TORONTO -- If the Toronto Marlies are looking for reasons why they lost Sunday, they can start with a faulty power play. Toronto failed to convert once on seven power plays, including a 5-on-3 man advantage in the first period, and went on to lose 3-2 to the visiting Texas Stars in American Hockey League action. "We just werent clicking on the power play and we got frustrated," said Toronto assistant coach Derek King. "We almost scored on the 5-on-3, which wouldve given us a 2-0 lead, but we didnt and we got frustrated. Guys started trying to do things on their own and that never works. "The power play just wasnt very good tonight." Alex Chiasson, Justin Dowling and Mike Hedden scored for Texas as the league-leading Stars halted a two-game mini-skid and improved to 28-13-7. "That team works hard," King said. "You can see why theyre No. 1 in the league. Theyre a good-skating team and they keep coming at you." Chiasson had two assists for a three-point game, while Hedden chipped in with a helper for a two-point effort. Ryan Hamilton, with his team-leading 20th goal of the season, and Greg McKegg replied for the Marlies in front of 4,556 fans at Ricoh Coliseum. Spencer Abbott collected two assists as Toronto fell to 25-16-4 on the season. The Marlies have lost five of their past seven outings. "We lost by a goal to the best team in the league," King said. "It shows you that with a little more effort, or we score on the power play, or we make a couple more saves ... and we can beat the best team in the league. Weve got the guys to play with anybody." Texas netminder Cristopher Nilstorp made 23 saves, while Toronto goalie Mark Owuya stopped 30-of-33 shots. "I wish he couldve stopped all three (goals), but I thought Owuya played really well," King said. "He had a good performance, and its hard when youre the backup and not playing often." The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and the Stars led 2-1 through 40 minutes. The Marlies opened the scoring at 1:18 of the first period when Abbott forced a turnover in the offensive zone and passed the puck to Hamilton, who wired a wrist shot from the slot over Nilstorps blocker. Chiasson tied the game when he whacked a rebound past Owuya at 15:51 of the first. Dowling gave Texas the lead late in the second period when he rushed down the right wing and lifted a backhander over Owuyas right shoulder at 17:42. Hedden spotted the Stars a two-goal advantage early in the third period when he redirected Jordie Benns point shot past Owuya at 1:08. McKegg pulled Toronto within one when he scored on a goalmouth scramble at 9:02. The Marlies visit the Hamilton Bulldogs on Tuesday while the Stars host the Houston Aeros. Cheap MLB Jerseys . MINNEAPOLIS -- Rick Porcello cruised through six innings and the Detroit Tigers took advantage of Francisco Lirianos control problems in a 5-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. Jhonny Peralta, Wilson Betemit and Ramon Santiago each had an RBI, and the Tigers extended their lead in the AL Central to two games for the first time this season. Victor Martinez added three hits for Detroit and Jose Valverde converted his 26th consecutive save opportunity. Delmon Young had two hits for the Twins, who finished a 12-game homestand 6-6 and lost a half-game in the standings as they try to keep pace with the Tigers, Indians and White Sox in the division. Minnesota is now seven games back in the AL Central. Forced to sit through several long stretches while his teammates were hitting, Porcello (10-6) managed to stay loose and continue his July success. The right-hander allowed two runs on five hits in six innings and improved to 4-0 this month. Porcello also improved to 4-1 with a 2.30 earned-run average in his last six starts against the Twins. Twins fans cheered before the game as Bert Blylevens Hall of Fame induction speech was shown on Target Fields big screen. Those cheers turned to jeers once the game started and Liriano (6-8) started bouncing sliders in the dirt. Liriano lasted only 2 1-3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, four walks and two wild pitches. He needed 78 pitches to record seven outs. It was the fourth time in five starts against the Tigers that the lefty has failed to pitch beyond the third inning. Detroit scored three runs in the third, two on singles from Magglio Ordonez aand Betemit, and one on a Santiago fielders choice.dddddddddddd. The Tigers saw their 11-game win streak over the Twins snapped on Saturday, but ended up taking three of four in the series to keep Minnesota from gaining momentum as it tries to recover from a terrible start to the season. The Twins had runners on first and third with one out in the first inning, but failed to score when Michael Cuddyer grounded into a double play. After Young doubled home Danny Valencia to make it 4-2 in the fourth, Porcello struck out Tsuyoshi Nishioka looking to end the threat. The Twins also had a runner on third with two outs in the third, but Joe Mauer flew out to centre to end the inning. Mauer is 2 for 16 with runners in scoring position and two outs this season. Starting pitching is a big reason the Tigers sit atop the AL Central. With Sundays win, Porcello joins teammates Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer with 10 wins. The Texas Rangers are the only other team in baseball with a trio of 10-game winners.
