If North American soccer fans werent aware of the Montreal Impacts impending arrival in MLS before last weeks expansion draft, they certainly are now. The Impact made waves across the league by selecting Houston veteran Brian Ching, who had previously stated he would retire from the game if picked by Montreal. Ching was the first name announced by Jesse Marsch and it is a gutsy move from the first-year head coach. The former United States international turns 34 next year and found playing time limited in 2011 due to injuries, but he is a natural leader with a superb strikers instinct and would be the perfect type of character to have in the locker room of an expansion team. The problem is that he doesnt want to leave Houston. The Impact have been heavily criticized for picking Ching in some quarters because of his open statement about his desire to stay with the Dynamo as they move into a new stadium next year, but Marsch and his colleagues did nothing wrong. The Dynamo should have protected their captain and all-time leading goal-scorer instead of hoping his pre-draft comments would scare Montreal off. I would be amazed if we ever see Ching pull on a Montreal Impact jersey. Its more likely that the Impact and Dynamo will work out a deal that will see him traded back to Houston before preseason gets underway. For now however, Chings future remains up in the air as Montreal continues to make plans for their inaugural season. Overall, I think Marsch did a good job with the quality he acquired through the draft and also a subsequent trade. When picking players in the draft, it is not just a matter of who will fit into your own squad, but also their potential value within the league. That was evident Monday afternoon when the Impact announced the signing of midfielder Davy Arnaud from Sporting Kansas City in exchange for Seth Sinovic and allocation money. Sinovic is a KC native who was picked in the expansion draft, and to be able to trade him back to Kansas City in exchange for someone of Arnauds quality is a big step forward for the squad. Arnaud had been with Kansas City for a decade and has made nearly 250 appearances in MLS, but became more of a bench player last year rather than a regular starter. With his arrival in Montreal, the Impact gain one of the leagues most experienced midfielders who will be able to have a big influence both on and off the pitch. Away from the talent available within MLS, this week Marsch is exploring the opportunity of adding talent from abroad. Hes currently in Portugal along with the Impacts Sporting Director Nick De Santis looking at potential new signings. As Montreal continues to build their squad, Canadas other two teams have been busy reshaping theirs. Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps both released players to make way for potential upgrades ahead of next season.There was no real surprise with any of the seven players waived by Toronto FC. Interestingly, all seven men released by Aron Winter were players he had brought to the club earlier in the year, but many of them hardly kicked a ball in MLS. Forward Javier Martina headlined the list after a season where he failed to live up to the potential he had shown in glimpses early in the year. When Martina scored two goals in the home opener win over Portland, it looked as though he would be able to make in impact in his first season in Major League Soccer, but for long stretches of the season he was ineffective, and his performances both during matches and in training were not good enough for Winter. Along with the departure of Jeb Brovsky to Montreal in the expansion draft, Vancouver Whitecaps also released two more players. Draft pick Bilal Duckett has many good qualities but still needs to develop much more before he can be considered an MLS regular. The other player the Caps let go was a bit more of a surprise. Nizar Khalfan was picked up by Philadelphia Union after being placed on waivers by the Caps. There were certainly times during the season where the Tanzanian was able to make an impact on games using his pace and trickery from wide areas, but the Whitecaps management felt they hadnt seen enough to warrant an extended stay. The departures of Duckett, Khalfan and Brovsky will give new head coach Martin Rennie the opportunity to add his own pieces to the squad he inherited as he looks for significant improvement heading into 2012. The next step in squad building for all MLS clubs is stage one of the leagues re-entry draft, which takes place on December 5th.
