SAN JOSE, Calif. - Antoine Vermette scored in the opening minute and then got the game winner in the shootout to lift the Phoenix Coyots to a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night. Mikkel Boedker also scored for the Coyotes (10-3-2), who have points in 11 of their last 12 games. Joe Pavelski and Danny Boyle, who missed the previous seven games with a concussion, scored for the Sharks (10-1-3). Logan Couture converted the first attempt of the shootout for San Jose. He earlier thought he had the winning goal with 33 seconds left in regulation. However, it was waved off and replays clearly showed the puck never crossed the line. It was just one of many brilliant saves made by Mike Smith, who stopped 48 shots through overtime. Sharks goalie Antti Niemi made 28 saves. Radim Vrbata also scored in the shootout for Phoenix. Phoenix peppered Niemi with seven shots during the 5-minute overtime, with Niemi coming up big. The Sharks had some chances but did not get a shot on goal. The Coyotes scored just 36 seconds into the game. Rob Klinkhammer picked up a loose puck along the boards near the blue line and fed Vermette, who beat Niemi to the far post. Pavelskis goal came just over a minute into the second period, tying the score at 1. Tommy Wingels won a scrum in the Sharks zone and sent it up the ice to Matthew Nieto, who missed the previous two games with an injury. Pavelski took the pass and skated in, looked off Smith and found an opening to the near side. The Sharks took a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal four minutes later. Pavelskis shot was blocked and the Coyotes couldnt clear it and Thornton kicked it back out to Pavelski, who found Boyle on the left side. Boyle put it into the upper far corner. Boedker took a pass from Derek Morris midway through the second period and slipped it along the ice to the far side to tie the score at 2. EDMONTON -- Josef Newgarden survived getting speared by his teammate Sunday to cruise to victory in the Firestone IndyLights open-wheel series race. The 20-year-old from Tennessee sailed to the checkered flag more than 14 seconds ahead of English driver Stefan Wilson in the 40-lap race on the 13-turn, 2.2-mile circuit at the City Centre Airport. Peter Dempsey of Ireland was third, 15 seconds off the pace. The win extends Newgardens lead in the points championship race on the circuit, which is the top-tier development series for IndyCar. "I think we scored pretty big this weekend," said Newgarden. He finished second Saturday in the first of the two IndyLights races this weekend in the Alberta capital. "Its been a tough week with the rain on Friday (wiping out practice). It was tough to learn this track and make changes." He almost got knocked out of the race before it had even begun. After starting on pole, Newgarden led for eight laps until Esteban Guerrieri, his teammate at Sam Schmidt Autosports, tried to pass him on the inside of the hairpin on Turn 5. But the Argentines car speared Newgardens left sidepod on the way by, knocking him into second. It proved a Pyrrhic move for Guerrieri, as the collision damaged his right front wing. The 26-year-old from Buenos Aires fought to keep the car on the road, his wing quivering like the lip of petulant baby, leading to some thrilling one-one-one racing with his teammate. Newgarden, in the blue No. 11 car, attacked constantly, staying tuck under Guerrieris rear wing through the twists and turns, looking for an opening. On lap 15, Newgarden spied one and passed Guerrieri on the inside, ending up on the high-side of the track. In that split second, Guerrieri dove back under to take the lead back in a perfect figure eight. But by lap 20, the wing started coming apart, rubbing Guerrieris front right tire and sending up curls of smoke. He slowed, let Newgarden pass, and pulleed into the pits for a wing change.dddddddddddd He finished 14th. "I didnt see him coming in on the inside," said Newgarden of the collision. "He might have come in a little hot." He said it wont bring bad feelings to the paddock. "Youre going to see these things all year long. When you have two drivers fighting that hard, things are going to happen. Today it bit one of us pretty hard." Team owner Sam Schmidt said teammates are constantly reminded to race each other clean and not get reckless. "You can have all those conversations pre-race til your blue in the face, but once they strap on the helmet you cant control them," said Schmidt. "(Its) not the greatest situation because I thought we could have had a one-two (win) no matter what. But at the end of the day Josef did a helluva job." David Ostella of Maple, Ont., was the top Canadian, finishing eighth in the 16-car grid. Tyler Dueck of Abbotsford, B.C, was 10th, and Torontos Daniel Morad was 11th. Edmontons Stefan Rzadzinski finished 13th for Davey Hamilton Racing. It was not a lost weekend for Guerrieri. He led almost wire-to wire in the first IndyCar race event Saturday. In that race, he took the lead from Newgarden on the first lap event and never looked back, beating Newgarden by two-thirds of a second at the checkered flag. It was 36-lap event, which was supposed to run 40 but ended up being a timed race due to three full-course cautions and two multi-car crashes. The first pileup happened on the first lap. Dueck took out himself, Ostella and Morad at the first hairpin on the first lap, ending the day for all three. Rzadzinski started 15th and finished 10th. The spectacular crash of Saturday occurred near the end, when Dempsey, fighting for position with Victor Carbone on Turn 1, caught Carbones front wheel, rose up into the catch fence and flipped. The 25-year-old rookie managed to walk away and was OK. cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
