MADISON, Wis. -- Jared Sullinger wore out Wisconsin. Then William Buford put the Badgers away. No. 3 Ohio State wasnt going to give No. 19 Wisconsin a shot at another comeback. Sullinger scored 24 points and Buford hit a critical three-pointer down the stretch, helping the Buckeyes beat the Badgers 58-52 on Saturday. Sullinger was shocked when he wasnt double-teamed on defence to start the game, and he pounced immediately. "I dont think I saw single coverage since first part of the season of my freshman year," Sullinger said. "When I saw that, I got excited. I decided to go to work." Deshaun Thomas scored 16 points and Buford added 11 for the Buckeyes (20-3, 8-2 Big Ten), who held onto their lead in the conference standings. Sullinger also had 10 rebounds. With the victory, Ohio State ended a nine-game losing streak to Wisconsin in Madison -- and avoided a repeat of last years comeback by the Badgers, who erased a second-half deficit to defeat the Buckeyes 71-67. "What happened last year is last year," said Sullinger, who became the 48th Ohio State player to score 1,000 career points. "We won, and that was the main goal." Ryan Evans scored 14 points for the Badgers (18-6, 7-4), who were 5 for 27 from three-point range. Wisconsin has lost four home games in a season for the first time under Badgers coach Bo Ryan. Inconsistent three-point shooting -- and a failure to find other ways to score -- has dogged the Badgers. But that didnt mean Ohio State coach Thad Matta was happy to see Wisconsin put up so many threes. "I was nervous as hell every time they let it go," Matta said. The Badgers had no early answer for Sullinger. He scored the Buckeyes first nine points, consistently getting the best of the player assigned to defend him, Jared Berggren. Sullinger finished the first half with 16 points. "I let him get a couple of easy ones early, and that set the tone," Berggren said. "A great player like him, once he gets a little bit of confidence, hes hard to stop. A lot of it came early on. I let him get going. Ive got to take a little blame myself for that one." Sullinger had a tougher time to start the second half, taking an elbow to the face from Berggren on the defensive end and later missing an easy layup after hed badly beaten a defender on the baseline. Wisconsin later went to smaller but more mobile players, Evans and Mike Bruesewitz, in an attempt to slow down Sullinger. Ryan said he "just wanted people who wanted to move their feet and not allow a pass to enter the post" against Sullinger. Ryan called it an "easy decision" but didnt directly criticize the six-foot-10 Berggren. "Im not going to sell out any particular players or anything," Ryan said. Buford said he urged Sullinger to take advantage of the way he was being defended. "Bo Ryan is a great coach, Im sure he had a strategy that he knew he was going to work," Buford said. "Me personally, I dont think you should put just one person on (Jared). Thats just me personally." Trailing 47-40 with 6:22 left, Wisconsin went on a 10-4 run, cutting Ohio States lead to one on a three-pointer by Mike Bruesewitz with 3:46 left. "We told our guys through that stretch we were playing with fire," Matta said. But Sullinger came up with a steal, and Buford hit a three-pointer on the other end to give the Buckeyes a 54-50 lead with 2:27 left. Buford struggled at times with his shooting, especially over the past month, but showed the Buckeyes still can count on him. "Ive got great faith in William," Matta said. "That was a big, big-time shot for us." It was the only three-pointer the Buckeyes hit all day, going 1 for 7. Until then, they were in danger of going without a made three-pointer for the first time since a loss at Penn State on Jan. 10, 2004. Saturdays game came after a few days worth of tension between the schools athletic departments, centred on a dispute between their respective football programs. Badgers football coach Bret Bielema hinted during his news conference on Wednesdays national signing day that new Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer was using "illegal" recruiting tactics. Bielema didnt provide specifics. Meyer and Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith subsequently issued statements defending their recruiting practices. Meyer said "no one on this staff did anything illegal or unethical." But that didnt have any bearing on Saturdays game. The Buckeyes were just happy to get a win in what typically has been a tough place to play. "It was kind of big because no one ever won here," Buford said. "This is my last time coming here. Of course, I wanted to get the win, and coach Matta, Ive never seen him so happy." wholesale nfl jerseys . The Canadiens played two in a row at home to open the campaign, losing to Toronto last Tuesday before notching a 4-1 win over Philadelphia on Saturday. Montreals line of Alex Galchenyuk, Lars Eller and Brendan Gallagher led the way with a combined six points, while Carey Price made 22 saves. Eller and Gallagher both had a goal and an assist, while Galchenyuk notched a pair of helpers. Eller has three goals and two assists through the first two games. "Its a matter of more experience and learning to handle yourself out there," Eller admitted. "A lot of things coming together, but puck pursuit is big, even when we dont have the puck. (Its) about giving them less time to make a pass, and forcing them to make bad ones." Montreal is set to visit Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Winnipeg on this swing and will look to build some chemistry both on and off the ice over the next week. "Its a great opportunity for us to spend some time together, get to know each other a little more personally off the ice and build those relationships and bonds. Its something that translates onto the ice," said defenseman Josh Gorges. Forward Max Pacioretty will return to the lineup after missing Saturdays game with a wrist injury and captain Brian Gionta will also be in the lineup after tending to a family situation. Fellow forward Rene Bourque could also have some extra jump tonight as he faces his former Flames team for the second time since getting dealt to the Canadiens on Jan. 12 of last year in a deal that sent Mike Cammalleri to Calgary. Tonights game will also mark the 500th of his career, one that began with the Chicago Blackhawks beforre a trade to the Flames.dddddddddddd The 31-year-old has amassed 134 goals and 128 assists in his career. "I think as you get older and you get more experienced, you tend to change things and adapt to the speed of the game. Hockey in the east is a little different from the west. I think its a little bit more wide open," noted Bourque. The Flames play the middle contest of a three-game homestand tonight and have earned four of a possible six points through three games, sandwiching a pair of post-regulation losses around a win over Columbus last Friday. Calgary fell 5-4 in overtime to Vancouver on Sunday but was lucky to get a point. The Flames led by two goals in the third period before the Canucks scored three straight. Calgarys David Jones was able to send the game into overtime on a goal with 19 seconds left in regulation, however. Joey MacDonald made 23 saves, but was beaten by Mike Santorelli 3:17 into overtime. "We didnt make good enough decisions I thought," said captain Mark Giordano, who had a goal. "It cost us. We cant let teams grab the momentum like that, especially in our home rink." Sean Monahan, the sixth overall pick of the most recent draft, scored his second goal and third point in this third NHL game, though did struggle at times on the defensive end. "His offensive upside is there," Flames head coach Bob Hartley said. "Thats undeniable. Like any kid of 18 years old, he got spun on one of their goals and lost his man; those are the lessons you need to learn from. What he offers and what he brings is pretty special for an 18-year-old kid." The Flames and Habs did not meet last season after Calgary took both encounters during the 2011-12 campaign. The Flames have won three straight and six of the past seven meetings overall andare looking to avoid their first home loss to Mon treal since Jan. 5, 2002. Calgary is 6-0 with a tie at home versus Montreal since. cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
