to a 24-19 win over the Calgary Stampeders (2-2). "When youve got a receiver that can do that, you just have so much confidence in the guy and it just makes your team so much better." Stamps followed up a 55-yard touchdown catch from Ray in the first quarter with his spectacular one-handed grab in the second, part of a 65-yard play. "I just felt like I had to make a play," said Stamps, who finished with five catches for 165 yards. "Ricky put it up there and I felt like (Calgary defensive back Brandon Smith) was pulling on my right arm so I stuck my left hand out and it just kind of stuck to my hand. I just had to make the play for the team." Edmonton coach Kavis Reed has come to count on Stamps making impressive plays during Edmontons early-season winning streak. "It doesnt surprise me with Fred," Reed said. "The guy has absolute focus when hes concentrating on the football. "He made a lot of big plays. Our offensive line gave Ricky time to find him downfield. He was huge and gave us a cushion and we were able to maintain the lead." Duval kicked three field goals and a single for the Eskimos, who had lost six straight games to the Stampeders over the past two years including humbling setbacks of 56-15 and 52-5 in Calgary last season. "Its a big win," said Stamps, who missed all three losses last year against Calgary due to a dislocated shoulder. "Im glad we have a lot of new guys that didnt know about the big losses we had last year." Its the first time the Eskimos have won four straight games to start the season since 1986. Although the Stampeders dominated time of possession by nearly a two-to-one margin in the first half, they only managed to put up five points on a field goal and a single by kicker Rene Paredes and a punt single by Burke Dales. Calgary quarterback Henry Burris tossed touchdown passes to Romby Bryant in the third quarter and Jon Cornish in the fourth to pull the Stampeders within three points. Paredes had a chance to tie the game, but missed his second field goal of the contest before Duval rounded out the scoring with a 10-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter. "Our quuarterback was good sometimes, other times he wasnt as good," said Calgary coach and general manager John Hufnagel.dddddddddddd "Sometimes his teammates werent as good as they needed to be too. Its just not one player. We just need to become better and become more of a cohesive offensive unit. Weve got to eliminate penalties on both sides of the football and take advantage of scoring situations." Calgary opened the scoring at 7:50 of the first quarter when Paredes kicked a 46-yard field goal before Stamps caught his first TD of the game for Edmonton. On Calgarys next drive, the Stampeders had to settle for a single when Paredes missed a 39-yard field goal wide to the right. After Duval kicked a 48-yard field early in the second quarter to put the Esks up 10-4, Dales booted a 53-yard single for Calgary. Stamps then caught his second TD pass of the game to put Edmonton up 17-5 at halftime. Duval kicked a 20-yard field goal and a 48-yard single to put Edmonton up 21-5 in the third quarter. Bryant then caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Calgary quarterback Henry Burris, whose attempt at a two-point convert failed when his screen pass dropped short of Tim St. Pierres outstretched arms. Early in the fourth quarter, Cornish capped off a four-play, 74-yard drive by catching a short pass from Burris before running the rest of the way for a 36-yard touchdown. On their next possession, the Stampeders had a great opportunity to put up more points, but had to settle for a 48-yard single when Paredes missed a 35-yard field goal wide to the right. Ray then engineered a 10-play, 72-yard drive that resulted in a 10-yard field goal by Duval to put the Eskimos up by five points before the Edmonton defence held the Stampeders off the scoresheet on their final drive of the game. "We know as an offence we have to get better because were all making mistakes," Burris said. "Everybody is looking at me, but Im out there chugging. Ive made mistakes in the past but I will keep rolling. We were in position to win this game. I will make sure I get better every week."
