WOODBRIDGE, N.J. -- Pitcher Carl Pavano is retiring after 14 major league seasons. The 38-year-old right-hander didnt pitch after June 1 in 2012 because of a strained right shoulder. His spleen was removed in January 2013 after he was injured when he fell in the snow at his home in Vermont. Pavano had been hoping to return to the major leagues this year. "Despite my strong desire to compete and hard work in preparing for the upcoming season, I feel that the amount of time lost from my spleen injury, coupled with the recovery from my complications from that injury, preclude me from continuing to compete at my highest level, which is necessary to perform in the major leagues," Pavano said in a statement released Wednesday by his agent, David Pepe. "I have achieved many things as a major league pitcher of which I am very proud. However, I feel at this time, I am simply not able to continue to pitch at the major league level, and these last three months of rigorous training have failed to produce the results that I was looking for to allow me to continue my major league career." Pavano, an All-Star in 2004, was 108-107 with a 4.39 ERA for Montreal (1998-02), Florida 2002-04), the New York Yankees (2005, 2007-08), Cleveland (2009) and Minnesota (2009-12). He was an All-Star in 2004, going 18-8 with a 3.00 ERA and earning a $39.95 million, four-year contract with the Yankees. Injuries limited Pavano to 26 starts, 145 2-3 innings and a 9-8 record during his Yankees contract. He rebounded after leaving New York and went 17-11 for the Twins in 2010, when he tied for the AL lead in complete games with seven. "It has been an honour and a privilege to have been a major league baseball player, and the gratitude I have for being able to do that is profound and beyond any expression I can make in words," he said. . Tests earlier this week revealed a Grade 2 left hamstring strain for Sabathia, who was hurt in last Fridays start against San Francisco. Its an injury that will require about eight weeks to heal. He finished a disappointing campaign just 14-13 with a career-worst 4. [url=http://www.wholesalejerseysauthentic.us.com/chiefs-91-tamba-hali-red-stitch... #91 Tamba Hali Red Stitched NFL Jersey . Peter Holland and Brad Staubitz were sent to Toronto on Saturday as the Maple Leafs traded defenceman Jesse Blacker and draft picks to the Anaheim Ducks. . Here are his mid-season NBA awards. MVP: (KEVIN DURANT-Thunder) - Has been sensational this season and more importantly, the most consistent player in the league. Considering that his team has been without star guard Russell Westbrook and with the free agent departure of sharpshooter Kevin Martin, hes had to carry the majority of the load to not only keep his team afloat but more importantly, at an elite level. Lucic scored on a power play at 15:46 of the third period, when he tipped a shot over Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen for a 3-1 lead.CARDIFF -- The Springboks handed tighthead prop Frans Malherbe a test debut and recalled veteran backs Jaque Fourie and JP Pietersen for the tour opener against Six Nations champion Wales at Millennium Stadium on Saturday. The 22-year-old Malherbe, from Western Province, replaced Jannie du Plessis, who didnt make the tour because of a chronic shoulder injury and broken hand. Another uncapped player, Sharks lock Pieter-Steph du Toit, was in the reserves. He would have played earlier this season if he hadnt injured his sternum, coach Heyneke Meyer said on Wednesday. There are five changes from the starters who lost an epic match to the All Blacks at Ellis Park on Oct. 5. The centre Fourie last appeared for South Africa at the 2011 World Cup, while Pietersen hasnt been available all year until now. The only other change in the forwards has Flip van der Merwe locking with Eben Etzebeth. "Frans has big boots to fill, but hes been with us for most of 2012 and shown good form since recovering from injury recently, and we dont have any doubts that he has what it takes to make the step uup," Meyer said.dddddddddddd "Hell have two players with more than 50 test caps each next to him in the scrum (Bismarck du Plessis and Tendai Mtawarira), and his general workrate across the field and on defence is very good. Im very happy for Frans." The inclusion of Fourie and Pietersen means all but fullback Pat Lambie, in for Zane Kirchner, in the backline have at least 40 caps. "Were very fortunate to have two world-class players in JP and Jaque and I wanted to get then into the action as soon as possible," Meyer said. "It was clear from our training sessions thus far that they are in great form and ready for test rugby." ------ South Africa: Pat Lambie, JP Pietersen, Jaque Fourie, Jean de Villiers (captain), Bryan Habana, Morne Steyn, Fourie du Preez; Duane Vermeulen, Willem Alberts, Francois Louw, Flip van der Merwe, Eben Etzebeth, Frans Malberhe, Bismarck du Plessis, Tendai Mtawarira.
