SHANGHAI, China -- The sprinters took over the pool at the world championships Saturday morning, with American Jessica Hardy the fastest qualifier in two events. Her teammates, Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, who have combined to win eight of their teams 18 pool swimming medals, both had the morning off. Phelps will swim his final individual event of the eight-day meet Saturday night in the 100 butterfly. Lochte wraps up in the 400 individual medley Sunday, when both he and Phelps are likely to be on the U.S. squad for the 4x100 medley relay. Hardy and Therese Alshammar of Sweden tied for the leading time in the 50-metre freestyle preliminaries before Hardy returned to top the 50 breaststroke heats. "Its been hard all week just sitting there because Ive really wanted to race," Hardy said. "I was really giddy with excitement this morning. I didnt know what to expect because I sometimes dont always like to do well in doubles, but Im really happy." Winnipegs Chantal Van Landeghem tied for seventh, while Montreals Victoria Poon was 14th. Both qualified. Hardy and Alshammar swam next to each other in the same heat, with both stopping the clock at 24.82 seconds. Alshammar, who turns 34 next month, is seeking her first world title after taking silver two years ago in Rome and in 2007. Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus, who tied for gold in the 100 free on Friday, was third at 24.85. Also advancing to the evening semifinals were Dutch teammates Marleen Veldhuis and Ranomi Kromowidjojo, American Amanda Weir, and Denmarks Jeanette Ottesen, who shared the 100 free gold with Herasimenia. Germanys Britta Steffen didnt defend her 50 free title after posting slow times in her previous events and dropping out of the meet. Hardys time of 30.20 made her the top qualifier for the 50 breast, in which she holds the world record and won the 2007 world title. Hardy is working her way back after serving a one-year ban that cost her a spot on the U.S. team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Court of Arbitration for Sport accepted that she was not at fault for taking a contaminated dietary supplement, but she still was penalized. "Possibilities are endless," she said. "Im really excited and really, really grateful." Defending champion Yuliya Efimova of Russia and American Rebecca Soni, who swept the 100 and 200 breast here, tied for second at 30.72. "The field is really tough, with Hardy in there, with Yuliya, so Im not expecting anything," Soni said. "Its been a great run so far and now its just the fun stuff -- the relay and the 50." Leisel Jones of Australia, the silver medallist in 2007, was fourth at 30.93. Hardy will have less than 45 minutes between evening semifinals. "I definitely held back in both my races this morning," she said. "You want to make sure you feel good and I did." The United States easily advanced in the womens 4x100 medley relay heats with the top time of 3:56.95 by Elizabeth Pelton, Soni, Christine Magnuson and Weir. Russia was second at 3:59.08, followed by defending champion China at 3:59.44. Canada finished seventh. Sinead Russell of Oakville, Ont., Calgarys Jillian Tyler, Quebec Citys Katerine Savard and Van Landeghem combined for a time of 4:00.72. Chinas Sun Yang swam the fastest time in the 1,500 free at 14:48.13, putting himself in position to make a run at Grant Hacketts 10-year-old world record in Sundays final. The four-time world champion from Australia set the mark of 14:34.56 at the 2001 worlds in Japan. Sun already won the 800 free here. "Sun has definitely taken a huge leap toward taking down that world record for either this year or next year," defending champion Ous Mellouli of Tunisia said. "Obviously hes at home, hes pumped up and hes ready. You can tell. This is probably his best shot at it." Mellouli finished 15th and didnt advance after being fourth in the 800. Hungarys Gergo Kis, the bronze medallist in the 800, was second at 14:52.72. American Peter Vanderkaay was third at 14:54.99 and teammate Chad La Tourette fourth. Victorias Ryan Cochrane, second in the 800, was fifth. In the mens 50 backstroke, Gerhard Zandberg of South Africa led the way at 24.72. He won the bronze in 2009 and was the world champion in 2007. Camille Lacourt of France, who tied for gold in the 100 back, was second at 25.03. Helge Meeuw of Germany was third at 24.04. Montreals Charles Francis reached the semis, finishing 16th. Bronson Arroyo (6-6) tossed eight brilliant innings, giving up one run on five hits while fanning five and walking one. Francisco Cordero tossed a perfect ninth to earn his 15th save of the season. That was great, we needed that, Reds manager Dusty Baker said of Arroyos performance. nike roshe run comprar . -- The Jacksonville Jaguars are committed to keeping place-kicker Josh Scobee. RALEIGH, N.C. -- First in shots, last in goals. Despite that statistical oddity, the Carolina Hurricanes never wavered. Instead, they did what they do best. They kept shooting, and those pucks finally started finding the net. Eric Staal scored three goals, Jeff Skinner added two and the Hurricanes earned their first victory of the season by handing the Buffalo Sabres their first loss, 6-3 on Thursday night. "Its going to come. Weve got good enough players, good enough skill to score," Staal said. "We just need to play the right way and play a little bit more physical and aggressive one-on-one, and we did a great job tonight." Skinner and Staal scored 9 seconds apart during Carolinas four-goal second period that also included a short-handed score by Justin Faulk. Jordan Staal, Joni Pitkanen and Zac Dalpe each had two assists and Cam Ward made 30 saves for the Hurricanes, who entered as one of five winless teams in the NHL. Their beefed-up offence -- which added Jordan Staal and Alexander Semin during the off-season -- entered averaging an NHL-best 39 shots on goal yet managed a league-fewest two goals in their first two games. "Youve just got to stick with it," Skinner said. "Youve got to be tougher, I think, around their net and today we beared down a little bit more and you stick with it, you keep putting that many pucks on the net, youre going to get a bounce here or there, and ones going to go in for you." Jason Pominvilles second goal made it 4-3 with 13:54 left. Eric Staal restored Carolinas two-goal lead by firing the puck past Jhonas Enroth at 10:34. "Good teams do" respond, Eric Staal said. "When you have opportunities that go the other way and end up in your net, you need to regroup and refocus. Good teams find a way to refocus, and we did that tonight." Staal polished off his 13th career hat trick with an empty-nettter with 1:28 left.dddddddddddd. Cody Hodgson also scored and Thomas Vanek had two assists for the Sabres. Enroth, who had allowed one goal in two previous career starts against Carolina, stopped 32 shots and said he "wasnt in the right position (for) a couple of shots." Carolina outshot Buffalo 38-33 and put the puck on net a season-best 21 times during its busy second period. The most dizzying sequence started when Skinner broke a 2-all tie by pushing a wraparound past Enroths left pad with 6:04 left. The Hurricanes won the ensuing draw, and Eric Staal slipped through the Buffalo defence and beat Enroth with a backhand at 5:55 to make it 4-2 and cap a frenetic period in which the teams combined for six goals. "Youve got to get big saves on those plays or they end up hurting you," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said, "and that one really hurt us." Skinner gave Carolina its first lead of the season 62 seconds into the second with a tricky backhand over Enroths left shoulder. Faulk then made it 2-0 with 15:54 left when he stormed down the ice on a short-handed 3-on-1 rush and blasted a slap shot by Enroth. Then it was the Sabres turn to get the offence going. Hodgson pulled Buffalo within a goal at 11:10 by beating Ward with a backhand of a loose rebound, and Pominville tied it at 2 with 9:21 left with a redirection of Christian Ehrhoffs slap shot. "I think we gave up the puck too much," Pominville said. "We battled back a couple of times . (but) we gave up too many rush opportunities and were a little too casual with the puck. It just wasnt our usual game." NOTES: Skinner finished with his eighth career multigoal game. . The teams play again Friday night in Buffalo. . The Hurricanes record for quickest two goals came in 1987 when Sylvain Turgeon scored twice in 6 seconds. . Buffalo didnt put a shot on goal until LW Marcus Folignos backhand roughly 7 1/2 minutes in. cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
