ORLANDO, Fla. — Here is the official Point Forward ballot for the 2011-12 dunk contest — a really close fight between four equally matched guys. There might not have been a flashbulb-memory dunk in here — no iconic image to take away —cheap jordans
but there were at least a half-dozen solid slams. Picking a winner was tough, though Derrick Williams probably disqualified himself by going for the highest possible degree of difficult on his last dunk and coming up empty before surrendering.
1. Jeremy Evans

The right dunker won, even though Evans’ first-round dunk, a run-of-the-mill reverse he completed after catching the ball in mid-air, might have been the second-worst of the 12 dunks tonight. It wasn’t innovative aside from the camera attached to Evans’ ear, and he took off from too far under the rim.
But his next two dunks were spectacular and worthy a champion. Catching two balls, leaping over a seated Gordon Hayward and dunking the balls one-by-one is a high-degree-of-difficulty dunk. It might have been my favorite of the night, all told. His second dunk, over the yammering Kevin Hart, was one of those dunks that was more difficult than it looked. Hart is short, of course, but he was standing well outside the block/charge circle, forcing Evans to take off from just inside left edge of the paint a bit below the foul line. In other words: Evans took off from way, way out, considering he had to leap a human being on the way to the rim.
Extra props for the Karl Malone touches, both obvious (the jersey) and more subtle (the trademark Malone hand behind the head styling).
Two really, really great dunks, and he didn’t need a huge number of tries to hit any of his three. Good stuff.
2. Paul George

His final dunk, with the Larry Bird sticker, also falls under the “harder than it looks category,” though George loses some points for taking four tries in order to make it. If you watch closely, you’ll notice that George tried to execute two things at once — one with either hand — at the same moment his head was directly under the rim, his body twisting in mid-air. He slapped the glass with his left as he started the wind-mill motion with his right. That’s a brutally difficult dunk. And you know you get extra points here for any reference to Bird.
The glow-in-the-dark reverse-360 wind-mill was a fun throwback to Vince Carter, who brought down the house with the same basic dunk — minus the glow-in-the-dark trickery — in 2000. It might not have been original in concept, but it’s a tough, stylish dunk that just looks good. Jumping over Roy Hibbert on his first dunk made for a fun visual, even if George needed a push off of Hibbert’s shoulder to get the requisite height and bumped Hibbert’s head a bit on the way up.
There wasn’t an “A” dunk in George’s arsenals, but three B+/A- dunks make for a nice showing.
3. Chase Budinger

Budinger gets the nod over Williams even though he didn’t have one dunk as spectacular as Williams’ second slam. Budinger’s blind-folded homage to Cedric Ceballos — wonderful to see Ced healthy and in attendance, by the way —cheap jordans
was really tough to execute, unless Budinger is a skilled thespian. Budinger missed his first attempted badly and stepped tentatively on the first half-dozen paces of his second (successful) try. Going for the reverse jam after whiffing on the standard two-hand attempt was a nice surprise — so good it made it pretty clear the initial “blindness” was exaggerated and/or a total hoax.
Budinger’s other two dunks were merely nice, but he executed them well. Jumping over Diddy marked the first of several “jumping over Person X” dunks, and Budinger did it with ease from just beyond the dotted line. His second dunk, a windmill, looked pretty bland, but it was essentially the same as Williams’ first dunk, only without a motorcycle.
4. Derrick Williams

This feels wrong, since Williams’ second slam, aided by Ricky Rubio, was probably my No. 2 dunk of the night. I’m a sucker for guys who put the side or rear of the backboard in play — Rudy Fernandez and Andre Iguodala come to mind from prior contests — and Williams stuffed this sucker on just his second try. Williams caught the ball in mid-spin, his back almost totally turned away from the hoop, before completing the full 360 and slamming it through. A great, great dunk — in the conversation with the Evans/Hayward dunk and George’s Carter-style 360 for my favorite of the night.
But the other two? Eh. The use of the motorcycle in the first dunk masked a fairly ho-hum windmill from the dotted line, and Williams essentially punted his final attempt in trying to toss the ball off the backboard, catch it in midair, put it through his legs and slam it. That aborted attempt would have been the best dunk of the night and one of the best in the history of the competition,jordans on sale
but Williams couldn’t make it, and you can only get so many points for trying.
The new format, with no judges or rounds through which the dunkers had to advance, made for a speedier contest but one without much suspense. Moving away from in-house judges empowers the fans and means each dunker gets to use his best dunk instead of saving one for a finals berth that never happens. Those are good things –or things worth trying, at least. It also means viewers in attendance and at home have no idea who is “winning” or “losing,” and thus have no clue what is really at stake on any given attempt. Correction: You had that sense in general, but not in a precise way. You knew, for instance, that Williams would have to really go for it on his final dunk after two really good dunks from Evans, but you could only know that in a vague way.

and it was fun. The league should continue to experiment.
