SINGAPORE -- Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel claimed pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix, besting his fading championship rivals Saturday despite gambling on skipping the last flying lap of qualifying. Already boasting a big lead in the Formula One drivers championship standings, Vettel sat out the last section of qualifying under the lights at Marina Bay in order to save a set of the super soft tires for the race. The decision looked questionable as Mercedes Nico Rosberg, Red Bull teammate Mark Webber and Lotus Romain Grosjean all began strongly on their final laps and threatened to tip Vettel out of top spot. Vettel was chewing his fingernails watching on the monitors in the garage and pumped his fist when he saw his time had stood up, as Rosberg finished a tenth of a second behind him in second. Grosjean, Webber and Mercedes Lewis Hamilton were third through fifth respectively, all within half a second of Vettel, who notched his fifth pole position of the season. "I knew we had a cushion, that is why we decided not to run," Vettel said. "The thing you dont know is how much the track improves. It was very close and its not the best feeling when you are standing there and watching. "Im very happy with the result, the car has been phenomenal all weekend." Rosberg described second place as "a great result," but said the thin margin between his time and that of Vettel was a bit misleading. "They (Red Bull) gambled a bit and I am sure they are a bit quicker than that last time, if Sebastian used another set of tires," Rosberg said. Grosjeans third place matched his best qualifying performance of the season, made all the more impressive by the fact that his more accomplished teammate Kimi Raikkonen was a lowly 13th. With Raikkonen moving on to Ferrari next season, Grosjean is auditioning for a team leader role, but is also aware he is not guaranteed a seat with Lotus next year. "I dont really care (about beating Raikkonen)," Grosjean said. "My relationship with Kimi has always been not very speaky. I am just focused on what I have to do and we will see." Ferrari pair Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso qualified in sixth and seventh place respectively, with McLarens Jenson Button eighth, Toro Rossos Daniel Ricciardo ninth and Saubers Esteban Gutierrez a career-best 10th, bettering his previous high of 14th. Vettel, who is on track for a fourth straight world championship, is aiming for his third straight victory at Marina Bay, where pole sitters have a marked advantage on the tight and twisty race circuit. "Its tricky to pass on this track but because its such a long race, there are plenty of opportunities for all of us, and usually we get a safecty car this race," Vettel said. .com) - The struggling Florida Panthers slow start to the season cost head coach Kevin Dineen his job. The five-time Olympian and Canadas captain was among six players head coach Dan Church left off his 21-player roster for the annual international womens tournament starting Tuesday in Lake Placid, N.COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Cam Atkinson scored two goals and Sergei Bobrovsky continued his hot streak to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets past the Washington Capitals 5-1 on Friday night for their fifth straight victory. The Capitals, who got a goal from John Carlson, have lost four in a row and 11 of 15. Ryan Johansen added a goal and assist, James Wisniewski had a goal, Mark Letestu scored for the fifth time in six games and Jack Johnson had two assists for the Blue Jackets, who had lost their past five meetings with Washington. The victory moved the Blue Jackets to two points out of playoff position with at least one game in hand on every team ahead of them in the Metropolitan Division and wild-card playoff races. Bobrovsky, who came in 5-0-0 with a 1.45 goals-against average and a .954 save percentage in his past five starts, had 26 saves. He stood tall to frustrate the Capitals when the game was still up for grabs. The Capitals came in tied with Pittsburgh for the best power-play unit in the league. But it was the Blue Jackets who scored twice with a man advantage. At 12:08 of the first, Wisniewski one-timed a hard drive from the point that climbed over Philipp Grubauers glove. It was Wisniewskis first power-play goal and fourth tally of the season. In the final minute of the opening period, the Blue Jackets crowded the nets and benefited. Matt Calvert got two whacks at the puck from the crease, Grubauer deflecting each. Defenceman Dmitry Orlov then whiffed on an attempt to clear the puck, with Atkinson hopping on it to lift the puck into the net over a diving Grubauer for his 14th of the season. The Blue Jackets stretched it to 3-0 at 1:44 of the second. R.J. UUmberger carried the puck through the neutral zone and then pulled up in the right corner, sending a pass to the high slot for Johansen.dddddddddddd He slid laterally, waiting for an opening, before wristing a shot for his team-high 18th of the season. Grubauer was pulled after allowing three goals on 14 shots, replaced by Braden Holtby. The Capitals got on the board at 8:53 on what appeared to be an innocent shot. Carlsons shot from near the blue line that took a while to get to the net, but it still beat Bobrovsky. It was the defencemans eighth goal of the season. The Blue Jackets killed off two Washington power plays late in the second period, including 18 seconds when the Capitals had a 5 on 3 advantage. Bobrovsky was at his best during this stretch. He twice stymied Russian Olympic teammate Alexander Ovechkin, the NHLs leading scorer with 34 goals, on power-play shots -- once on a one-timer from the left dot and a second time when the Columbus defence broke down and the three-time goal-scoring champ was all alone on a shot that Bobrovsky deflected wide off his catcher. Columbus then added two goals in the third. Letestu wired a wrister inside the near post past Holtby on the power play. Then Atkinson used his skate to settle a hard pass from close range, spun and whipped a quick shot into the net from the high slot -- 3 seconds after the end of an Ovechkin penalty.
