The Washington Capitals announced Monday that defenceman Mike Green will undergo abdominal surgery, and will be sidelined another four to six weeks. Green has been hampered by a pair of groin injuries that have limited him to just 10 of the Caps 43 games this season. The first setback, a strained right groin muscle, cost him 23 games over a stretch from November to January. Green was eventually cleared to play, but on Jan. 7 - in just the second game into his return - he aggravated his groin injury against the Sharks. He played just over seven minutes before he was forced to leave the game. The Capitals placed the defenceman on the long-term injured list last Thursday, meaning he would not be eligible to return to the lineup before Feb. 1. Green has played in just 59 games since the start of the 2010-11 season. Before the injuries, Green was regarded as one of the top defencemen in the NHL. In the 2008-09 season, he scored 31 goals and added 42 assists. He followed up that campaign with 19 goals and 76 points the following season. Vick barely failed those baseline tests, so the medical staff kept him on the sideline. "He was just a little bit off, enough that we acted on the side of caution to hold him back as our standard protocol says," Burkholder said. "I was with him on the airplane. He was absolutely fine last night. As the days go on, well see, but last night he was pretty good. He told Coach he was fine, he told his teammates he was fine, he told me he was fine, and he was very far along last night." Vick must pass several different tests and be evaluated by an independent neurologist before he can be cleared to return. The Pro Bowl quarterback had thrown for 242 yards and two touchdowns in his first game as a starter in Atlanta since going to prison and being released by the Falcons.
