ARLINGTON, Texas -- Justin Smoak and the Seattle Mariners made everyone forget theyre one of the worst hitting teams in baseball. Smoak hit two three-run homers against his former team and the Mariners used a pair of early eight-run innings to rout the Texas Rangers for the second straight game, winning 21-8 Wednesday night. Smoak had three hits to go with his career high for RBIs as Seattle reached double digits for runs in back-to-back games against the AL West leaders. Jesus Montero homered among his three hits and drove in four runs and Kyle Seager had four hits and two RBIs. Every Seattle starter had at least one hit in amassing 20 hits. Dustin Ackley also had a three-run homer in support of former Rangers minor league prospect Blake Beavan (3-4). "We were hitting with a lot of confidence up there tonight," said Seager, the best hitter in the Mariners lineup at .265 with All-Star Ichiro Suzuki given a rest day. The Mariners came in hitting .229, 13th of 14 in the American League. "Hitting is contagious. We kind of got on a little roll there and everybody was feeling good, real relaxed and everything. It was just one of those days." Rangers starter Derek Holland (4-4) gave up eight hits, eight runs and two walks in 1 2-3 innings Seattle had lost five in a row before beating Texas 10-3 Tuesday night. They scored eight runs in the second and third innings en rout to scoring the second-most runs in club history, equaling a 21-9 victory against the Los Angeles Angels on Sept. 30, 2000. Coincidentally, that was the same day the Rangers gave up the most runs in club history, a 23-2 loss at Oakland. The Mariners started the game with only one player hitting better than .250 in the lineup. No matter, they sent 27 batters to the plate in the second and third innings, scoring 16 runs on 15 hits -- tying their season high for a game -- including three home runs. The 21 runs are the most scored in the majors this season, topping the Rangers and Rockies, who have each scored 18 runs. "Obviously these guys really put it together here the last couple of nights," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "Youre seeing a lot of what weve been talking about in regard to potential with these young players." Holland got off to a quick start, retiring the top of the first in order, including strikeouts of Chone Figgins and Seager. The Mariners found their groove in the second, sending 13 batters to the plate. Ackley and Montero each homered and accounted for five RBIs, all with two outs, in the inning. Miguel Olivo had two RBIs in the inning, and Seager had one. Only Michael Saunders did not reach safely in the inning, though he made up for that with a double and a run scored to start the Mariners eight-run third inning. Montero had two more RBIs and Smoak added a three-run home run. The Rangers needed 97 pitches to retire six hitters. Holland, who was 6-1 in seven career starts against Seattle, including 4-0 with a 2.70 ERA since the start of last season, threw 41 pitches in the second inning before being relieved by Yoshinori Tateyama. Tateyama got the final out of the second, but recorded only one out in the third, giving up seven hits and six earned runs. "Its really upsetting to have something like that happen to you when youve been working so hard," said Holland, who threw 41 pitches in the second inning after a breezing through the first in 10. "I did not give my team a chance to win," he said. "Its a big letdown on my part." The Mariners added four more in the eighth. Ackley reached and scored on Seagers double, his fourth hit, and Montero walked for the second time before Smoak hit his second home run. The Rangers tried to make a game of it, sending nine men to the plate in scoring five runs in the sixth. Texas added two in the seventh. "I wish I wouldnt have given up a couple of those runs that last inning," said Beavan, who gave up five runs on eight hits with no walks and two strikeouts in six innings. "But thats how it goes when you just go after guys and youre throwing majority fastballs and youve got a lead like that," Beavan added. Outfielder Josh Hamilton, who was back in the lineup after missing the previous two games with a respiratory illness, was 2 for 4 with two doubles, one a run-scoring hit that increased his major league-leading RBI total to 57. "We just couldnt get anybody out in those two innings," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "Guys swung the bat over there tonight. "Weve got to live with it and move on," he said. "Thats all we can do." NOTES: Hamilton has hit safely in 40 of 47 games this season. Rangers manager Ron Washington gave shortstop Elvis Andrus the night off. Andrus acknowledged the time off was a mental break after he committed an error on Tuesday. Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo threw out the ceremonial first pitch -- high but across the plate -- caught by Rangers reliever Mike Adams, a Cowboys season-ticket holder. Tyler Bozak scored the winning goal early in the third period Saturday as Toronto kept its faint playoff hopes alive with a 4-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators.FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Aaron Maybin wasted no time getting on the field with his new team. The former Buffalo Bills first-round pick agreed to terms with the New York Jets on Wednesday morning, passed his physical a few hours later and signed a one-year deal -- all in time to practise in the afternoon. "I didnt have a chance to open the playbook," he said with a laugh. "But Ive always been pretty good at learning as I go along. We did a little bit of that today, but Ill be knee-deep in the playbook tonight." The once-promising linebacker was waived by Buffalo on Monday after two disappointing seasons in which he had no sacks and never made it into the starting lineup. The Jets will give Maybin the opportunity to fulfil the potential he showed when the Bills made him the 11th overall pick in 2009 out of Penn State. "He has no clue and doesnt know a single defence, but it was like, Hey, just turn that corner, and he did that pretty good," coach Rex Ryan said of Maybin jumping right into things. "That was great." Maybin -- nicknamed "Maybe" by some disappointed Bills fans -- struggled to keep his weight up while with Buffalo and appeared in only 11 games last season. He was inactive for five straight games, and has been labelled one of the Bills biggest draft busts. "At the end of the day," he said, "I never went out to prove naysayers wrong or anything like that." Despite the lack of production, several teams were reportedly interested in Maybin. But once the Jets made an offer and he spoke to Ryan on the phone, he knew where he wanted to go. "I just felt comfortable and I didnt really want to play for anybody else," Maybin said. "It just felt like a great situation for me to come and get a fresh start." Hell serve as a backup -- if he makes the team -- to a solid group of linebackers that includes David Harris, Bart Scott, Bryan Thomas and Calvin Pace and be a pass-rushing specialist. "Wed settle for if he was Fred Dean," said a smiling Ryan, referring to the Hall of Famer who was a sack artist despite being just six-foot-three and 230 pounds. "That would be nice," Ryan added. "I dont think thats going to happen, but hes got that body type: that long, lean body type like those great pass rushers. He can get off the football now, and I think itll be interesting to see him in this system. I think hes got a chance." One of the biggest challenges for the 6-4 Maybinn was maintaining his weight.ddddddddddddHe entered the league listed at 250 pounds, but was down almost 25 from that when the Bills opened camp. Maybin attributed the significant drop this summer to an illness in the off-season. He said he is about 240 pounds now and wants to get up to about 255 or 256 by the time the season starts. After Maybin had no impact in the Bills pre-season-opening 10-3 loss at Chicago, Buffalo decided to part ways with him. Coach Chan Gailey had described Maybins status with the team as "tenuous" after last season, and said "there wasnt any appreciable improvement" after the Bills cut him. "You can never be surprised or upset with anything that goes on," he said. "Im not going to lie and say that you dont have a chip on your shoulder after something like that happens. But as far as the business goes, you can never be surprised, you can never really take anything too personal." He also said the chance to play the Bills twice a season was "an added bonus," but hes just focused on improving and fitting in with the Jets and Ryans defence. "He wanted to put it out there from the beginning that nothing was going to be given to me and I made it known to him that I didnt want anything given to me," Maybin said. "I want to come here and I want to wear my hard hat to work every day and earn every piece of playing time and everything I get for this organization." The move to bring in the 23-year-old Maybin is somewhat curious considering the Jets gave up on their own former first-round pick in Vernon Gholston when they cut him before the lockout. Gholston, like Maybin with the Bills, was expected to add an instant boost to the teams pass rush, but the former Ohio State star had trouble fitting into the Jets system and failed to register a sack in three seasons after being the sixth overall pick in 2008. Gholston has since signed with the Chicago Bears. A switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defence -- something the Jets run -- didnt help Maybin succeed in Buffalo. He thinks things will be different in New York. "There is not a better scenario that you want to come into, especially a coach with that kind of defensive mentality," Maybin said. "There are a bunch of factors that I think could end up working in my favour. But at the end of the day, it just comes down to wanting to play football and wanting to win. I felt like those are going to be things that I had the opportunity to do here." cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
