OTTAWA -- Jason Spezza always believed he could score in the shootout and on Monday he was finally able to prove it. Spezza scored the lone goal in the shootout to give the Ottawa Senators a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. This was Ottawas first shootout win of the season after losing their four previous attempts. "Id been good in the shootout historically," said Spezza. "You take pride in that stuff and especially when youre losing games. There was definitely a little extra fist pump and it felt good." Spezza wasnt the only one feeling relief at winning in the shootout as Craig Anderson was clearly elated after stopping Sean Couturier to seal the win. "Its about time," said Anderson, who made 25 saves. "I think weve been in this situation a few times and havent been on the right side of that and (Monday) we find a way to get two points and thats really all that mattered. Youve got to be excited about two points." Clarke MacArthur struck twice for the Senators (12-14-5) in regulation time. Patrick Wiercioch and Kyle Turris also scored for Ottawa. Michael Raffl, Jakub Voracek, Luke Schenn and Kimmo Timonen scored for the Flyers (13-14-3). Steve Mason stopped 30 shots. With the win the Senators put an end to a five-game losing streak on home ice. "Home ice has been a struggle and we want to give the people something to cheer about," said Spezza. "Weve been frustrated with the fact we cant win and it was nice to finally send the fans home happy." Turris gave the Senators a 4-3 lead with his first in eight games as he carried the puck from his own end, moved in along the side boards and fired a shot that went in off Luke Schenn at 8:21 of the third. The lead was short lived as Timonen tied the game with his second of the season with a floater from just inside the blue-line. Trailing 3-2, the Senators tied the game early in the third as a Bobby Ryan rebound went in off MacArthur for his second of the night. "Anytime you go in the third period with a lead you want to keep it," said Flyers captain Claude Giroux. "You want to make sure everyone is accountable for what they do and they were able to get a couple of goals. We fought back and got a point, but its tough to lose in a shootout." MacArthur now has 11 points (seven goals, four assists) in his last ten games. "(MacArthurs) probably been our most consistent guy all year," said Spezza. "Even at the start of the year when he wasnt scoring you just knew it was a matter of time and now that he is hes driving us offensively and doing a lot of great things. Hes been a heck of a pick-up." Ottawa got off to a better start in the second and was able to take the lead on a power-play goal. Ryan made a back pass to Wiercioch who scored on an open net to make it 2-1. While the Senators will definitely take the two points they admit there remains a lot of room for improvement. "It was good to get rewarded," said MacArthur. "Were still sloppy in some areas. We still can play better, weve still got to play harder if we want to win every night." The Flyers regained the lead with two goals in less than a two-minute span midway through the period. Voracek tied the game on a power-play goal and shortly after that Luke Schenn made it 3-2 with a shot from the boards. Anderson, with traffic in front, never even reacted to the shot until he heard the crowd of 15,786. Raffl, with his first NHL career goal, gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead at the eight-minute mark of the first. "Its nice to get the first goal, but it would be even nicer with the win," said Raffl. "Its kind of disappointing at the same time." Ottawa did manage to end the period tied 1-1. Spezza fed MacArthur who broke in alone on Mason and was able to get a stick on a bouncing puck to pick up his tenth of the season. This was the final meeting between the two teams this season with the Flyers winning the series 2-1. With three games in the next five nights the Senators see an opportunity to gain ground in the standings. "This is a great week for us to get some points," said MacArthur. "If we want to get back in the hunt youve got to string some games together so thats what it comes down to." Notes: D Eric Gryba and C Mike Hoffman were healthy scratches for the Senators. a The Flyers were without C Vincent Lecavalier (back fracture, indefinitely). LW Tye McGinn was recalled from the AHLs Adirondack Phantoms and was a healthy scratch Monday as were D Erik Gustafsson and D Hal Gill. . Even this week, with 15 games on the schedule (enjoy your byes Indy and Pittsburgh), eight games have a spread of four points or less, so it figures to be competitive in many locations.ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Bury the blueprints on how to thwart Tim Tebow. He can beat you with his arm as well as his legs. The formula up until last weekend was to stack the box and dare him to beat you with all those errant passes. But coming off his worst game as a pro, the most maligned quarterback in football morphed into a conventional quarterback Sunday in snapping out of a three-game funk and sending the mighty Pittsburgh Steelers to an early playoff exit. Tebow, whose record-setting redemption kept Denvers thrilling roller coaster of a season roaring right along, is more challenging than ever to defend. So, the top-seeded New England Patriots are preparing for deep passes as much as the Broncos bothersome read-option offence. "Theyre a tough team to prepare for because they do a lot of different things," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "There arent really any other teams like them in the league, so theres no other team you can really draw that experience from. What they do offensively is a little bit unique." After relying all season on the leagues best ground game, Tebow turned into an Aaron Rodgers-Drew Brees-Tom Brady lookalike by throwing for 316 yards against the leagues No. 1 defence in his first playoff appearance. It wasnt just his 80-yard bullet to Demaryius Thomas, which allowed the Broncos to beat the Steelers 29-23 on the first play of overtime. In the second quarter, Tebow completed four passes of 30 yards or better, something that hadnt been done in the NFL in half a century. Belichick insists this isnt Tebow 2.0, however. "I think hes done a lot of those things all year," Belichick said. "He had a great game against Pittsburgh, no doubt about it. But hes played well throughout the season, whether it be managing the team, making decisions, running the ball, throwing the ball, scrambling, any and all of the above. Hes a good football player." One whos now multidimensional. At John Elways urging, Tebow was more aggressive Sunday, heeding his bosss advice to "pull the trigger." "Yeah, I think I did play pretty aggressive in the game," Tebow said Tuesday after the Broncos returned to work following their exhilarating weekend win. "We were playing a very good team, very good defence. And you have to be willing to take some chances to make some big plays against them, because they have so many good players and so many good guys that are rushing, getting to the quarterback. And the offensive line did a great job and the receivers stepped up and made huge plays." The Broncos (9-8) need an encore performance to beat the heavily favoured and well-rested Patriots (13-3). Tebows 31.6 yards per completion Sunday were the second-most ever for an NFL quarterback in the regular season or playoffs, surpassed only by Joe Namaths 33.7-yard average against Baltimore in September 1972. "It was big for us because in this league, you have to keep people off balance," wide receiver Eddie Royal said. "Before last week, people knew they had to stop the run. Stop the run and shut down our offence. But now, they have to second-guess themselves, Oh, they can throww the ball and be explosive and make some pass plays.dddddddddddd" It was the Broncos reliance on the run that sold the play-fake on the first snap of overtime -- they had rushed on 23 of 25 first downs up to that point. "Its always good to see us get the big passes, especially because everyone says we cant throw the ball," said tailback Willis McGahee, who had implored the Broncos to improve their passing attack to enhance an already stout ground game. The Broncos formula during their eight wins under Tebow had been to play stout defence and spectacular on special teams to keep the grind-it-out offence within striking distance until Tebow could pull off his last-minute magic. Now, theyre mixing in explosive plays. And Tebow doesnt have to be pinpoint with his passes if the safeties come up and cornerbacks cover the receivers 1-on-1 because his reads will be simpler. Hell have more margin for error if players such as Thomas, who has great hands, have more room to manoeuvre and fewer defensive backs to get in his way. "We were just waiting for him to come out and play the way we knew he could and show everybody," Royal said. Eric Decker, who sprained his left knee on the first play of the second quarter last week, isnt expected to play against the Patriots. Although he was the Broncos best receiver in the regular season, with 44 catches for 612 yards and eight touchdowns, half his scores came with Kyle Orton at quarterback. Tebows top target was actually Thomas, who caught every one of his 32 receptions for 551 yards and four TDs from the lefty. Over the last two months, Thomas has been one of the most dominating players in the league despite playing in a conservative offence that doesnt allow receivers to strut their stuff too much. On Sunday, he amassed 204 yards on just four receptions. "I remember watching him at Georgia Tech and seeing this guy," Royal said. "He didnt get many opportunities there. But when he got them, he made big plays and thats the type of player that he is. I cant imagine what he would do with 20 targets a game. The skys the limit for this kid. I just hope he continues to get better and I know he will." In an interesting twist, former Broncos coach Josh McDaniels, who took a chance by drafting both Thomas and Tebow in the first round two years ago, has rejoined the Patriots staff in time to help them try to end Denvers season. "You know, hes a very good coach and I wish him nothing but the best, and Im very thankful for him having the confidence in drafting me," Tebow said. "But Im very excited about the coaches that we have here." Notes: With Decker down, the Broncos promoted wide receiver DAndre Goodwin from their practice squad Tuesday and placed fullback Spencer Larsen (knee) on IR. ... Besides Decker, DE Elvis Dumervil (right ankle), TE Daniel Fells (unspecified injury), and safeties Brian Dawkins (neck) and David Bruton (Achilles) were held out of practice. ...
