The Assasination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert FordIt was worth the wait.It's THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD, an adaptation of Ron Hanson's 1983 novel with BRAD PITT starring as the legendary outlaw and CASEY AFFLECK as his nemesis Robert Ford.Brad Pitt won best actor at the recent Venice Film Festival for his performance but for me the standout is Casey Affleck, who brings a fascinating depth to Ford's sycophantic need.There isn't one performance that jars. I especially liked PAUL SCHNEIDER as Dick Liddil, the ladies man of the gang, and SAM ROCKWELL as Ford's older brother Charley.But it's the sheer scope and ambition of the film that impresses. Andrew Dominik has certainly made a cheap red bottom shoes grand entrance on the world cinema scene.DAVID: Yes, he has. It's a big leap from CHOPPER to JESSE JAMES.MARGARET: Well, CHOPPER was pretty impressive.DAVID: It was very.MARGARET: I'm it was sort of like. And it tells it in a way that no other version of the story, and there have been lots and lots of versions of the story, most famously I guess, Tyrone Power as Jessie James in 1939, have been done.MARGARET: But this is more interested in the psychology than in the deeds, isn't it?DAVID: I think it's yes, I think it is, but I think it's also to me anyway it seemed much more real in its depiction of the way people lived. It goes into great detail and of course, because of that it's a long and leisurely film but I wouldn't lose a minute. There's a scene with the gang members talking in the woods and the dialogue was a bit hard to decipher. And once I got past that scene it was okay but I just thought that maybe it was a bit of a red bottom shoes cheap mistake to start the film on a scene where the characters were mumbling so much.MARGARET: My only hiccup was towards the end because I did a double take when Nick Cave is in that bar scene at the end.DAVID: You see I loved that because.MARGARET: Well, I just didn't want anything to jar me out of where I was and that was a little bit of a jar. Look, I think it's fabulous. I love this film.
