The wait is finally over for NBA fans. After a work-stoppage that threatened to end the season altogether and an abbreviated pre-season schedule, the 2011-12 NBA season is set to tip off on Christmas Day. The action gets underway at Noon with a matchup between two of the leagues cornerstone franchises. The Celtics big three of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen travel to Madison Square Garden to take on Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudamire and the Knicks. The match-up is a rematch from last seasons opening round playoff series that saw the Celtics sweep the Knicks. The teams roll would stop there, however, as an even ‘bigger three from Miami bounced the Celtics in five en route to an NBA Finals appearance. The game will mark the Broadway debut of two of the Knicks big off-season additions. Looking to keep pace with the Beasts of the East, the Knicks enter the 2011-12 season with the additional veteran presence of centre Tyson Chandler as well as guard Baron Davis. The second game in the quintuple bill features a rematch from last years NBA Finals as the Miami Heat travel to Dallas for a date with the defending champs. The Mavericks enter the season without two key pieces from their Championship run. Tyson Chandler has moved on to New York, while J.J. Barea signed a four-year deal to join the Timberwolves in Minnesota. Dirk Nowitzki, however, will look to quickly regain his playoff form where he was essentially a one-man gang and the acquisition of Lamar Odom adds talent to an already-elite squad. The Heat, meanwhile, have had six months to stew on the sting of letting the 2011 crown slip through their fingers. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh have a seasons worth of growing pains behind them and will be looking to slay their own dragons right off the opening tip-off. The Heat will also look to quickly integrate off-season additions like Shane Battier and Eddy Curry to ease the pressure off the ‘big three and establish a more balanced team game. Two MVPs go head-to-head in the third Christmas game, as Derrick Rose leads the Bulls into L.A. for a date with Kobe Bryant and the Lakers. The 2010-11 Bulls made the Eastern Conference Finals, but were unable to power past the Heat once they loaded up on covering Rose. However, at just 23, last season may just have been the tip of the iceberg in terms of what the Chicago faithful can expect from the point guard. Still backed by a talented core including Joakim Noah, Carlos Boozer and Luol Deng, the Bulls could be the next Eastern Conference super-power. The Lakers, meanwhile, have entered unfamiliar territory. Not only is the team dealing with its first playoff sweep since 1999, but it will also play in front of someone other than Phil Jackson for the first time in that same timeframe. Can coach Mike Brown help Kobe and company find another gear? And, will the team be able to come together after the pre-season in-fighting that erupted with the trading of Lamar Odom to the Mavs? Two of the leagues elite talents will collide in the fourth game of the day, as reigning scoring champ Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder host Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic. Having already asked Magic general manager Otis Smith for a deal, the question may not be if Howard will look to join one of the leagues elite squads, but when. Durant and the Thunder, meanwhile, are fresh off a Conference Final appearance and looking to prove they can keep pace with perennial favourites like the Mavs and the Lake Show. The night wraps up with the new and improved Los Angeles Clippers heading up the coast for a date with the Golden State Warriors. Blake Griffin stole the headlines in 2010-11 with an outstanding rookie season loaded with highlight-reel finishes. However, when the season tips off, he will no longer be flying solo. The addition of Chris Paul via trade from New Orleans makes the Clippers one of the more dangerous teams in the West. Paul will undoubtedly want to put the circus that surrounded the transaction behind him and start building a future with the citys “other team”.
