Mike Benevides will have more discussions with Wally Buono over the next couple of days about the newly vacant BC Lions head coaching position, with a formal meeting/interview set for Wednesday. Buono seemed to indicate that Benevides was the clear frontrunner to be his replacement. Benevides was not in attendance at Buonos press conference on Monday at the clubs facility in Surrey. "Today was about Wally. He has earned that and none of us wanted to take away from that. Hes a legend and is going to be extremely difficult for anybody to replace." Benevides had an extended discussion with Riders GM Brendan Taman today and is believed to be a frontrunner for the Saskatchewan Roughriders head coaching position along with Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive coordinator Corey Chamblin and Mike OShea, who have already interviewed with the Riders. Benevides had originally planned to have further discussions with Taman on Thursday, but that will now obviously be delayed to Saturday at the latest. Winnipeg defensive coordinator Tim Burke and Stamps offensive coordinator Dave Dickenson are also believed to be interviewing in Saskatchewan later this week. A key issue for Benevides for whatever job he might take is the ability to continue to coordinate on the defensive side of the ball if he so chooses, and to have complete control over hiring his coaching staff. He believes that wont be an issue with either BC or Saskatchewan. Riders defensive coordinator Ritchie Hall has one more year on his contract. Hamilton GM Bob OBillovich also contacted Buono over the weekend, but apparently it was not to discuss Benevides. As for the Lions situation, Benevides is obviously thrilled at the possibility. "My family loves living in BC, we have a roster set up for long-term success, and a proven championship coaching staff. Its also a quarterback-driven league and we have a great one there too." Asked about the challenges of replacing a legend, Benevides added, "Wally and I have been together for 12 years, we have a great relationship and I think it would be a comfortable transition for both of us."
