SAN DIEGO -- There is no secret when it comes to facing Cincinnati Reds reliever Aroldis Chapman and his 100 mph fastball. "Hes not going to do anything tricky," the San Diego Padres Chris Denorfia said. "Hes going to throw it 100 mph. You have to be ready for the fastball. You have to sit on the fastball. It comes so quickly its hard for you to do anything with it." Denorfia did plenty against Chapman on Monday night, hitting a two-run, pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Padres a 2-1 victory over the Reds. "It sounded great off the bat," Padres manager Bud Black said. "I say 80 per cent of home runs you know it from the sound no matter who is pitching. But that sound tonight on his homer there was no doubt about it." With the Reds leading, 1-0, Chapman (3-4) walked leadoff batter Yonder Alonso on a 3-2 pitch. Denorfia then drove a 98 mph first-pitch offering from Chapman over the centre-field fence 423 feet away to deal the Reds their fourth straight loss. "It was pretty sweet. It was one of those when you hit it hard on that part of the bat, you dont even feel the vibration, it felt great," Denorfia said of his first game-ending home run of his career and third walk-off hit of his career. "It was a fastball like I throw everybody," said Chapman, who threw a 102 mph fastball in Alonsos at-bat. "I just threw a fastball and he hit a home run and theres nothing I can do." Chapman was disappointed he walked Alonso. "It bothered me because he was left-handed," Chapman said. "I walked him and after that I had to just continue going." Luke Gregerson (5-5) pitched the ninth for the win. San Diego natives Mike Leake and Sean OSullivan matched up against each other. Leake went seven scoreless innings for the Reds, allowing four singles. He retired 12 of the final 13 batters he faced. OSullivan, making his third start for the season for the Padres, went six innings and allowed one run on five hits. He walked five and struck out one. Reds centre fielder Derrick Robinson led off the fifth with a triple off the fence in left-centre. He scored when Cesar Izturis hit a grounder to first, which Alonso grabbed, touched first base for the putout then fired home, but Robinson just beat the throw to catcher Nick Hundley. That snapped a scoreless streak of 22 innings for the Reds going back to the second inning of Saturday nights game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. They have scored just three runs in their last four games. "OSullivan hung in there and made some pitches where he had to," Black said. "He battled and gave up only one run." Cincinnati loaded the bases in the fifth, but OSullivan got Devin Mesoraco to hit a grounder to short. The teams combined to leave 15 runners on base through the first five innings -- nine for the Reds. They also left the bases loaded in the first, while the Padres left them loaded in the third. Leake got Mark Kotsay to ground to first baseman Joey Votto with the bases loaded to end the third. The only batter to reach after the third against Leake was Everth Cabrera, who got on with an infield single leading off the fifth, but he was caught stealing by Mesoraco. Cabrera had two of the four hits off Leake. NOTES: Reds OF Shin-Soo Choo is listed as day-to-day after twisting his left ankle stealing second Sunday in Los Angeles. ... Reds 2B Brandon Phillips was also not in the starting lineup Monday. Reds manager Dusty Baker had told Phillips before Sundays game that he would get the day off. "I like to give the guys from the All-Star team a day off even after they get back after the All-Star game," Baker said. Izturis got the start at second for the Reds. ... Houston, TX (Sports Network) - The Houston Dynamo will aim to break out of a five-game winless streak when they host rivals FC Dallas in Major League Soccer action at Robertson Stadium on Saturday. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Denvers 99-88 win over the NBA-worst Charlotte Bobcats was far from his teams best effort of the season, but Nuggets coach George Karl isnt complaining. Not one bit. "This was a beautiful game," Karl said. "Im happy. We had turnovers and missed open 3-pointers and still played hard enough defensively to get a win. It wasnt pretty, but it sure was special." The Nuggets were 2 of 17 on 3-pointers and turned the ball over 25 times, but still got the win to remain in the thick of the playoff race in the Western Conference. The Nuggets entered in a three-way tie for seventh place in the standings with Houston and Utah. The Rockets beat Memphis, while the Jazz played late Friday night. Arron Afflalo scored 12 of his team-high 19 points in the second half and added 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. "He helped us out a lot, especially in the third quarter," Ty Lawson said of Afflalo. "They came out strong, everybody was missing shots and he was carrying us then, getting fouled, getting to the bucket and thats what we needed. I think hes one of the best two guards playing. I think he just has to keep going." Lawson added 14 points and 10 assists, while Corey Brewer added 17 points off the bench on 7-for-11 shooting, and Kenneth Faried had 12 points. The importance of the win was not lost on the Nuggets (28-25). "We needed this win," Brewer said. "We gave one away the other night in Toronto. We had to get this one and now we need to go to Orlando and get another and keep moving up in the standings." Gerald Henderson had 21 points to lead the Bobcats, whove lost six straight games and remain the only team in the league with fewer than 10 victories. The Bobcats may have a tough time reaching that 10-win plateau after losing their leading scorer Corey Maggette in the second half to a strained right Achilles. Bobcats coach Paul Silas said Maggette is out at least a week and will not travel with the team to Detroit for Saturday nights game. Results of an MRI exam were not yet known. Maggette had 19 points and six rebounds before the injury and came into the game and is averaging 15.4 points per game. "I just hope hes OK," Henderson said.dddddddddddd "I didnt see where he hurt it. Obviously, hes a huge part of what were doing. Hopefully, it turns out all right for him." Silas said he expects Reggie Williams to replace Maggette in the starting lineup. Williams had 15 points off the bench. The Bobcats came in worst in the league in 3-point shooting percentage at less than 30 per cent, but opened the game by hitting four of their first five shots from behind the arc to build a 28-23 lead after the first quarter. Maggette hit three of those long-range shots. D.J. Augustin, who was encouraged by Silas to shoot more, attempted just five shots and made two, finishing with four points. Augustin, who Silas refers to as his teams "best shooter," has just 21 points in the past six games and cant seem to break out of his slump. The Nuggets regained the lead in the second quarter and led by as many as nine before the Bobcats closed the first half with an 8-0 run to trim the deficit to 52-51 entering the locker room. But the third quarter, which has been the Achilles heel for the Bobcats all season, did them in once again. Denver outscored them 22-15 to take an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter which they never relinquished. "We just cant seem to pick it up in that third quarter," Silas said. The Nuggets outscored the Bobcats 58-38 in the paint and outrebounded them by 15 to make up for their poor long-distance shooting. The got 17 second-chance points compared to just four for Charlotte. Despite the loss, Silas was happy with the way his outmanned team played. "I like the way we hustled," Silas said. "We played hard and were not giving up and thats what this thing is all about. If we were going out there and just showing up then Id have a real problem. But I dont have a problem with these guys at all." Notes: Former N.C. State and NBA legend David Thompson was at Friday nights game. ... Maggette and Augustin were both assessed technical fouls for disputing calls. ... The Bobcats reserves scored 42 points, marking the fifth time in six games theyve scored at least 38 points. ...
