LAS VEGAS -- Demetrious (Mighty Mouse) Johnson won a unanimous decision over former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Angel Torres in a close fight on the undercard of UFC 130 on Saturday night. All three judges scored it 29-28 for the five-foot-three Johnson in a decision that was booed by the crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Johnson (14-1) came into the fight off the back of a win over Japanese star Kid Yamamoto. Torres (39-4) had won two straight since losing his title to Brian Bowles in August 2009 and a subsequent fight to Joseph Benavidez. Both wins came under the tutelage of Montreal coach Firas Zahabi. Torres was even introduced as fighting out of Montreal by way of East Chicago, Indiana. The two engaged in a spirited ground battle in the first round, with plenty of position changes. It was more of the same in the second, with Johnson escaping a triangle choke. The five-foot-nine Torres was busy on the bottom before reversing position in the third round of a 135-pound fight that looked like two brothers wrestling in the backyard. The bout put some pep in a sluggish undercard in advance of the main event between former light-heavyweight champion Quinton (Rampage) Jackson and Matt (The Hammer) Hamill. Hamill replaced Thiago Silva after the big Brazilian was derailed by a positive drug test. The main event was slated to be Frankie (The Answer) Edgars lightweight title defence against Gray Maynard but both men were injured in training in the leadup to the fight. The judges used ringside monitors for the first time in Nevada, an innovation also slated for use at UFC 131 on June 11 in Vancouver. Earlier, Tim (The Barbarian) Boetsch used his wrestling skills to outmuscle Kendall (Da Spyder) Grove and win his debut at middleweight via unanimous 30-27 decision. The six-foot-six Grove was unable to get his game going and is now 2-4 in his last six fights and 7-6 overall in the UFC. "I couldnt get off tonight and he was definitely stronger than I thought," Grove said. Boetsch dropped down in weight class after losing to Phil (Mr. Wonderful) Davis last time out. "Phil Davis really confirmed my thoughts about dropping to middleweight," he said in the cage. Lightweight Gleison Tibau (33-7) stopped Rafaello Oliveira via rear naked choke at 3:28 of the second round after putting Oliveira (10-4) down with a left uppercut and then hurting him with a big left. Both fighters were injury replacements on the card. Brazilian bantamweight Renan Barao (28-1 with one no contest) won a unanimous decision over a game but outgunned Cole Escovedo (17-7) in a matchup of UFC newcomers. Barao, who has not lost since his pro debut in April 2005, managed several big slams and dug into a bag of tricks that included flying knees and spinning back fists but could not stop Escovedo.
