The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Wednesday that veteran defenceman Joni Pitkanen will miss the entirety of the 2013-14 NHL season with a major heel injury. The 29-year-old Finn suffered a broken left calcaneus bone on April 2nd against the Capitals and missed the Hurricanes final 13 games of the season. Pitkanen, the former Flyer and Oiler, is entering his sixth season with the Hurricanes, having come over in a trade with Edmonton for Erik Cole.
