Urumqi is considered the main industrial centers of Xinjiang. Unlike the other cities of the autonomous region, it has almost no historical landmarks on China tourism, but the city differs with its infrastructure and modern architecture. Perhaps, it is the only city in Xinjiang which is more Uygurian, rather than Chinese one. Probably, that is why the Uygur themselves consider the heart of Xinjiang is Kashgar city, where they managed to follow their traditions and customs, and its streets still preserve its history up to date.

Southern Pasture is an area at the northern foot of Karawuquntag Mountain 75 kilometers (46 miles) south of Urumqi. One of the most spectacular spots of Silk Road travel here is the West White Poplar Gully. Traveling through this narrow verdant gully is a unique experience for sightseers who love snowcapped peaks, waterfalls, dragon-spruce trees and wild flowers. An ideal place for an excursion, visitors can take a horseback tour guided by local Kazakhs.

The highlight of the Southern Pastures must be the West White Poplar Gully. Walking in the gully, visitors can appreciate the snow-capped mountains decorated by tall, straight firs whilst horses and cows browse leisurely on the green grassland. Local Kazak in milky white yurts will entertain visitors with offerings of fragrant milk tea, mare's milk, cheese and roasted lamb. The local youngsters are happy to share their dancing and enjoyment of horses with visitors, being very welcoming. Other spots in the Southern Pastures are also wonderful. Chrysanthemum Tai, Zhaobi Mountain, Miao'er Gully and Daxi Gully are fascinating and amazing places for Silk Road travel too.
