MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- Jordan Mein defeated DREAM Welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis in the main event Friday at the Score Fighting Series. In a close fight fought almost entirely on the feet, Mein swept the judges scorecards for a surprising unanimous decision win. The win keeps Mein as the top Canadian prospect fighting outside the UFC. The Lethbridge, Alta., native, who also bested veteran UFCers Joe Riggs and Josh Burkman this year, improved his record to 22-7 with his fifth consecutive victory. "It was really hard fight, Im sore right now but Im glad I did it," said Mein. "Im happy. I know I need to improve theres stuff I need to work on but Im happy with the win." Winnipegs Joe Doerksen took the unanimous decision win over former UFC fighter Luigi Fioravanti in the co-main event. Doerksen, who came into the fight with three consecutive losses, rebounded with a strong striking game and shut the door with a takedown of Fioravanti in the third round. "Its just an honor to have a fight like that and I think the audience was entertained," said Doerksen. "It was a quality win against a quality opponent. I feel great. "I finished every round on top. I wanted the takedown but didnt want to be desperate about it." The African Assassin Rameau Sokoudjou started impressively in his fight with Roy Boughton. Sokoudjou, a UFC and PRIDE vet, looked explosive in the first two rounds landing slams, a spinning back kick and countless strikes. He looked exhausted and overwhelmed by Boughton in the third, however, Sokoudjou managed to hold on for the decision win. Like Mein, Antonio Carvalho of Oshawa, Ont., made a case for a UFC callup. The Canadian Featherweight beat former UFC fighter Douglas Evans for his third consecutive win after a two-year hiatus from the sport. Hamiltons Josh Hill also impressed with his win over Darin Cooley. Hill remained unbeaten at 6-0 with the victory. All of the fights went to a decision on the card except the first two matchups which ended with highlight reel finishes. Mike Reily knocked out Tyler Hardcastle with a terrific slam while Alex Ricci stopped Mike Sledzion with strikes. Other fights on the card, included Nick Mamalis defeating Torontos Adrian Wooley by split decision; Saskatchewans Kurt Southern defeating Jorge Britto; and Halifaxs Tristan Johnson bested Will Romero. Hurd, 26, said he would plead not guilty to charges that he tried to buy large quantities of cocaine and marijuana, according to a Monday court filing by his new attorneys, Michael McCrum of San Antonio and Jay Ethington of Dallas. Authorities say they caught Hurd telling an undercover agent that he and a co-conspirator already distributed cocaine throughout the Chicago area and needed more supply. McCrum, a former federal prosecutor who was once nominated to become the U.S. attorney for Texas western district, said he was "honoured" to represent Hurd but it was too early to comment on the charges. "I am looking forward to seeing what evidence the government may have," McCrum said Monday. "I believe theres much more to the story than whats being portrayed." Hurd, a former Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys wide receiver, was arrested in December during an undercover sting. The Bears released him a few days after the arrest.dddddddddddd According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court, Hurd told an undercover agent that he was interested in buying five to 10 pounds of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week to distribute in the Chicago area. He allegedly said he and a co-conspirator already distribute about four kilograms of cocaine per week. A kilogram is about 2.2 pounds. Hurd allegedly described himself as the person who handled "high-end deals." Hurd was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, but federal court records indicated that hearing was cancelled. Kathy Colvin, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorneys office in Dallas, declined to comment. Ethington described his new client as in a "transition period" following his arrest. The attorneys would not say whether Hurd continues to live in the Chicago area or in San Antonio, where he played high school football and several family members still live.
