SAN DIEGO -- Wimbledon champion Andy Murray will lead the British squad taking on John Isner and the United States in a first-round Davis Cup match being played on a temporary clay court set up in left field at the San Diego Padres baseball stadium. Murray was selected to the British team by captain Leon Smith on Tuesday, along with Kyle Edmund, James Ward and doubles specialist Colin Fleming. Murray may be asked to play both singles and doubles for Britain. Isner was named to the U.S. team, despite retiring from his first-round match at the Australian Open because of an injured right ankle. Joining him on the American roster announced Monday by U.S. captain Jim Courier are Sam Querrey and the doubles team of twins Bob and Mike Bryan. The Davis Cup first-round matches are set for Jan. 31-Feb. 2. Britain and the U.S. played the first Davis Cup match in 1900. They have met 18 times, with the Americans holding an 11-7 advantage. . I cant say I was surprised because Bernie Ecclestone does a lot of foolish things. The thing he unfortunately doesnt recognize is there is an 800-pound gorilla when it comes to major American motorsports. The 800-pound gorilla is NASCAR." Texas Motor Speedway will host NASCARs Texas 500 on Nov. 2, the same day F1 will hold its only race in the U.S. this year. Fort Worth is about a 3-hour drive from Austin. While Gossage thought a stronger stance by the management at Circuit of the Americas would have prevented the scheduling issue, Ecclestone believed it was a non-issue.
